Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari suffers left knee injury

Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari suffered a left knee injury while playing in Italy’s FIBA World Cup qualifier against Georgia on Saturday, and NBA sources said the veteran will undergo further testing on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. One NBA source said that initial exams by doctors in Brescia, Italy, showed that the ACL is stable.

Gallinari was hurt when he took a bad step on a fast break early in the fourth quarter of Italy’s 91-84 win. He was helped off the court.

In July, the Celtics bolstered their bench by signing Gallinari to a two-year, $13.3 million deal. The 34-year-old is a career 38.2 percent 3-point shooter and averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Hawks last season.

Celtics training camp is scheduled to begin on Sept. 27.

Latest news is a torn meniscus, not good but probably the best case scenario...considering the alternatives.

Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari tore the meniscus in his left knee during Italy’s FIBA World Cup qualifier against Georgia on Saturday, the Italian national team announced Sunday morning.

Plans for surgery and a potential recovery time were not immediately known. Celtics center Robert Williams missed about a month after tearing his meniscus on March 27, but return to play generally depends on the procedure. The Celtics are scheduled to start training camp on Sept. 27, and they will face the 76ers in their regular-season opener Oct. 18.

Gallinari said on Twitter that he will miss the EuroBasket tournament next month. The 34-year-old forward suffered the non-contact injury on a fast break in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter of his team’s 91-84 win in Brescia, Italy, and was helped off the court

The Celtics signed Gallinari to a two-year, $13.3 million contract last month to boost their bench scoring, which sometimes became an issue during the playoffs. Gallinari averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds for the Hawks last season and is a career 38.2 percent 3-point shooter.

If Gallinari is sidelined at the start of the regular season, fourth-year forward Grant Williams would likely have a larger role as a backup. But the Celtics are likely counting on Gallinari to play only about 20 minutes per game this year.

Real Bummer. The days of playing during the season and then hitting the beach during the off season are long gone. Players play to get better.
Too much is made out of where they got hurt or why.
If it was a Dirt Bike or skiing accident i get the concern. Getting Hurt playing basketball to get better happens. We Wouldn’t feel any better if he got hurt during the season.

It's not his ACL or other ligament damage. It could be worse.

I'm sure they will have a timetable for his expected return out soon. Since he wasn't going to be counted on for huge minutes, the team should be able to give him time to recuperate without rushing back.

When you look at it, this leaves the team no worse off in the front court than they were during the playoffs and finals. Grant Williams has shown he is more than capable of stepping in and filling the void. If RWIII and Horford are ready to go we're OK.

With a stronger backcourt group there may be more single big lineups and the team should still be a little stronger on offense than last season.

This isn't fatal, but it is a loud reminder alarm that there is still some building to do in the frontcourt.

The recovery time for meniscus surgery depends on the type of surgery you had. It takes longer for a meniscus repair to heal than a meniscectomy. Full recovery from meniscus surgery can take anywhere from six weeks to three months.

6-8 weeks is very optimistic.  I would say, see you on Christmas Day Gallinari!

I am sure we will know more soon. Wonder if he will have surgery in the US or Italy.

All I can say for certain is that Galinari won't be a better player after the injury than he was before. Bones get stronger after a break. Not cartilage tissues.

Good point.

I think it may be fortunate that Galinari doesn't depend on speed or a high degree of mobility in his game. With his already long history of knee problems his roll was pretty much already going to be the big who shoots from out around the perimeter for about 15 or so minutes a game.

I would say my own recovery from two meniscus tears was faster than what has been discussed here. One only required rehab, but I was up and active within about 4 weeks after the surgical repair. Not that I put it through the strain of pro sports, of course. I believe this speedy recovery was mostly due to my wife not buying it when I told her the doctor advised I needed to sit on the sofa and watch football all season while the knee healed.

Wise woman.
