Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens keeps his cool as the bench erupts after a first quarter basket against the Brooklyn Nets at TD Garden on Monday, October 19, 2015.

A look at the Celtics roster for the new season, along with insight into how each player adds to the team's Basketball IQ:

AVERY BRADLEY - #0

Size: 6-2, 180 Age: 24

Experience: 6th year

College: Texas

Skinny: Will combine with Marcus Smart to form one of the finest defensive backcourts in the league. Time to develop that inconsistent jumper, which deserted him at the worst possible time in last season’s first-round playoff loss to Cleveland. Four years left on a trade-friendly contract.

Smart fact: An unusual gift for cutting and moving without the ball.

JAE CROWDER - #99

Size: 6-6, 235 Age: 25

Experience: 4th year

College: Marquette

Skinny: Along with Bradley and Marcus Smart, he’s the tone setter for what should be a strong defensive starting unit. An improved 3-pointer could take him to the next level. Signed a $35 million, five-year deal last summer because he believes management is serious about winning.

Smart fact: Has the acumen, as well as the physical ability, to guard three positions.

R.J. HUNTER - #28

Size: 6-6, 190 Age: 22

Experience: Rookie

College: Georgia State

Skinny: The overall level of his game has been something of a surprise, including solid defensive instincts to go along with that much-ballyhooed jumper.

Smart fact: A coach’s son, and it shows. A quick study.

JONAS JEREBKO - #8

Size: 6-10, 231 Age: 28

Experience: 6th year

College: Sweden

Skinny: As much an energy guy as Crowder and another versatile defender. Particularly athletic against power forwards. Also like Crowder, re-signed in the offseason for two years and $10 million (team option second year) because he believes in Brad Stevens’ vision.

Smart fact: Great anticipation has made him an exceptional offensive rebounder.

AMIR JOHNSON - #90

Size: 6-9, 240

Age: 28

Experience: 11th year

College: Westchester H.S. (Calif.)

Skinny: May start the season coming off the bench, but outside of rookie Jordan Mickey he’s the best rim protector on the roster. Like David Lee, a great stabilizing influence. Considered an under-the-radar free agent signing (two years, $24 million, team option second year).

Smart fact: Great ability to read teammates. Already playing as if he’s been here for five years.

DAVID LEE - #42

Size: 6-9, 245

Age: 32

Experience: 11th year

College: Florida

Skinny: An offensive touchstone, his playmaking will make life easy for a young group of point guards. In the final year of his contract, and will be playing for his next deal — a nice added incentive.

Smart fact: Prototypical point forward who invariably makes the other four guys better.

JORDAN MICKEY - #55

Size: 6-8, 235

Age: 21

Experience: Rookie

College: LSU

Skinny: Rookie, but he’s already the best shot blocker on the team.

Smart fact: Has proven he can make plays at an NBA level.

KELLY OLYNYK - #41

Size: 7-0, 238

Age: 24

Experience: 3rd year

College: Gonzaga

Skinny: Deeper range than Lee, with the makings of an equally adept playmaker. As always, has to overcome a reluctance to let it fly. Too good a shooter to be timid.

Smart fact: Former high school quarterback.

TERRY ROZIER - #12

Size: 6-2, 190

Age: 21

Experience: Rookie year

College: Louisville

Skinny: His quickness and skills off the dribble may be good enough to occasionally crack the rotation.

Smart fact: Great defensive instincts and has shown flashes of decision-making that can keep up with his superior speed.

MARCUS SMART - #36

Size: 6-4, 220

Age: 21

Experience: 2nd year

College: Oklahoma State

Skinny: Doesn’t have a defensive weakness, thanks to anticipation that makes him as good off the ball and in the passing lanes as he is on the ball. Came back with an improved 3-pointer. Showing more ability to get into the paint and use his superior size to draw contact.

Smart fact: Loves his leadership role and makes others want to follow.

JARED SULLINGER - #7

Size: 6-9, 260

Age: 23

Experience: 4th year

College: Ohio State

Skinny: Begins a year under the microscope because of his battle with conditioning and weight. Best post scorer on the team and one of the best rebounders. Eligible to sign an extension on his rookie contract, but team has been reluctant. Management wants to see some proof of his worthiness first.

Smart fact: Another coach’s son with polished offensive skills to show for his upbringing. As good a passer out of the post as Olynyk is from the perimeter.

ISAIAH THOMAS - #4

Size: 5-9, 185

Age: 26

Experience: 5th year

College: Washington

Skinny: No. 1 scoring option who will improve as Stevens finds a way to pair him with better floor spacers. Has grudgingly accepted sixth man role, though he’s one of best in the league. Working on his arsenal, with a one-handed floater.

Smart fact: Learning to create as much offense for teammates as for himself.

EVAN TURNER - #11

Size: 6-7, 220

Age: 27

Experience: 6th year

College: Ohio State

Skinny: Great knack for hitting big shots, and probably the most offensively versatile player on the team. Will be interesting to see if he’s allowed to play as much with the ball in his hands this year. In final year of his contract, which also makes Turner one of the easier players to move.

Smart fact: Point guard instincts in a small forward’s body.

JAMES YOUNG - #13

Size: 6-6, 215

Age: 20

Experience: 2nd year

College: Kentucky

Skinny: Struggled to break through in preseason, but keep in mind that he’s still the youngest player on the roster, including this year’s three rookies. Has worked hard to boost his value on the defensive side of the ball.

Smart fact: Pure shooter’s instinct, with absurdly quick release.

TYLER ZELLER - #44

Size: 7-0, 253

Age: 25

Experience: 4th year

College: North Carolina

Skinny: Perhaps the most consistent player on the roster, and that evenness at both ends of the floor is a big reason he’ll probably start at center on opening night. Like Sullinger, eligible for an extension on his rookie deal.

Smart fact: Great instincts for running the floor and giving his point guards a target at the rim.

bob
MY NOTE: So, James Young's "Smart Fact" is that he is a shooter with a absurdly quick release? Wow, now that's BBIQ!!
