Andre Dawkins anyone?
A. Sherrod Blakely: League source says if the #Celtics sign Andre Dawkins to 10-day deal, will spend most or all of that time w/the #RedClaws of the D-league. Twitter @SherrodbCSN - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm#sthash.BffKAn8D.dpuf
from Draftnet:
34 - Andre Dawkins
Duke
Birthday: 9/19/91
NBA Position: Shooting Guard
Class: Senior
Ht: 6-5
Wt: 205
Hometown: Chesapeake, VA
High School: Atlantic Shores Christian
NBA Comparison: Fred Hoiberg
Strengths: A knockdown 3-point shooter with adequate size at about 6’5 206 … Not going to miss many open shots … Phenomenal shot when he has his feet set … One of those few shooters that can absolutely wow you just in warm ups, with his outside shooting ability ... Very fundamentally sound form, shows a compact and quick release, and can hit shots when contested … Clutch. Can make important shots … Generally stays within himself offensively and is valuable when dribble penetration forces the defense to help off him, leaving him space to shoot off kick outs … Strong … Pretty smart player and generally does things the textbook way … Decent defender … Not really a slasher, but when he does drive he usually is efficient and knows he has a way to the hoop …
Weaknesses: Is pretty nondescript outside of his shooting ability … Never lived up to his expectations after being a highly touted HS recruit … Not overly quick or athletic … Played on some Duke teams with a lot of depth and some teams where he should’ve been more of a factor for minutes, and never consistently garnered much playing time … Poor ball-handling skills, and is mostly only effective when he doesn’t dribble … Not very instinctive, and at times thinks too much on both ends of the court … Toughness? Can he have ANY effect on the game if his shot doesn’t fall at the next level? ... Provides little on the glass and as a passer ...
Overall: Suffered through the tragedy of his Sister dying in a car accident on the way to one of his games as a freshman at Duke ... Dawkins jump shot will be his calling card to the NBA. His Duke pedigree also should help open doors … He has enough size to be an NBA SG and he is a confident jump shooter who isn’t afraid of taking big shots … Still, outside of his jump shot he provides no value…Dawkins could hear his name called at the end of Round 2, but also may be a guy who will have to prove it in Summer League and preseason that he has what it takes to be an NBA player ... Probably made a mistake entering Duke a year early, as he never seemed to recapture the confidence he had in high school ... Has an chance at making a career as a 3-point specialist. And if not in NBA has a game that should be well suited for a lucrative career overseas …

I saw a reference to Andre Dawkins earlier over at CelticsBlog. It didn't list his height and the picture there made him look small. 6'5 is good height, but he needs to work on his handle and his D.

Re: Andre Dawkins anyone?
Never heard of this guy until this week. His numbers in the D league look good so he may be worth a look.
There are some guys who are "late bloomers", but if not drafted when he declared he may have too many holes in his game.
Not sure why the Cs would sign this guy to one of their 15 roster spots and then send him to Maine. The Red Claws winning a couple of games cannot be worth using a roster space in Boston, is it? If you want to look at him further than what you have already seen of him in the D league, I would think that you would need to see him in practices against NBA players and then even see him in games against other NBA teams.

Re: Andre Dawkins anyone?
just my thoughts, but guys like Dawkins can/would be added once Ainge is done making his roster moves.
I could see the kid here IF Thornton is moved for instance.

Report: Andre Dawkins Would Spend His Time With Celtics In D-League
by NESN Staff on Tue, Jan 20, 2015 at 4:47PM Share this: Fancred If Andre
Dawkins comes to the Celtics, then chances are he’ll be spending more time in Portland, Maine, than in Boston. CSNNE.com’s A. Sherrod Blakely reported Tuesday that if the Celtics do sign the 23-year-old shooting guard to a 10-day contract after they meet this week, he’ll likely be assigned to the D-League with the Maine Red Claws for all or most of that time.
While it might seem counterproductive for Boston to use its last roster spot on someone being sent to Maine, Dawkins would be guaranteed playing time there, giving the Celtics a chance to get a good look at him. As an undrafted free agent out of Duke, Dawkins’ NBA career was limited to just 22 minutes over four games with the Miami Heat before they waived him earlier this month.

Re: Andre Dawkins anyone?
Makes ZERO sense to sign this (any?) guy to an NBA roster spot to send him to the D League.
Just get some video tape from his earlier D League games this year i you want to see him against D league opponents.
I would save the roster space until at least after the trade deadline, but if you really want to see this guy for 10 days because there is some thought that he can help in the future, put him on the roster and watch him in practice and maybe in a game or two.

Clyde,
The Red Claws are wholly owned by the Celtics and run the exact same playbook. Playing Dawkins in Maine is like playing Young or Smart in Maine; he's running the same plays but he's getting reps he wouldn't be getting in Boston. An injury to Smart or Thornton (both of whom have suffered recurring injuries this year already ) and he's a bus ride away and is already knowledgeable and in game shape.

Re: Andre Dawkins anyone?
bob,
I understand that the Red Claws may be using the same plays, but their plays in practice and in games are still against D league players. Dawkins already has good stats in the D league. If the Cs really want to see if he is an potential NBA player, I think that they should see him against NBA players in the relatively short period of time (10 days) that they will have him under contract.
If he does not impress in 10 days, he is just not resigned. If he does impress and someone gets hurt as you mentioned, he is even closer than having to drive in from Portland or wherever the Red Claws might be playing.
I just do not see the value of filling the 15th roster spot for a guy to play in Maine. This roster spot could be more valuable if saved to add a player in some sort of transaction that may bring another draft pick coming to Boston.
The Cs roster, at this point, does not scream to add this guy as a two guard after just dumping out other guys who play the same position while already having NBA experience in buy-outs, waivers and trades.

If Boston has a transaction in the works and needs that 15th roster spot, they will just waive Dawkins and pay him for his 10 days. Not a big deal. They are not tying up a roster spot by signing him to a 10 day contract.
Even if Dawkins had good stats in the D-League, they want to see how he fits in their system.
He's not going to get the chance to do that sitting on the bench for the Celtics.
