Brad Stevens could sense the pity party forming all around him.
The Celtics coach sensed it in the locker room after his team was knocked out on its feet with an 18-4 run in the fourth quarter of a 119-103 loss to the Chicago Bulls 12 days ago.
He could sense it from the media that was trying to soft-pedal questions about the spirit of the squad following 11 losses in 14 games and the trade of its two most prominent veterans — leading scorer Jeff Green and four-time All-Star and team captain Rajon Rondo.
He could even sense it from the hearty and sympathetic crowds of nearly 17,000 that continued to show up each home game, root on the team, and console the coach and players after each mounting loss channeling the "Good Will Hunting" absolution by Robin Williams: "It’s not your fault."
Yet as the Celtics prepared to head out on a six-game Western Conference road trip that many figured would put the final nail in the coffin holding the 2014-15 season, Stevens would have none of it.
"We can’t spend our time managing feelings right now," Stevens said. "We have to spend our time getting better."
Then a funny thing happened on the way back to Lotteryville, USA — the Celtics did get better.
A road trip that included three Western Conference powers, two back-to-backs, and six games in 10 days has turned into the unlikely resurrection of the team’s playoff hopes after Monday night’s 99-90 victory at Utah.
A team that had lost 28 straight road games against Western Conference opponents has now won three of them in five days. The Celtics showed the resilience to beat the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets in the final possession on consecutive nights, and Monday night overcame an 18-0 run from the Jazz in the third quarter to rally back for the triumph.
The latest victory pulled the Celtics within one game in the loss column of the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference standings heading into Wednesday night’s game in Minnesota against the worst team in the NBA.
