NBA all-player call set for Friday, sources say Empty NBA all-player call set for Friday, sources say

Post by dboss Thu May 07, 2020 4:23 pm

Three teams -- the Portland Trail BlazersDenver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers -- have told ESPN they plan to reopen Friday, while several other teams said they hope to open next week.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29143923/nba-all-player-call-set-friday-sources-say

My Note:

You probably read this already.  This could be the first step in trying to reset the NBA season/playoffs.

There is risk involved with this but there is no way to measure the extent.  I do not see how you can put humpty dumpty back together again this season.  Covid 19 is like playing a game of tag but not knowing who is IT.

Fans like most of us miss the game terribly but at the same time we have concerns about the health of players and their families.  If they start playing again and just one guy tests +, both teams would probably need to be quarantined.

Maybe their aim is to just let players workout in a voluntary setting with restrictions.

When this virus broke out and the NBA stopped playing I thought maybe around June 1st they could get back in the mix.  That was overly optimistic.

I think the NBA should focus on the draft.  Since individual team visits may be too risky the candidates could workout remotely while teams stream those sessions.  Then they can interview candidates, watch more film and make a decision.  The lack of a combine however may make it difficult to obtain key metrics and other measurements.  If a guy works outs out remotely some of those metrics could be obtained but again the logistics of trying to do that all over the country would be very challenging.  And you can forget about any 5 on 5 game simulations.

Most teams have the same handicaps but maybe those with more resources and creativity could have an advantage.

Agreed we love the game, but it’s just a game, this Covid 19 is life and death and we are still in uncharted areas. Until there are real real low numbers and we know it’s under control, I wouldn’t risk the players health.

the obsession with finishing the season is really getting ridiculous. I just read on another basketball website that the season (2019-2020) could play into October. That is foolish.
I am really NOT in favor of the next season starting in December. They already go into June to
finish the playoffs and that is crazy. So, by starting in December, they will be playing basketball
in July and maybe the start of August. Cut their losses, go ahead little by little with practice facilities opening, and get ready for next season. I may be in the minority here, and believe me I miss basketball immensely but logic should play into this decision

Agreed Rosalie. I'm beginning to think some of the teams led by a couple of players with considerable motivation and legacies on the line that have a legitimate shot at the title are feverishly at work behind the scenes to complete the season and playoffs. The list is short.

Lakers have probably the most reasons to want to finish things up in 2020. LeBron ain't getting any younger, has already started to develop a nagging groin injury and you never know when the window is slammed tight shut until it's too late and the lights have gone out. You only see it in the rear view mirror of your career.

Milwaukee, not so much but still has a beef and a legit shot for NBA Champions 2020. Giannis can wait. He has time and youth on his side.

TOR comes up in the conversation next. They look good and are fighting the good fight post-championship, but are all pretty sure the wheels will come off at some point. They aren't getting to the finals again without KL or a very, very close facsimile.

Next in line I'd put us and LAC. We know we are a little light thanks to all the unprecedented injuries and would need some serious help and breaks to get to the Finals this season. LAC has been up and down so much this season, and no disrespect to Doc, but I don't know if they can figure it all out in time.

Hapless Houston is next. They are really a 2nd Round exiter at best.

We are talking about huge, unimaginable sums of money involved that would be lost to cut the season and slam on the brakes. The only example I can think of in which to compare this in a completely negative way is Ken Lay of Enron. But it drives home the point He was cruising along making literally hundreds of millions of dollars personally and then the jig was up. His income went from 9-figures to zero pretty much overnight and then negative because the expenses did not stop right away. Massive liquidation of the non-frozen funds not frozen were executed and burned up in the ensuing fire in very short order in an effort to keep the lights on. All that stress resulted in a heart attack and his death.

The league knows some of these smaller markets can't survive the season shutting down. They will look at EVERY possible angle in order to complete the season and drag it out until the last possible day before admitting 2020 is over ahead of time. I know they have emergency measures in place because the season does shut down from time to time with strikes, lockouts, etc. Those are resolved relatively quickly because everyone has to come to the table. But like was said above, we still don't even know who or what we are dealing with or fighting against. There certainly is no end in site with this as of today.

Here in NC, we have just started Phase I of three to get back to normal. I thought for sure they were going to push back the May 8th start date for this because the metrics they were using to allow these phases to proceed were not met. The Governor has been picketed to death by those wanting to get back to work. There were even idiots trying to break into his mansion. I think he finally gave in. The cure reaches a point where it can't be worse than the disease. Now granted the first Phase is really light and the next two are the big high-risk ones, but the result is the same. We have no idea what is out there. Like fighting a ghost.

From reading the notes from the player's call, it sounds like Silver is still hanging on to continuing the season in some asterisk form. But he's right...the CBA is not built to handle a prolonged pandemic. He's trying to find a balance on a razor's edge beam with the wind blowing a hundred miles an hour and no balancing pole, all in a valiant effort to make players, management, owners, players, potential draftees and fans happy. This is a huge balancing act COVID-19 has thrown upon the league. Really impossible IMHBAO.

Rosalie, at some point Silver has to say, eff it, cut the cord and cancel the season.

NBA all-player call set for Friday, sources say Empty Re: NBA all-player call set for Friday, sources say

Post by dboss Wed May 13, 2020 5:56 pm

Discussions centered on health and safety concerns, including the goal of getting team officials and players comfortable with the idea that a positive test for the coronavirus upon a return would not shutter play.

Asked about the bubble-isolation plan on the call, Silver described it as a "campus environment," sources said. He has talked about one or two locations for players, and the focus continues to be on Orlando's Walt Disney World Resort and Las Vegas, sources said.

