Note to NYCelt, Rosalie, and others who have wondered about my condition
Thanks again for your support. Today I was in the hospital for seven hours, prepared for surgery, and was told that the previous patient's procedure took so long that they couldn't take me today. In fact, not until next week for complicated reasons due to the fact that I'm part of a national study program on aortic valve replacements among intermediate risk patients. Stay tuned.

sam,
Glad to hear things are moving along, even if slower than expected.
It would be nice to know what the expected rehab time is. How long will you be out of touch, so we don't have to wonder why your posts are absent for a while?

"Others" would include me, so thank you for the update, Sam.
Although not nearly as significant, When you've prepared yourself for having surgery -- physically, logistically, and most of all, mentally -- and then it doesn't happen, it's frustrating, at least in my experience.
Perhaps you don't want to make a fuss, but a quick note to say before surgery next week would be appreciated so that I can send positive energy in your direction. It makes me feel better, at least.
Here's hoping that you're the first patient on the schedule next time.

Sam, wishing you no more delays and a speedy recovery. Hoping you are ready for training camp because you will be needed yet once again to fill the gap.

Better to be on the bench in Boston than on the operating table in Portland.

Re: Note to NYCelt, Rosalie, and others who have wondered about my condition
Thanks all. I'll post a not when I'm once again scheduled. I'm quite certain I'll be #1 for that day because they were falling all over themselves with apologies. I thought, for a while, they would keep me overnight and "do" me at 7:30 this morning. But that fell through because a representative of this special national program I'm part of has to observe, and no one was available today. And my surgeon won't be available for several days.
gyso, the likelihood is that I'll be posting the night of the surgery and out of the hospital three days later. My best guess (hope) is Tuesday, Aug. 11, for the surgery. Our big question now is whether we'll still get to Paris, as our outgoing flight leaves 15 days after my most optimistic release date from the hospital (Aug. 14).
Tomorrow, I'll be on the phone with the American Hospital in Paris to arrange for backup cardiology availability in case I should need to be checked or have an urgent need. I've been a patient there previously. France is WAAAAAAY ahead of the U.S. in this type of procedure (as in most relatively new medical developments).
We know the city so well, including how to make things easy on ourselves; and both of us have recovered from operations (heart in my case and knee replacement in hers) in Paris. And we'll have our own apartment with an elevator. So, once we get there, we could arguably be in better shape than living 110 miles from Mass. General Hospital in the U.S.
Again, thanks to all, and I guess you'll have to put up with me for the next few days.
Go Danny!

What a let down, you get yourself geared up for the surgery only to have it put off. I am. Sure all will be well once you get the surgery. They are great doctors there. I ran into a heart issue during this hospital stay, emailed my cardiologist who ended up being on vacation. The next morning at 7:00 am I had an answer to my email with the answer I requested.
You are a trouper Sam, I give you credit for your ability to roll with the punches.
I will be at mass general on Friday to have a transoghogil Echo to make sure the infection is not hiding anywhere near my valve.
You know you are in my thoughts. Keep the faith!
Love
Rosalie

And you'll be in my thoughts too, Rosalie. You'll be arriving on the day I was supposed to be discharged. What a funny world. Now we have three days with absolutely nothing planned. I had thought about posting a filibuster on the board; but, I figure I'm luck if they read my short stuff.
Fortunately, my policy when things go wrong is immediately to start scheming in order to right them. Right now, most of my schemes involve how to get to Paris within two weeks of my release from the hospital. One thing that helps is treating doctors' orders as suggestions.

Hey Mulcogi, great to hear from you. I hope things are going very well for you. How about sending me a Private Message and giving me an update?
Best,
Sam

Sam,
Nancy was just asking me if I had heard how you were doing.
I know at this point you want to get your procedure done because you've got so many things coming up to enjoy. Modern medicine, it seems, can fix just about anything except red tape and administrative snags. Perhaps the prospect of some recovery time in Paris is a good thing to focus on to help offset the delay.
Keep us posted.
Regards

Sam first off, I thought i'd toss this out, even if you know the city well, i'd highly recommend a certain book, a good friend of mine and his wife happened to write it and I have a autographed copy- while it doesn't really have to do with the medical side of Paris, it does offer plenty of insights that a tourist would find very helpful in getting around Paris. I often look at my copy even though I'm decades away from visiting the city- i can pm ya for details on the book, "Paris Demystified" if ya like.
secondly, i think its a general feeling around here that we want to have to put up with you for many more decades..

Matty,
Glad you enjoy the book. One of our missions on this trip is to update it because it's now about five years since we published it. At my age, I've stopped measuring time in decades. I now measure it in championships. I'll settle for 10-15 more championships. And many thanks for the Private Message.
Take care,
Sam

Thanks, 112288. All the best to you, Karen and the girls. By the way, are both girls still in the same jobs? Those are pretty cool jobs!

Answer, Yes.
We will be on Cape Cod next week and then onto Martha's Vineyard. Sorry to be missing seeing you and Sally but we plan to be in Boston for 4 days come September, so hope to see both of you then.
