Well, Marcus Thornton we hardly knew you, gone to Phoenix for Thomas. Included in trade was a 2016 first round pick from Cleveland

Love it!
great pick for a scorer who is under contract for three more years at under $7M
Rumors have it that Prince has been sent to Detroit for Jerbeko(sp) and the Italian guy Danny looked at last year.
we didn't get a big man, so
Sully, Bass, Kelly and Zeller will have to push thru in the next 30 games into the playoffs.
Turner and Crowder are set at SF
Bradley, Smart and Thomas are a GREAT young trio in the backcourt.
Young should move up to the 10th man now.
Wallace, Pressey, Randolph and the 2 detriot guys round out the bench I guess.

Re: trader dan
Rosalie, did we send the Cleveland pick or receive it? In either case we got a good deal. BTW, is Danny trying to set a Guinness Book of World Records record by having the shortest point guards in the NBA. If he signs Muggsy Bogues next, we'll know that was his plan.
Re: trader dan
Looks like Danny picked up the Swede and the Italian from Detroit because both of their contracts are expiring this year, freeing up cap space, although wasn't Tayshaun an expiring contract also?
Re: trader dan
Kind of seems a lot like making moves for the sake of making moves.

Prince's salary is $7,707,685
Jerebko's salary is $4,500,000
Datome's salary is $1,750,000
EDIT: We reduce our team salary by $1,457,865.

Re: trader dan
also Thomas makes less than Thornton this year also.
Celtics are right about at $62M this year by my count (which may be off some).
$41M on the books for 10 players now with Thomas added.
$1.1M or so for Crowders' tender
About $3M for two first round picks in the 14-25 range.
Danny CAN have as much as $20M in CAP space next year.
that's a max player at center AND still enough to give Crowder a couple Mill more.

Re: trader dan
Thomas is a proven NBA scorer at a reasonable salary who is under contract for 3 more years. He can help put up points in the present and potentially grow as a player along side Sully, Smart, Young and Kelly. If not, he is a guy who you can easily move next year or the year after as lots of teams are looking for instant offense 6th men. Very good deal by DA.
Jerebko was a solid prospect and had an achilles injury and took a bit of a step back, but still worth a look...particularly with Sully going down and potentially done for the season.
Both deals make sense to me.

Re: trader dan
I just read that the Celtics created a new $7.7M TPE with the Prince deal. The new TPE is good for one year.
Jerebko and Datome must have been bought with a couple of the smaller TPE's in Danny's arsenal, each in a separate deal.
It looked like one deal with Detroit, but it had to be three separate deals (from our perspective) if one new TPE was created and two were used.

(4th paragraph)
The Boston Celtics have also acquired forwards Jonas Jerebko and Luigi Datome from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for forward Tayshaun Prince. As part of this transaction, the Celtics created a $7.7 million trade exception.

KJ.
He likes Thomas, that was established when Thomas was the first player he called when the free agent moratorium was lifted last summer. Whether he is justified in that interest or not will be seen over the coming days/weeks/months but I don't know how you can claim getting a player you like for a player who was going to be gone next year is "making moves just for the sake of making moves".
As far as the Prince trade goes, he gives up a partial-year 34 year old rental for, at the minimum even if the two incoming players are gone after this, a >$7M TPE. A player well into his back 9, who was either going to be bought out next week or gone in a few months, for a $7M TPE.