My Note

Professional sports is not an essential activity when measured against the potential spread of an insidious virus.

Silver wants a buy in that if one player tests positive the games will go on.  Strange logic here.  If a player were to test positive then his team would need to go into quarantine.  And if that player also came in contact with players from another team thy too would need to be quarantined.  That is of course unless the NBA is bigger than CDC guidelines.

There is talk about having games at one or two locations.  At Disney and in Vegas.  That should work out well given those fantasy venues.

How About "NO"

The NBA needs to rely on health professionals and their recommendations and not the owners and not the players.  Seems that as soon as a country loosens  things up we see a new spike and outbreak.

This is a lost season and at this point in time there is no good reason to try and find it.  The NBA indicates they would need at least 15,000 tests  for frequent testing.  How about donating those test so that essential workers can get tested.

You are 100% spot on. We all miss the games but there are so much more important things than tv revenue money grabs and certain player's quest to enhance their "legacy". Listen to the experts, devote whatever resources that you'd use toward testing players and support personnel to your local communities and frontline responders, and hope that a January 2021 season start can possibly happen.

I totally agree, time to throw in the towel for this year and work on getting rules in place for the next (?) season.  I have been watching the back and forth on television for the last few days.  If we follow the doctors and scientists, they would say NO to sports right now.  I have to tell you, life as we knew it has changed.  How soon will you feel comfortable in a restaurant, gym, coffee shop??

I am still waiting for the specialists to call me and say that I can have my surgery.  MGH is beginning to take in a few patients, so I am on the clock,  waiting for the call. My problem is that they cannot call me and say “come in tomorrow we have open time slots”. I have to have blood work done, stop coumadin for three days, and have a Covid test 48 hrs before the surgery.  Nothing simple in Rosalie’s world!!!!

Too many people have died, too many still suffering, time to call it a season, Mr Silver.  There are more important things than basketball. I just wonder if they have the guts to do it or these guys will be playing again in the hot summer.

Sorry, just my opinion, did not mean to go on and on.  Hope all is well with everyone

Rosalie

Hang in there.  It has been a crazy time.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

On a lighter note, I spoke with one of my daughters who lives in St Pete, FL.  She's an accountant and works from home because of the pandemic..  Her husband unfortunately got furlough without pay and has been waiting 7 weeks to get his unemployment.  He's from LA and is a bigtime Lakers fan.  I told him, you Lakers fans are always looking for a handout.  Good thing you're with my daughter.  She's a Celtics fan and knows how to take care of business.

NBA all-player call set for Friday, sources say Empty Re: NBA all-player call set for Friday, sources say

In my opinion...

The NBA is already done for the year. They just haven't come to grips with that reality. If they call it now, there is a slight chance to regroup and do the planning for a normal '20 - '21 schedule, and a better chance for an abbreviated season played mostly or all in '21.

I'm also thinking...

MLB has a shot at the proposed 82 game season; IF the players recognize a good offer and agree. The players association risks driving fans away like they did in the last strike if they continue to posture over money.

NFL will play. To a limited number of fans in the stadiums, however.

NCAA sports across the board face the biggest dilemma. Some campuses are set to open, others have already said they won't be back in the fall. BIG consequences here since football pays a high percentage of the bills on many campuses. The NFL playing is also key here, since many NFL training camps are held at colleges. NFL teams often pay for significant campus upgrades on and off the field at those schools.

...The human part of the equation is most important, but the fact is that sports are an enormous economic driver in this country, and most of the developed world. We may want to see sports return, but the economy needs the games to be played.

The NFL is determined to go on as planned. MLB is talking about July, So what are they talking about? Pay per view??? Where is the $$$ coming from to keep these teams going? One way or another the fans will pay to watch these games. I just do not see the NBA finishing the season, but there are all those stories floating out there about Disneyworld/land, wherever, and Las Vegas.
So, are they going to do something and again, make us pay to watch? This is a sports starved nation right now, I believe people will pay for a short time, but not for all. Either that or the money from any tv coverage will help pay the bills.

Unbelievable that is the only word I can use to describe what is happening

Rosalie,

Even if there are no fans at the games, sports teams can still make considerable revenue from having the games on TV.
Some revenue is better than no revenue.
The NBA wants to crown a champion this season. So does the NHL.
Baseball, football and college sports want to get their seasons going, even if they are shortened seasons.
If there are problems, they will shut it down.
Supposedly, the NBA and NHL want to move right into the playoffs, which makes sense.
Why make non-playoff teams play meaningless games against other non-playoff teams?
The 14 non-playoff teams in the NBA can consider their seasons over.

TJ,

IF they come back for some type of playoffs (after a training camp of some type for teams).

I'd like to see ALL teams play in it, with the top seeds in each conference getting a first round bye..

first and second rounds could be best of 3 series. It wouldn't add many days to the timing.

Boston would play the Hawks in the first round

Bucks and Lakers would get first round byes.

Kdp,

I haven’t heard any rumors about changing the playoff format.
This season is already going to end incredibly late.
I don’t think the league wants playoff games with the bad teams in the league playing.
I don’t feel it’s worthwhile for GS or Atlanta or Minnesota to bring their players together, go through a training camp, then get swept in 3 games and go home again.
Keep the format the way it is.

I think that if the NBA starts up it would be for the playoffs.  I see no reason to complete the regular season schedule.  They probably use regular season standings at the point of the shutdown to seed teams.  There will be no home court advantage.  There will be no fans.  Teams that are physically fit would have an advantage.

While I would like to see games I think playing games increases the risk of spreading a virus that has already proven to be quite deadly.
