BOSTON – The lone new Boston Celtics assistant coach, Darren Erman, has wasted no time making a positive impression on Brad Stevens.
“He’s really studied the game,” Stevens said Friday night prior to a scrimmage at the TD Garden. “And I think that adds just another good, young ambitious guy that’s really excited to help these guys get better. And he spends a lot of time, as do all of our assistants, with the individuals. That’s as big of a key right now as anything else.”
A former lawyer, Erman opened his coaching career as a student assistant at Emory University and has also worked under Hall of Fame high school coach Bob Hurley. He later spent time at Brandeis University, became a coaching assistant under Doc Rivers for the Celtics, and left for the Golden State Warriors and a spot on Mark Jackson’s staff. The end of Erman’s tenure in Golden State was both messy and bizarre, but everybody seems to agree he possesses a bright basketball mind.
“Darren’s really a great defensive coach,” Stevens said. “He’s more than that. I think sometimes we pigeon-hole guys because he’s obviously specialized in that. But he is detail-oriented as detail-oriented gets. If your hands aren’t in the right place as you’re guarding in a pick-and-roll, or if your body positioning’s not at the right angle, or you don’t guard the post in the exact right way, he’ll stop it and he’ll correct it.”
When Ron Adams left for the Warriors this summer, Jay Larranaga was promoted to the top assistant. Erman, initially hired in a scouting role, was shifted to the bench. The rest of the assistants – Jamie Young, Micah Shrewsberry and Walter McCarty – all remain the same as last season.
“The consistency of the staff and the continuity of the staff has been great," Stevens said. "Adding Darren, obviously, but having everybody back other than Ron (Adams) has been really good, and we’ve been able to kind of get a head start on things.”

MY NOTE: Erman was a coach with the Celtics (I think he did the video, but don't quote me on that), then was hired by Mark Jackson in GSW and was fired for secretly taping conversations between coaches and players. Danny hired him back. As a "detail guy" himself, no wonder Stevens is liking Erman. His statement about him being "as detail oriented as detail oriented gets" is about as high a compliment as Stevens can give.

Isn't he the coach who could be heard all over the place during yesterday's scrimmage. He'd better save some of that voice in case he becomes a head coach some day.

When I first read this post, I thought Sam was talking to us from the other side...then I noticed the 2014 date. Sure miss Dick. What a great guy.

The Cs assistant coaches have to be better than just 'good' to help Stevens elevate the team so quickly since Stevens arrival.
It is always nice to hear a head coach praising his assistants because these guys rarely get any recognition.
I would bet the even with McCarty in their group that they could walk around Boston and not be recognized very often, but the team would not be where they are without them.

I truly think they enjoy the way the team is progressing. Each one has a certain job (or more), and they are thriving off being around Stevens as his even temper makes it an enjoyable place to work.
Worcester, I had to go back and read this post over twice before I realized the date myself.. You are right, we really miss Sam so much.
But, he left this forum in great hands and we have all been able to stay together with their leadership. I miss him greatly.
