a few NBA changes schedules wise.
after listening to the Commish talk about the schedule a bit last night, some changes I would like to see.
1) no back to backs. The NBA season this year is from Oct 29- April 15.
or 179 days ( minus 8 days for all-star break) for an 82 game schedule.
move back the starting date to the last week of Oct (adding 4 days)
have a max of 6 days off for the all-star break.
you now have 177 SCHEDULING days for an 82 game schedule.
The Commish is right that its time for the NBA to be the FIRST choice in arena scheduling now.
2) Make the trade deadline at the START of the now 6 day All-star break. Moving the all- star break back a few days if need be. This year for instance, the trade deadline would still be Feb 19, with the all -star break being Feb 19- 24.
My reason for this is allowing better integration of traded players with their new teams, with the extending time off.

Unfortunately ARENAS have the say to scheduling rights. Commish has no say really, hot air is all this point is.
As for no back to backs? that's a joke.

Re: a few NBA changes schedules wise.
Part of the trading process is the player physicals. That process takes 2-3 days, maybe more, due to travel in the worst cases. If a player that is participating in the All-star is traded, the physicals would take away from some of the earlier festivities. This process won't be taking place during the break.
Because the All-star game has branched out so much beyond just the game, the number of days were expanded so that the participants could have some time off after the event. The number of days for the All-star break will not be decreased.
Starting the season month earlier may work, but that goes up against the baseball playoffs. Basketball fans may not go to games or watch them on the TV during this time.
Maybe they could block out some time where East only plays West in the west, then block out a time where they play in the east. Like MLB, where time is blocked out where NL teams plays at AL teams (and visa-versa). There is only one game at home and one game away for each team. Travel time would be minimized and this would be more efficient.
But like Beat say, the arenas have a lot of say in the matter. San Antonio has no home games for much of the end of February (this year, Feb 12 - Mar 1) due to the scheduling of Rodeo Days. That is not going to change. There may be similar events in other arenas that have to be worked around.
It is a tough nut to crack. Believe it or not, there are less BTB games now than in the past. Back in the day, there even were BTBTB games. Teams have a roster of 15 players and can have 13 players active for each game. They just have to shuffle the roster and rest certain players to get through the schedule.

The game really drags in the last 2 minutes. Limit each team to one 30 second time out in the last 2 minutes.

Perhaps the entire schedule needs to be looked at a bit.
Does EVERY team need to PLAY in EVERY city EVERY year? I realize it is a little apples to oranges comparing an 82 game schedule with the NFL's 16 but the following season schedule is based on the previous years result to a degree, perhaps if west teams were rotated with east teams home and home every other year, and teams played a few more games within there division/conference they they could cut travel by actually playing the same team 2 games BTB in the same city. Schedules would not all be the same but heck they are not now.
If anything the season should be shortened but the owners would never hear of that $$$$ and the commish is looking out for them NOT the players. The year there was a strike and 66 games were played in a compressed season. That actually was fun, games meant more.
lastly the game itself like the college game...there are too many time outs. Going into the final 2 minutes, teams should only get 2 time outs, if they have more than that left , too bad they are gone. Just my opinion on a couple things
