22 Years Ago Today

Larry Legend retired from the Boston Celtics.


Here are some highlights:


1. "Larry, you only told me one lie. You said there will be another Larry Bird. Larry, there will never, ever be another Larry Bird." -- Magic Johnson at Bird's retirement party on Feb. 4, 1993

2. "Larry Bird just throws the ball in the air and God moves the basket underneath it." -- Cleveland Cavaliers public address announcer Howie Chizek during one of Bird's three consecutive MVP seasons

3. "He said, 'I'm going to get it right here and I'm going to shoot it right in your face.' And he came out right about that exact spot, and shot a shot right in my face. And he was like, 'I didn't mean to leave two seconds on the clock.' He wanted to shoot it at zero seconds on the clock. I walked back to the sideline like, damn." -- Xavier McDaniel while describing one of Bird's game-winning jumpers

I'd give anything for his haircut.  For that matter, ANY haircut.

Hard to believe it was 22 years ago.

Magic showed up in his Laker warmup. He then took it off and revealed he was wearing a Celtic t-shirt underneath. The crowd went crazy.

What I best remember him saying was, "There are players I respect but Larry Bird is the only player I feared because if there was a way to beat you he'd find it."

It was twenty years ago today

Thanks for the footage. LB wanted to continue having a role with the Celtics. Gavitt and Red expressed their desire for a continuing role for Bird.

So, what happened?

BTW, Larry's shirt is just about the ugliest thing I've ever seen.

That was one thing I always loved about Bird: he wore clothes that looked like the stuff your mom bought you.