http://espn.go.com/boston/nba/story/_/id/12348825/boston-celtics-get-isaiah-thomas-phoenix-suns-marcus-thornton-first-round-pick
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Boston Celtics thrust themselves into the frenetic final minutes of the 2015 NBA trade deadline, acquiring point guard Isaiah Thomas from the Phoenix Suns and dealing Tayshaun Prince to the Detroit Pistons, the Pistons announced Thursday.
Boston acquired Thomas in exchange for Marcus Thornton and the Cleveland Cavaliers' 2016 first-round draft pick.
Boston sent Prince to the Detroit team he spent most of his career with in exchange for Jonas Jerebko and Luigi Datome.
The players dealt were among 39 to change hands Thursday, a day that marked the busiest NBA trade deadline day in 25 years.
Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge had said Thursday morning that Boston was "all over the map" while examining possibilities as a buyer, seller or facilitator. For much of the early afternoon, it looked as if Boston might endure its third tradeless deadline in four years, but the Celtics finished with a bang.
"Isaiah is a dynamic offensive player whose scoring and playmaking abilities add to an already well-rounded backcourt with Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley," Ainge said in a statement. "We are excited to welcome Isaiah to the Celtics family."
Ainge had made Thomas a free-agent target this past summer before he landed with the Suns. With an overstocked backcourt and a disgruntled Goran Dragic, Phoenix overhauled its backcourt Thursday. The Suns traded Dragic to the Miami Heat and shipped Thomas to the Celtics as Boston pounced on a player it coveted.
Thomas signed a modest four-year, $27 million contract this past summer that decreases in value each season. In the hours leading up to the deadline, Ainge had noted, "We're also looking to acquire players that are already under contract. We really don't want to get rid of multiple draft picks for players with uncertainty in the free-agent market -- a situation like we were in with [Rajon] Rondo. ... We're looking for more certainty."
Now the Celtics add a pint-sized point guard who immediately becomes their best penetrator. Thomas can create off the dribble and provide a scoring punch, mixing into what will be a three-guard rotation with Smart and Bradley.

The Celtics obtained point guard Isaiah Thomas in a trade with the Suns on Thursday.
It's just the sort of infusion of talent that Ainge had hinted he wanted.
Boston sits 1½ games out of a final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics just got hypercompetitive with two other teams in the mix also upgrading their point guard position -- the Heat, who obtained Dragic, and the Detroit Pistons, who picked up Reggie Jackson from the Oklahoma City Thunder.
After its acquisition of Thomas, Boston's 2013 blockbuster with the Brooklyn Nets looks even better. The Celtics essentially turned the $12.9 million trade exception generated from trading Paul Pierce into Tyler Zeller and Thomas. Boston drafted James Young with Brooklyn's pick this past summer and will collect two more first-rounders in 2016 and 2018 (with an ability to swap spots in 2017).
The Nets traded Garnett to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday, leaving Brooklyn with no remaining players from the Boston swap.
The Celtics were able to move Prince, a player who was headed for a buyout discussion if he was not moved. Thornton could have been a buyout candidate as well if Boston didn't find a home for him.
Boston's roster now stands at 15 players, although it's unclear whether Jerebko and Datome figure into the plans moving forward. The Celtics are still comfortably under the luxury-tax line.

Bravo Danny but I am wondering how much crack the Suns GM has been smoking. They traded a known, young, cheap entity for a worse, older entity + a low chance lottery ticket.

swede,
When Danny got KG from McHale people said it was just McHale doing his old friend and teammate a favor. Well, it looks like Danny's old director of international scouting, who worked for Danny for 10 years, did it too. Who says personal relationships don't matter in business?
What I don't understand about this is not that he traded Thomas for Thornton, maybe he needs the bigger scorer more, but for him to trade Thomas AND Dragic? Now THAT surprises me...

Me too. Who will be their PG now, Coles? Who to back up?
Anyways, IT'S NOT OUR PROBLEM. Danny sure has done a lot with those draft picks already - plus he's become a master working those TPE's

The KG trade was obviously a good trade for the Celtics but Minnesota got 2 picks, Al Jefferson + scraps and I think KGs contract was running out too. It could be argued it was a steal by the Celtics but one can see some value for Minnesota in it, especially if KG was hinting on wanting out..
This Suns trade is pretty much borderline retarded though short of Thomas having unknown issues. But I am happy to do as we say in Swedish "tacka och ta emot" (say thanks and receive), their problem.
