Cleveland Cavaliers big man Tristan Thompson could miss a month with a left calf injury he suffered during Wednesday night's loss to the Indiana Pacers, a person with knowledge of the injury confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke under the condition of anonymity because a timetable for Thompson's return had not yet been announced.

Thompson, now in his seventh NBA season, is averaging just 4.4 points and 6.4 rebounds for the 3-5 Cavs. He has never missed more than six games in a season.

The Vertical first reported Thompson's injury timetable.

More to come ...

MY NOTE:  If you thought the Cavs were struggling before...Zizic is going to get his shot.  Now we'll start to see what we gave up.

Cleveland could be facing a perfect storm and not even make the playoffs. Love is not a center. Wade and Korver look cooked. Maybe Zizic will save their season, but that is a long shot.

Even if Isaiah makes it back, it could be too late for them.

Sometimes I get bored with the Celtics, so I try to line up a couple other story lines to feel more involved. One of them is Cleveland's apparent demise and how LeBron will react.

I am a good fan. I just don't like watching every minute every game anymore. Or maybe I am still recovering (as a fan) from the Hayward injury. I also like the games better when Tommy is announcing. If it's a road game, I need a certain caliber of opponent to maximise my attention.

Phil Pressey,

It seems that over the last 15 or so years that I find my self much more interested in the NBA in general and do not limit my self to strictly following the Celts. That's not the way it was for me back in the 50's and 60's - but that's probably because there were not nearly as many out of town games to view. (I have league pass). My interest now is much more varied.

I'm more the type satisfied by just checking the standings for other teams. It's too early to think about the Laker pick. Cleveland looks interesting. Sometimes it's fun to root for a team's demise.

I'm a bit interested in the Clippers, Houston, Oklahoma. I don't have much faith in any of them, but they do have superstars.

The Celtics are my team. The roster has settled in. I am psyched for the big picture. We're in the hunt.

Phil and Swish,

The way I read your comments, I'd say you're a couple of well-rounded sports fans whose favorite team is The Celtics. In my opinion, that makes you more knowledgable than someone who watches no other team (or sport). It also explains some of the well thought out comments we read from each of you.

I also second Phil's thoughts on games with Tommy.

As for the Tristian Thompson situation, I would have already expected Cleveland to express more interest in pursuing Jahlil Okafor. Now I would bet on some very serious talks, very soon.  Like maybe earlier this morning.

Thanks NYCelt.

I'm one of the luckiest guys in the world - having had the good fortune to have been eyewitness to the sporting world of the 40's on up, and in great detail I was pretty up to date on the history of all the major sports of the day dating back to the history of the great players and teams dating back to the late teens. Back in the early years my number one passion was by far baseball - that's what the great Yankee team of 1927 did to me - but for whatever reason basketball is now the leader. I gather that baseball is big in your sports life.

Swish,

Yeah, baseball over anything. I was lucky enough to play in college; Division III, I was no D1 talent. My son is now part of a development program run by a college team. I get to enjoy watching his school and travel team games. He's not yet 14 and I can already see he'll be far better than I ever was. Coaching football was incredibly special too. I miss that, but enjoy watching my son QB his school team. The Celtics are the one NBA team I follow closely, mostly due to my parents connections to the early NBA Rochester Royals and a former Celtics owner. College sports are more my thing; give me any NCAA football or basketball game. To me those are the pinnacle of sports. I'm working on an opportunity to go to next year's College World Series in Omaha as well.

I value talking with someone who has your background, and I think it's part of what makes this forum so strong. There is significance in having a view across several eras. I think people are missing the point when they dismiss comparisons of one era to another. There is the valid claim that you can't compare players; yes, that's true. But any sport builds on each subsequent era, and to have seen one after another is to understand the strategies and style of any game.

You're a good guy, NY Celt. Thank you and others for being very nice.

I am a self-defined provincial fan who used to follow all the teams including hockey. I played a little of each sport growing up, but basketball was the one in which I had a mini-basketball court as did most of us back in the Seventies.

As a kid, two things stood out. The Red Sox always found a way to lose and seemed curse. On the flip side, there was this other team called the Celtics who came very close to sweeping a whole decade. That fact always made the Red Sox much easier to take.

2003 Red Sox-N.Y. was insane and then 2004 was simply mind-blowing and pure justice for all of us.

The Patriots got the ball rolling in 2001. I might have kept an eye on the Red Sox winning it all again in I think 2007. Once the Bruins won their Stanley Cup, I was satiated.

