GAME RECAP WEEI 850

FAST BREAK: DEPLETED CELTICS NO MATCH FOR MAVS

By Paul Flannery

The Celtics came into Monday’s game with the Mavericks having lost three straight and five of six. It was also the second night of a back-to-back on the road and the next one of those they win will be the first.

Brandon Bass is out with knee problems. Kevin Garnett is away from the team and dealing with a family issue, and to top off the impending disaster, Rajon Rondo was suspended two games by the NBA after he threw the ball at referee Sean Wright in Sunday’s game.

In an utterly unsurprising result, they got blasted, 89-73. Give the Celtics who did play some credit. It could have been much worse.

WHAT WENT WRONG

– Without Garnett in the lineup, the Celtics had no one who could guard Dirk Nowitzki. Not surprisingly, the Mavericks took full advantage, not only running their offense through Nowitzki, but also getting Chris Wilcox into quick foul trouble, forcing the Celtics to use Mickael Pietrus on the All-Star.

– Rondo’s going to take some criticism for his suspension and all of it is justified. With his team falling apart, he simply can’t afford to let his emotions get away from him like they did on Sunday. It wasn’t the first time he’s whipped a ball at an official after a call he didn’t like and the NBA came down hard with a two-game suspension. Rondo is 25 years old. He’s a six-year pro and a two-time All-Star. This isn’t about growing up or maturity. It’s about keeping your composure when your team needs you and Rondo messed up. Simple as that.

– Just for kicks, Jermaine O’Neal sprained his wrist and didn’t return to the game. Ditto for Wilcox who strained an abductor muscle. At one point, the Celtics had Marquis Daniels and Pietrus at forward with Keyon Dooling and Ray Allen in the backcourt and Greg Stiemsma at center. That was one of the more conventional lineups the Celtics used in the second half.

WHAT WENT RIGHT

– Avery Bradley played 33 minutes and scored 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting with four rebounds, two assists and just one turnover. He played about as well as could be expected.

– Thanks to a late barrage of 3-pointers from the small-ball lineup, the Celtics were able to avoid a season-low in points. The Phoenix game lives on for another night.

Wilcox (adductor) departs vs. Mavericks

By Chris Forsberg

When it rains it pours for the Celtics.

Just moments after center Jermaine O'Neal left Monday's game against the Dallas Mavericks with a strained left wrist, forward Chris Wilcox departed with an adductor injury and will also not return. The Celtics were already playing without big men Kevin Garnett (personal matter) and Brandon Bass (knee), leaving little depth up front beyond rookies Greg Stiemsma and JaJuan Johnson.

Boston countered the lack of frontcourt depth by going with small-ball lineups while trying to claw their way back from a double-digit deficit against the Mavericks. For an ailing Boston team, the All-Star break can't come soon enough.

O'Neal (wrist) departs vs. Mavericks

Jermaine O'Neal aggravated a left wrist injury while taking a first-half charge in Dallas.
Celtics center Jermaine O'Neal appeared to aggravate a longstanding left wrist injury while absorbing a charge late in the first half of Monday's game against the Dallas Mavericks and later departed the game.

O'Neal winched in pain after slamming hard to the ground after giving up his body on a drive by Dallas' Dominique Jones. Teammates tried to help O'Neal off the floor, but he quickly pulled his left hand back to prevent putting strain on that area as he got pulled to his feet.

O'Neal stayed in the game into the third quarter, but departed early in the frame. The team announced that he had a sprained left wrist and would not return.

O'Neal originally injured his left wrist while taking a charge in a preseason game against the Toronto Raptors at the start of the 2010 season. He aggravated it in the postseason against the New York Knicks last season, but elected to not pursue offseason surgery, feeling it might jeopardize his ability to get back on the court this season. O'Neal also appeared to tweak the injury earlier this season, but the aggravation Monday night was enough to prevent him from returning to the game.

Our three available bigs - O'Neal, Wilcox and Stiemsma combined for THREE points - on 1 for 6 shooting - in 50 minutes of play tonight. I didn't include JJJ in this grouping since he only weighs 221 pounds. 221 pounds does not make a big. Tall yes, big no, for JJJ.

But ONE made shot in FIFTY minutes of play from those three! Yes, this is the worst offensive Celtic team since '52-'53.

Actually, it is pretty offensive. Really offensive in fact.

I know JON got banged up tonight and left early after playing 19 minutes, but still, you'd think we could get more offense out of our bigs. That's where we're losing the vast majority of our battles this year.

What a treat to have watched Bird, Parish and McHale (and Walton for one glorious year) for more than a decade together.

When you are left to Mikael Pietrus covering Dirk - you know things are bad.

The All Star break cant come soon enough.
