Paul Pierce has jokes about LeBron James buying into Red Sox ownership

The Boston Red Sox faithful got a surprise earlier this week when it was revealed that LeBron James was going to be joining Fenway Sports Group as a part-owner of the team.

After all, James was a long-time Eastern Conference rival of the Boston Celtics during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. So, it seemed like an odd marriage to some.

Paul Pierce certainly found some humor in it. In a recent appearance on NBC Sports Boston's Celtics Pregame Live, Pierce joked about James wanting to "troll" Boston fans with his move.

The first thing that comes to mind when I saw LeBron in ownership was wow. Just wow. He just continues to own Boston. He continues to troll us.

That's a pretty funny quip from Pierce that elicited a laugh from both Brian Scalabrine and Kendrick Perkins.

Pierce obviously has a point, too. James has a 25-16 record against the Celtics in eight playoff series against them during his career. James' teams have won six of those eight series.

Jokes aside, Pierce greatly appreciates what James is doing and is hopeful that it will open things up for other players to eventually join the ranks of ownership.

"Hopefully, him putting his foot in the door in ownership along with Michael Jordan you'll see more former players have opportunities like this," Pierce said. "There's more money being made in the game of basketball, football, baseball to where you can have more former players become owners in a game that they've invested so much in and help the valuation of a lot of these franchises go through the roof."

If anyone can help players transition into ownership, it James and Jordan. It will be interesting to see how James does with the Sox and what type of role he takes on with them once his storied NBA career comes to a close.
