Celts will send Austin Rivers to Clippers, but have to wait to clear roster space for two expiring contracts.
2:37 AM - 14 Jan 2015
From what we've heard today on the trade front, Danny is working on a buyout for Tayshaun Prince and now the newly acquired Nate Robinson. With Prince, Robinson, and Rivers still in the fold as of tonight, the Celtics' roster stands at 15 and Bulpett reports that the Celtics will be getting back two expiring contracts. To match Rivers $2.4M cap number, we're probably looking at some combination of Glen Davis, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Hedo Turkoglu, and Ekpe Udoh. Based on playing time under Doc, Udoh and CDR are the likely candidates to be Boston-bound with a second round pick. And for what it's worth, Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders reported earlier today that LAC is considering waiving rookie Reggie Bullock, the 2nd year pro out of North Carolina and former 25th pick in the draft. If you're Ainge and Stevens, would you rather take on the expiring deals or trade for the sophomore who has another inexpensive year on his contract?

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
Bullock and Udoh are the guys I'd want back.
Bullock has a $1.25M salary next year.
Udoh is on a one year minimum deal at less than $1M.
neither player would affect the cap clearing for next year much and Stevens can get a free look see at both.
I like it.

Kdp,
Udoh was a # 6 pick by GSW. He's a jumping jack. As I remember him he isn't a high BBIQ guy. His production/36 minutes is way down this year, which is why Doc is willing to give him up. 27 years old and 3 teams. GSW drafted a couple of them, Brandon Wright being another.

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
I am not sure if any of those guys at the bottom of the Clippers roster is someone that is going to change the 2014-15 season any more than Doc's son would. None of them are center type guys so none are likely to get into the C's rotation this year if the development of James Young is at all a goal.
If any of these guys are added, perhaps Stevens will not try to find them rotation spots because at almost the half way point it is time to tighten up on the rotation for the second half of the season.

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
Udoh is a 6-10, 240#er
so he's smallish center size (bigger than Wright).
but he is a marginal NBA player for sure.
I agree that niether one (or anyone else that comes back) will get much (any) playing time, unless they earn it of course.
what i meant by a look see , is that Stevens and AInge can see how they do in practice and such to see if there any need to keep them around ( Bullock would still have one year left).
I didn't mean that either one would be any type of game changer.

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
kdp,
I understand that you were certainly not touting any of those guys as "saviors" by any stretch.
Not directed only at you, but I have always thought that with only 400-500 guys getting to play in the NBA every year that most personnel guys would already "know" quite a bit about all of these guys. There has to be a networking that happens between Ainge and his counterparts.
With that said, if the Cs are taking guys back in a trade at this time, getting guys who might be able to help up front would be preferable to bringing in more guard type players.
Ainge has already indicated by trading Rivers, looking to trade Robinson and buying out Prince before any of them have even set foot on the Celtics practice floor since obtaining them that he also does not seem to want to mess with anything that is going to help develop Smart or Young at this time.

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
Odds are high that the new guys are just placeholders and practice fodder. If a new arrival in all the wheeling and dealing works out and sticks for the longer term, great, but all those draft picks are going to turn into players, either through the draft or trades.

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
Danny must be earning a good deal of respect in the NBA for how he's helped his former players land in good spots - Rajon, Paul, Kevin - and how he's helping out with Austin and Nate. It's also good news that he cleared Jameer's contract, increasing our cap space.
Has anyone thought how disgusted Kevin Love must be in Cleveland. Any chance he may become our FA pickup? Does that make sense for this team - IFF we can also acquire a center?

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
W,
I just read this article. Have a look:
Kevin Love's bad defense keeps costing the Cavaliers
It didn't take long for the Phoenix Suns to find their hot hand in a 107-100 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. Markieff Morris got things going early by hitting an uncontested 18-foot jumper, then followed it up minutes later by barreling to the basket from the elbow for an easy layup.
Morris had a lot moves going Tuesday en route to scoring a career-high 35 points and put them all on display in an impressive performance. He's a rising player in this league. Yet he also had the benefit of being guarded by Kevin Love for the majority of the game.
Love's poor defensive work is nothing new, but it's back under the spotlight Wednesday after the All-Star was torched by Morris for 27 minutes. Love often looked overwhelmed trying to stop the athletic Suns forward, whether he was matched up in an isolation or trying to close out on the perimeter.
You could tell it was going to be that kind of night early on, when a backpedaling Love stumbled to the floor while trying to defend Morris' penetration on an isolation from the elbow:
About a minute later, the Suns went back to a similar play, with Morris setting up against Love near the right elbow. Cha-ching:
This set the tone for a night of dominant production by Morris, who finished the game shooting 15-of-21 from the field. Love should've had an increased sense of urgency in defending after Morris made those buckets early on, but you still regularly saw the Suns big man finding open space and hitting shots.
By the fourth quarter, head coach David Blatt had seen enough and put Love on the bench in favor of James Jones. This didn't stop Morris, who added another 12 points in the fourth quarter with Love sidelined. But again: Kevin Love got benched for an entire fourth quarter in favor of James Jones. This comes days after Blatt tried to get cute with semantics and suggested Love wasn't a max-contract player.
So that's where the Cavaliers and Love appear to be at this point. Being benched in the fourth quarter for defense used to be the territory of Carlos Boozer -- "OK, thanks Carlos, but it's time for our team to play defense now" -- yet this isn't the first time we've seen it with Love. Just how bad have things gotten?

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
Love sucks on D. That's why he needs to play alongside a superior defensive center who can cover up his deficiencies. He needs to play low post on offense and complement that with his outside threes. Now he's just taking threes, not getting offensive rebounds. He's wasted at Cleveland.
I still see someone who can average 25-10+ as a valuable addition - if he can play with a good center. Might he fit here? That depends on whom we can match up alongside him.

He is a valuable addition but I am not so sure he is good value for the money. Can you give the ball to him on offense and he creates on his own?

Re: Celtics will send Austin Rivers to Clippers
Neither Kevin Love nor Kyrie Irving play any semblance of defense. That will cost them. They will not beat Atlanta, Washington, Toronto, or Chicago in a 7-game series with that burden hanging over their heads.
The Cavs' fast track to success is starting to look like a potential crash and burn in the making.
