Word from Quiet Reader in Japan
I received this brief message from Quiet Reader and thought I'd share it with the board. We have corresponded occasionally, and she seems to be a very sensitive and special person. I hope all will keep Quiet Reader and her countrypeople in their thoughts.
Thank you,
Sam
Here's her message:
Sam,
I just wanted to let you know my city suffered no damage from the earthquake that hit a quarter of Japan yesterday.
Things are getting worse.. Tsunami has washed away several cities and communities already.
It was so devastating to witness it on TV. Cannot find a word...
Despite the enormous damage, people in the devastated areas remain in order.
I keep praying for the sufferers..

Sam

My thoughts and prayers are with all those people in Japan...
It certainly puts things like losing streaks in basketball into perspective.

Breaks my heart to see all the destruction on TV. And that country's economy was just starting to recover from their 20 year stock market slide (down 80% or so from the highs) that has devastated people there for a LONG time.
Not fair.
Not fair.

Sums it up well for me.
Let us all do what we can in our own way and hope for the best for Quiet Reader, her loved ones and countrymen.

Thank you very much for your thoughts
Oh...I just found this topic..and wish to thank you for your kind messages.
This has been really devastating. It was not the earthquake itself but the Tsunami that has given the most damage.
It was reported as high as 10 meters and surged only a half an hour after the first earthquake.
Several cities were washed away .... completely destroyed. Because the disaster-stricken area is densely populated,
we cannot even estimate a total number of victims. It well be more than 2000...at least..
However, things are very much in order.
We are very thankful that America has offered aid so quickly.
Tsunami may also reach some part of America on the Pacific Coast, such as Hawaii, Washington and Oregon.
Hope it brings no damage there. I live in Hokkaido and we also had several Tsunami warnings but none of them
were serious.
Having said that...I am shocked that the Celtics lost against the Sixers!
Hopefully they get back on track and win next.
Thank you indeed for your concern.

I got my start professionally 41 years ago apprenticeing with a Japanese master and learning about Japanese culture, so I have a special appreciation for the enormous dignity of the Japanese people. Note that there has been NO looting since this tragedy occurred. To do so would be an extreme affront to the deep sense of honor that apparently all Japanese people share. Compare their behavior to what happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We have much to learn from the Japanese about being human.
