Isaiah Thomas Comes In 2nd for 6th Man
Lou Williams of Toronto won. He averaged 15.5ppg. IT averaged 19.0ppg for us and 15.2ppg for Phoenix. Williams averaged 2.1apg and IT averaged 5.4apg. Williams averaged 40% from the field and 34% from 3 and IT averaged 41% and 35% from 3 for us and 43% and 39% from 3 for Phoenix. And Williams won.
On Saturday Williams scored 10 points on 4-16 shooting as the #4 Toronto Raptors lost at home to the #5 Washington Wizards. Thomas scored 22 and had 10 assists, on the road.
This is from the NBA’s press release:
The Toronto Raptors’ Lou Williams, who averaged a career-high 15.5 points this season and helped Toronto win a franchise-record 49 games, is the winner of the 2014-15 Kia NBA Sixth Man Award as the league’s best player in a reserve role, the NBA announced today. The 6-1 guard becomes the first Raptors player to earn the honor.
Williams, in his 10th NBA season and first with the Raptors, amassed 78 first-place votes and 502 total points from a panel of 130 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics finished second with 324 points (33 first-place votes), and two-time winner Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers was third with 131 points (eight first-place votes).
For the record:
Bill Simmons voted for Williams and had Isaiah Thomas second.
Celtics radio color analyst Cedric Maxwell’s ballot: 1: Jamal Crawford 2: Lou Williams 3: Aaron Brooks
Tommy Heinsohn, of course, voted for Isaiah Thomas

Bobh,
Don't be upset. I'd trade 6th Man Award for beating Lebron team in playoffs anytime.
Not sure, though, if the league'd allow the trade....

Re: Isaiah Thomas Comes In 2nd for 6th Man
Bob,
I understand your argument, but I think the 6th man award in particular is about the impact the player provides. The impact Thomas has provided in Boston is more significant than any other 6th man candidate, but he played only 21 games for the Celtics. In Phoenix, he wasn't nearly as impactful, and the three-guard situation in Phoenix with Bledsoe, Dragic, and Thomas was considered a bust. A couple of quotes from an article on a Suns site:
The acquisition of Isaiah Thomas this past summer made Dragic feel unwanted and all but pushed him out the door.
Despite having already traded Dragic away, McDonough felt the need to move Thomas as well, given that he was never a great fit.

So while Thomas was great in Boston, the road was rockier in Phoenix. It's also significant that Williams played 80 games and Thomas played only 67.
On balance, over the entire season, I can see Williams as being more deserving.

I'm happy that, regardless of awards, the Celtics have Isaiah Thomas.

I also very much like Thomas on the Celtics, and really don't care much for any of these awards.
Such awards should definitely not be handed out during the playoffs just like baseball waits for the end of the World Series.
