Kyrie Irving

Thought I'd start a thread dedicated to Kyrie. He is SUCH a critical member of the roster. A question is "how much does he give up on defense even as he gives us gift after gift on offense?".

Kyrie Irving is now averaging 41.5 points and 6.8 assists per 36 minutes in the clutch (69 minutes). His offensive rating during those minutes is 128.8 and his defensive rating is 100.0.

By comparison, /36mpg overall season-to-date:

26 ppg, 7.0 assists. His offensive rating (which is /100 possessions) is 117 and his defensive rating is 105.


So, he is averaging more than 50% more points/minute and almost the same number of assists/minute overall. That his clutch offensive rating is higher than normal is to be expected, he's scoring more, but his defensive rating is lower. Last year his offensive/defensive rating differential was 11.0. This year it's 12.0.

KI would be a defensive liability. But he does hustle and does try to help. Therefore he isn't a liability on defense.

MY NOTE:  This is over 4 OT games, approximately 161 1/2 minutes of play, 40:15 per game.  He's averaging 32mpg this year, so a lot of minutes in those games for him.