I am definitely a one sport person at this point in my life and I don't think that will change. Baseball is too slow. I can never see the puck in hockey games. Football is kind of fun to watch, but I was never a big person and sort of can't relate to it. All of the players getting concussions and ending up with life-long health ailments was kind of my personal final straw. I think this was around the same time Ted Johnson revealed his horrific brain trauma. Or maybe that was earlier, but it did make an impression.

I was very young when Stingley became paralyzed, but I never forgot it.

I loved the Pierce-KG era up to around 2012. My interest started to wane.

I got back into it full-time when Brad arrived with Olynyk. That was the most enjoyable 25 win team I've ever witnessed.

I enjoyed the Jordan Crawford and Evan Turner mini-eras.

The Celtics just kept on improving making it impossible to lessen caring.

We got Isaiah. That kept it going.

Last year was not bad. We got blown out by the Cavs, but otherwise it was another step forward.

Danny then went for fireworks. Hayward got hurt. Somehow after 8 games we have the best record in the league.

It is still early, but this is a very interesting season. Thankfully the team has bonded quickly so we get to avoid a month or two of what's wrong with them and other forms of negativity.

I was a huge College fan at one time - season ticket holder for Providence College basketball.

Below link is a stat sheet for the entire 1950-51 Rochester Royal championship year. It should bring back some pleasant memories.

Here are the weights of the front court players.
  Johnson,,, 236, Coleman,,,195, Risen,,,200, McNamee,,,210, Noel,,,185
Davies and Wanzer were big back court stars - Risen was one of the 3 best centers.

It is never good for any team to lose a starting center for an extensive period of time. This is the reason that I would like to see Ainge still get us another center type guy on the roster to protect against an injury to either Horford or Baynes.

I like Theis and Ojeleye as they have made some nice complimentary contributions, but they are not really the center types like Horford and Baynes. Yabasele has certainly not proven himself beyond being the 13th man on the roster, and none of the smaller forward types (Brown, Nader, Tatum, etc) can play the center spot.

Swish,

Funny you should mention Arnie Johnson, one of the big men back then at 6'5".

My mother worked with Arnie for a number of years. After basketball he had a long career as a VP at Bausch & Lomb, Inc. He was a great guy, and had the good sense to marry one of the Bausch daughters too!

Thanks for posting that link; I just shared it with my mom!

The court in the arena where the big high school tourney I co-sponsor is played is named the Bobby Wanzer court. Bobby used to give Cousy fits; Couz hated playing against him. Wanzer passed last year, the last of that championship team.

KG had to move to center. He was getting old. Horford is younger with less NBA mileage at the same point in Celtic careers. Al has shown that he can still move. The jury was out, but he looks like he is in a player's pure prime years and is best suited as a KG styled power forward.

So I agree with Clyde we are missing a backup center. This is why I think we don't need Morris. It's not that I don't like him. He's probably an upgrade on Ojeleye anyway. I don't think he moves the needle or provides much insurance. Maybe I'm wrong. He looks like a Crowder. He's a pro but not exactly that good. They are consistent and can be counted on. But this is needle moving time. If Baynes got hurt, Horford would have to play center and then we're a fake contender.

I'm glad to see Danny has evolved from his midget ball GM days. Here's hoping he and Brad have finally figured out the big center role and build on and protect it.

Tell your Mom that the Royals were a big part of my basketball life back in the early 50's. While players like those Royals players of the early 50's are unknown by most present day fans - its players like Davis, Wanzer and Risen who were the big time super stars in my day. Time marches on.

swish

Note,,, Another player that gave Cousy fits was Slater Martin of Laker fame - who let it be know to Cousy, that he didn't take kindly to Cousy doing his "hot dogging" against him.
Note,,, Ask your Mom if there are still some unattached Bausch Woman around - Just kidding.

That company has been sold a couple of times now. Would you settle for the address of an attractive European leveraged buy-out specialist? Very Happy

This only adds to the Cavs' woes. Their defense was already suspect by giving up 112 PPG, which is 27th in the league.

It probably doesn't help that Lebron gets 4.5 turnovers a game. Out of the 22 TOs the Cavs had against the Pacers, 8 of those were Lebron's.

Structurally, the Cavs have major issues. They can't defend the 3PT shooters and they can't run the court all night. A decently athletic team with some shooters should be able to feast on Lebron and his subordinates. Opposing teams are shooting 47% FGs, including 41% 3PT shooting. You can't beat anyone playing this poorly on defense.
