here's my quick game review i wrote in the other thread, just in case you missed it. Highlights don't show how often and how aggressively KO was taking the ball up the court after getting a defensive rebound, even firing away from 3 after crossing half court

Quick game review

KO basically played hero ball, and it was awesome. He was dribbling the ball up the court almost every time he got a rebound, always pushing the pace full speed. He even fired away a 3 pointer after dribbling the ball up. He missed it, but that's something most of us want him to do more often, even though it doesn't always seem like a good shot.

One time he went coast to coast, in a situation where he normally would have just pulled back because so many defenders were back on defense. Instead he just went right at them all, and scored it. That's another kind of doesn't-always-seem-like-a-good-shot that we'd like to see more from KO. His dribbling in general has been a lot more aggressive than we've seen. He has a quick first step, and when he's playing confidently he's a real weapon off the dribble. Of course the downside to KO's hero ball and super-aggressive ball handling was that he had like 5 turnovers.

All in all, a great experience for KO, even though it ended on a bitter note with the loss of an Olympic seed.

Even the experience shooting FTs was great experience, getting those reps in. KO was outstanding from the FT line as a rookie, including making his first like 19 FTAs of his NBA career. Then for some reason his FT% plummeted to like 65% last year. I think KO went 8-9 from the line today and maybe 75ish% for the tournament.

KO would seem to be ahead of the curve for sure, as far as competing for a rotation role to start the season. He's already shaken out a lot of cobwebs.

He's very active.  JUMPING for rebounds.  I saw a nice coast-to-coaster for him too, just after the 2:00 mark.  I'll tell you, Phil Jackson would LOVE to have him in the triangle.  He can do everything Pau Gasol did for him.  I'd trade Kelly and a bunch more, for Porzingis.  Listening, Phil?

It's all about confidence.  If this tournament gives him confidence then he could pop some eyes this year.  


And by the way, according to the boxscore you provided, he scored 40 points on 11-13, 3-4 from 3.  Not 34 like the video says.  He also had 6 TOs, but it looked like A LOT of the offense went through him.  He touched the ball A LOT.  He also immediately turned and started dribbling up court after getting a rebound, playing up tempo, and that's how that coast-to-coaster happened.  He started running nobody stopped him so he just kept going and took it right to the front of the rim.  That will make Brad exceedingly happy.

One major caveat here, though, is that nobody on the Venezuela team is over 6'9".  It's not going to be this easy vs NBA centers, that's for sure.  On the bright side, though, we're seeing him dominate players here that are right-sized to be NBA 4s.  If Danny can get another center, like Cousins, and Kelly can finally shift to the position Danny originally drafted him to play, power forward, then this game might be more representative of what he is capable of.

I'd be positively sick with happiness if Kelly can score 40 points on that kind of efficiency and grab 13 rebounds in 36 minutes during the regular season.

Not that this video showed his full arsenal of skills, but you can probably see why I think he could become an offensively dominant nba player.

While these Venezuelan guys may have been PF sized, I still think center is KO's best position. He won't be able to back them down as much as he does in the video, but he can take them off the dribble pretty much at will, unless Anthony Davis or Noel is playing center. And off the dribble, of course KO can pull up anywhere inside of 26 feet.

Being confident and aggressive makes any player better, but Especially so for a mobile 7 footer with feathery touch and every scoring move in the book.

And what's nuts is his impact is Already off the charts

His cumulative +/-, for the season, on a 40 win team, in just 66-67 games, and 22 mpg, was about the same as guys like Jimmy Butler and a bunch of other stars, guys on great winning teams who played a lot more minutes than KO, in much better situations.

My point being, some people act like KO might one day be a worthwhile player, but he's already way, way more valuable than merely worthwhile.

And as far as PF vs C, a stretch center is simply way way more valuable than a stretch 4.

And with a stretch 4 like Jerebko playing next to stretch 5 Olynyk, the results were absolutely off the charts. Guys like IT4 had a wide open lane and merely had to get past their own guy. With Rozier now in the fold as well, I expect Brad to use more lineups with two stretch bigs.

I saw the whole game and Kelly played great,while wiggins,Corey Joseph,Bennett and Stauskas were awful.By the way he scored 34 points and they were playing tough defense.He is stronger and even blocked some shots.He was going coast to coast without loosing the ball and made some good passes.He grabbed rebounds with authority and in the games against bigger teams like Mexico and Argentina he did the same.Believe me he is great shape and I thinks is going to have a very good year with the Celtics.

Not sure why I should be impressed against Mexico, but Argentina? If you can play well against Argentina, man, those are some tough, tough hombres.

We should keep in mind that this will only be Kelly's 3rd year in the league. It is not unusual for big men to need a few more years than wings to grow into the game. He just needs to shoot more. If he attacks offensively then you'll think "Dirk 2.0" and if he doesn't shoot then his weak defense is what you'll remember. Nobody thinks "Dirk sucks because he's so weak defensively". They think "Jeez! How the hell do you stop a guy that tall that can shoot like that?!" and overlook his defense.

Bob,
Mexico has a very good big man in Gustavo Ayon who was having stats of 22 points and 12 rebounds in the tournament.He played in the NBA and currently is playing with Real Madrid in Spain,he is very tough around the basket.

Ayon played overseas, came to the NBA, was a journeyman with with 4 teams in 4 years and is now back in Europe. He's 6'10", 250#, a solid NBA body, but never played for an NBA team for more than 1 year. 4 teams in 4 years. He averaged less than 17mpg. The fact that he played in the NBA for 4 years tells me that he has some talent. The fact that he played for 4 teams in those 4 years tells me that he is a lot more promise than usable product. They all gave him a chance and he couldn't make it work.

I don't see where he is as good as any of our power forwards or centers, even the ones down the bench. Sorry.

The problem with you and the others who doesn't see international basketball and in this case Fiba America Basketball is you don't know the difference between NBA and Fiba basketball.Lets talk about,first contact and hard fouls are alloud in fiba,players like Gustavo Ayon and Luis Scola are much better players in international basketball than Tristan Thompson,not in the NBA but in fiba yes they are.Players like Nene,Varejao,Anthony Bennett,Tristan Thompson and many good nba players cant outplayed Ayon playing in Mexico with a crowd of 20,000 screaming all the time.Andrew Wiggings ,Bennett,Nick Stauskas and Corey Joseph disappeared against Venezuela,but Kelly scores 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds with a latin crowd of 20,000 screaming Venezuela,Venezuela !!!!That is not easy,beleive me Fiba international basketball is not easy nowadays.In preseason we will have the opportunity to see the Celtics vs Real Madrid and then we will talk about it.
