Hard to imagine a guy who made $100 million in his pro career filing for bankruptcy but here it is:


Ex-NBA star Antoine Walker files for bankruptcy

MIAMI (AP)—Former NBA all-star Antoine Walker has filed for bankruptcy.

In Chapter 7 documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of Florida last week, Walker reported having $4.3 million in assets and $12.7 million in liabilities.

Walker’s 2006 NBA championship ring, valued at $6,000, is included in a list of assets.

It’s not the first time Walker has faced financial trouble. In November 2009, he agreed to pay more than $900,000 to settle bad check charges at three Las Vegas casinos and avoid trial on felony criminal charges.

Walker was a three-time all-star with the Boston Celtics. He won the 2006 championship with the Miami Heat.

Walker’s attorney did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Unfortunately, Toine may rank as my biggest Celtics disappointment.

I remember when he first joined the team, and I heard about his multi-tool talents. I had not even seen a picture of him; and, upon hearing all these things, I pictured this lean and mean guy who might even make us feel less badly about Len Bias.

Then I got a look at him, and he just didn't look like that guy. And, as time wore on and I grew increasingly horrified at a lot of his decisions on the court, the sinking feeling grew inside me. The stupid shimmy was the antithesis of what I had grown to expect from a Celtic, as was his ability to say all the right things to the media while doing so many wrong things on the floor.

I heard about how dedicated he was to winning. Well, in the first place, that's sort of expected of a Celtic; so it's nice but nothing special in my mind. In the second place, his actions belied that claim. Yes, he wanted to win, but I always felt he wanted to win mostly if he could do it on his terms.

I feel badly about his current plight; but I have to say it reflects more of the poor decision-making that's my most lasting impression of him.

I hope his life straightens out.

Gambling can bite you in the arse. For some it's like a drug addiction. I feel bad for his family more than him. It was a choice he made. He has to live with it.
