Theis is a 6’9’’, 25 year old forward/center from Germany. He’s been a professional since 2011 and has played with Lowen Braunschweig, Ratiopharm Ulm and Brose Baskets in the German Basketball Bundesliga. In 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 he was a German BBL All-Star Starter and was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2016-17. He was also named the Best National Player in the BBL in 2015-2016.

Theis was an Early Entry candidate in the 2013 NBA Draft, but went undrafted.

Theis also played with the German National Team in 2014 and 2016 in EuroBasket qualifiers. His lone NBA experience was five Summer League games with the Washington Wizards in 2014.

Theis projects as a backup big man in the NBA. He’s an athletic and somewhat rugged forward/center who can block some shots and rebound. His offensive game is fairly limited, as he takes most of his shots inside the paint, with the occasional jumper mixed in.

At this time contract terms are not known, but you can expect it to be for two years for some portion of guaranteed money. He’s likely to sign using the Minimum Exception after the Celtics have completed their other offseason transactions, in order for Boston to preserve cap space.

A cheaper Jonas Jerebko?

6'9", 215#.  Looks like he has a good motor, like Jonas.  Wingspan unknown, but he looks long. Some real flying blocks on those video highlights.

41% from 3.  Euro 3 looks the same as NBA 3.


We need someone like Jonas, this guy could work.  He's 25 years old.

That probably means no Mickey.  It seems to me that Mickey is the logical successor to Jerebko but, if we sign this guy, Mickey is still on the taxi squad...

I do not see Mickey as a successor to Jerebo as he is just not as "aware" on the court, nor is he any kind of shooter like Jerebko was prior to getting his nose broken.

I have never hard of this German guy, but he looks much more like a Jerebko replacement than Mickey.

What would it take to acquire Theis?

he will only cost us salary.
looks like he went undrafted in 2013, so he is a UFA.

I would guess Danny may be looking to bring him in for Summer league to be honest. If he plays well, probably a vet minimum non guaranteed deal for camp. He played summer league with the wizards a couple years ago.

How can a guy who has never even been drafted by an NBA team get a veteran minimum contract? Wouldn't he sign a rookie contract?

Yes and no.  He wasn't drafted, so he isn't subject to the rookie salary scale defined in the CBA.  There are, however, salary minimums for free agents.

I'm assuming the experience levels refer to NBA years only, so he could get as little as $815K. Whether that would be enough to entice him I don't know. International would have a much better handle on that than me.

How does the German League rank vs other Euro leagues?  Different leagues develop reputations for certain styles of play, and therefore the type of players that play well in that style.  My impression, perhaps incorrect, is that the Adriatic League (where Zizic and Saric and Jokic and others) has a rep for being a great source for quality bigs.  So, maybe a bit more physical.

Do you know if the German League Theis plays in is known for a certain style of play or type of player?  Theis might be the best defender in the German League, but that means nothing to me.  Guerschon Yabusele might have been the best defender in the Chinese League last year.  That wouldn't tell me much given the lack of even a sniff of defense in that league.  I'm looking for some perspective on a league that I am unfamiliar with, if you know of it.  Thanks.

The German league is in my opinion the 5th league in Europe,But his team has been the champion on the last 3 seasons.It is a tough league and sometimes tends to play dirty.His team play with the best in the Euroleague.On the German National team he plays with Dennis Schroder,Paul Zipser and sometimes Dirk Nowitzki,Isaac Hartestain is not a member on that squad yet.Contrary to you,i think the fact that he has been selected 3 times defensive player of the year, is very important.

Theis is 3x DPOY in his league? I didn't realize that. Hmm. And they play physical, even dirty? Cowens will be in love. If he knocks DWade on his ass once or twice I might go weak-kneed too.

Ok, let's get him over here for summer league so we can take a look at him. Boy, Danny and the Celtics have really gone whole hog on international scouting. They went from hardly ever having an international player to Krstic and Gigi and Jonas and Yabby and Zizic. And that doesn't even include the Canadians.
