Ron Adams: Celtics’ 2013-14 Roster Had ‘Difficult Personalities To Coach’
Brad Stevens has received a lot of praise for the coaching job he’s done with the Boston Celtics since taking over the team before the 2013-14 NBA season.
Helping guide the Celtics to a playoff berth this season — something many people didn’t believe was possible, given the team’s ongoing rebuild — was an impressive accomplishment for Stevens. That said, leading the team through a difficult 2013-14 campaign — his first with the C’s — might have been nearly as impressive.
Ron Adams, a former Stevens assistant now with the Golden State Warriors, recently told Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe how difficult it was to coach the Celtics’ roster in 2013-14.
“I was not surprised (at the playoff berth) in this sense: Brad is a really good coach that’s highly organized, and we had a lot of loose ends going into that first season,” Adams said. “We had a brand-new coach from the college game, which is tough. But we lacked a homogenous roster. We were a transient roster with some difficult personalities I think to coach. We survived the first year. The group became more homogenous with the moves they made during the season.”
We already knew Stevens, who finished fourth in NBA coach of the year voting, is a very good coach capable of handling egos of professional players. Adams’ comments are just more proof.

I'd say number one would be Rajon Rondo.
Number two would be Rajon Rondo.
And, at number three, I'd have to vote for Rajon Rondo.
Sully might be fourth.

I am sure that weeding out these 'non-coachable' guys did much to help this year's team improve from 25 wins to 40 wins. There is a lot to be said sometimes by the old theory of "addition by subtraction" on athletic teams.
I was only watching on TV and I was sick of Rondo quite a bit of time before Ainge finally did trade him.

Bogans was such a PITA that they had to eat his contract. Rondo, Sully was fat and not listening, Bayless wanted more PT so did Brooks, G Wallace was a pain until he settled into his role as team leader and veteran player coach of sorts.
But honestly, what team in the NBA does not have a few challenging personalities?
