SALT LAKE CITY -- Kelly Olynyk's second opinion did not reveal any serious shoulder issues, but the Boston Celtics still expect the big man to miss two weeks, according to team president of basketball operations Danny Ainge.
On a conference call, Ainge said Olynyk met Thursday morning with a doctor in Los Angeles, who will help the Celtics medical staff and team trainer Ed Lacerte come up with a treatment plan.
"He definitely won't be playing for the next couple weeks, it looks like," Ainge said. "But we're not sure. Right now it's still sore and bothering him, and we don't need any surgery or (have) any long-term fears for him. But right now it's a short-term ailment that will keep him on the sidelines for I'm guessing -- this is just a guess -- two weeks."
Olynyk suffered the injury, which was initially diagnosed as a bruise, during the final game before the All-Star break. With him on the shelf, the Celtics called rookie Jordan Mickey before he could get on a flight to join the team's D-League affiliate in Delaware. The young big man instead traveled to Utah, where he joined the Celtics mid-practice. Fellow rookie R.J. Hunter was also summoned from his initial D-League plans.
Mickey has not appeared in a game since spraining his ankle on Jan. 16 during D-League action. But with David Lee's agent negotiating a probable buyout and Olynyk expected to miss a number of games (seven, assuming he sits for exactly two weeks), Mickey could be a candidate for his first meaningful NBA action whenever he works himself back into game shape.
"It's one of the reasons why obviously we brought him back out," said Celtics head coach Brad Stevens. "I think just having those guys available, more bodies available is a good thing. But we'll see. He's got to get back up to speed with playing and everything else because he hasn't played 5-on-5 in a long time and he hasn't played with us for the better part of the last few months."
Mickey was selected to the D-League All-Star Game thanks to averages of 17.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and a league-high 4.6 blocks for the Maine Red Claws. He did not play in the game, though, because of the ankle injury.

I mentioned this on that thread as well and now I see this.
Sounds good. It make sense to get him some time because if we went into the playoffs and had some injuries to our bigs he would be more able to fill in and help this ball club.

Bottom line is we are not going to the top this season. Not that it's a waste by any means but giving this kid some meaningful minutes can we truly see what he has to offer and thus increase DA's options down the road in obtaining an upgrade in talent. Next fall with our core intact and some newer (better) pieces I think we can contend but that is a ways off.
