Matty,

A few suggestions for anyone who might be planning a party:

• Hold it on a Saturday evening to make it as easy as possible for those who have to arrive on Saturday and leave on Sunday.

• Don't schedule it around a playoff game because it's virtually possible to plan in advance since playoff schedules aren't announced until just before the playoffs actually start. And one never knows how many rounds the Celtics will make.

• Decide how important socializing is versus watching a game together and having dinner together. At dinner, you mainly get to talk to people sitting next to you and across from you. It's very difficult to get a block of seats together for a game, and socializing during the game is even more difficult than at dinner. (Personally, I prefer to watch together on television.) A separate social period (before the game or the dinner) should be considered.

• Decent lodging is expensive in Boston. In terms of numbers, the most successful party we've had was at the Sports Depot in the Allston section of Boston. Hotels in that area were less expensive, and some offered shuttles to Boston so attendees could enjoy the city. And the Depot gave us a separate room for dining and watching a game on television.

• Many people have great difficulty anticipating whether they'll be able to attend. My experience has been that as few as one-third of those who make some form of commitment are able to follow through. The others have had great excuses, but that doesn't make it easier to deal with an irate restaurant manager, especially if the manager has set aside a separate room for us. I've learned to discount almost totally responses from people who think they can make it, and I've even considered the advisability of requesting non-refundable financial deposits from those who feel they'll attend. I know this may seem heavy-handed, but I can personally point to several hundred green reasons for this suggestion. On one occasion, only two actually attended out of 12-15 who committed, and I felt so guilty that they had counted on meeting other board members that I wound up personally buying them dinner at Pier Four.

• A committee is better than one individual in planning the party. Various committee members can be given different assignments (with deadlines) such as arranging a venue, researching accommodations, collecting deposits, planning optional events such as a ride on a duck boat, providing info on Boston for out-of-towners, etc.

• It probably goes without saying, but Boston weather in the spring can be very unpredictable. Even if snow's not involved, it can be freezing cold, limiting people's desire to stroll around a lot. In terms of outdoor fun in Boston, the best time we've had was during our summer get-together including dinner at the No Name Restaurant (on the waterfront) and a North End Italian festival.

I'm not trying to be heavy-handed here. But, since I won't be planning a party myself, I thought the least I could do was to offer a few suggestions based on experience.

All,

Here is the Red Claw schedule. We tried to get together to see a Red Claw game once before, but the team didn't have any Saturday night home games. The schedule looks better this time around:

http://www.nba.com/dleague/maine/schedule/

There are 5 home games on Saturday nights:

12/8, 12/22, 1/5, 1/19 and 2-2. One of the last two seems like the most likely option. The first three are either too soon or too close to the holidays, IMO.

Sam the dinner at NoName had a pretty big turnout and the NYC playoff party game at Prof Thoms had the biggest turnout of all 3. I agree with not knowing playoff schedules until right before series does make planning more challenging.

I certainly enjoyed the 2 Marcus and I managed to get to at the Sports Depot and the No Name dinner.

Putting a face to some names on here means a lot.

If something gets planned I'd consider. Always thought a gathering at Springfield at the HOF would be nice. Quite a bit to see there and I would think some nice resturants too.

Suites at the Garden are VERY expensive. I believe in the neighborhood of $350 per seat - with 20 people needed to reserve the space.

March 16 looks good for me as of now, only issue with that date is it is the Saturday Night before St Patricks Day in Boston = Amateur Hour for Drunk College kids. Most bars downtown will be full of unbearable prats (as they say in England), so not sure we want to subject ourselves to that.

St Pattys Day weekend wouldn't work for me, I like beats idea of HoF gathering in Springfield, sure hotels are alot cheaper, we could make a day walking around, then ideally do dinner at a sports bar and watch the C's. Any games on Saturday night on the 8th or 24th?

Gee, Matty, I feel so sorry for you—you old codger.

Gyso, I'm glad you printed the correct name of the Maine team. I believe I recently called them the "Lobsters" in some thread. Since I'm posting from San Francisco, I guess they're out-of-sight, out-of-mind.

Cow, were you at the first party at the Sports Depot? That was in the BDC days, and quite a few people showed up—even Mike (remember him?).

Beat,

The following year, we tried another party at the Sports Depot. Sandpd and I were the only two attendees. He is a good guy and was having major issues in taking care of his mother. He and I corresponded for a while, and I might even be able to find his email address. I'd like to find out how he's doing. Glad you mentioned him.

There were others at that party too. Worcester and Worcester's friend attended. Then there was the blonde girl from the main room who seemed to hang around me whenever I was on my way to and from the men's room. We even danced for a little while. I think she figured I was about to collapse at any moment and wanted to be handy so she could roll me.

Sounds great to me. Like most of us the further ahead I know the better. If a date can be found I'm up for whatever. We went to the HOF this past summer, I should post some pictures. It was enjoyable, but I don't know about area restaurants. Boston is always fun.

ROAD TRIP???

Well golly gee this may come as a shock but count me in.

I would suggest it being in Boston, maybe even the Sports Depot again on a night the Cs are playing. The HOF is a great place (and a much shorter ride for me) but the area can't compare with the City of Boston. As mentioned above March can be a bit tricky weather wise, April is a bit safer.

I watched a preseason game in Albany with Beat and Marcus, and last weekend visited Ros and her husband (turns out he is a distant cousin) for a game. Seeing many of you again, and meeting some of you for the first time will be a thrill.

Sure Sam I remember Mike, didn't he call himself MikeNP or something like that, I think he and worce had a history and knew each other somehow. Mike was ripping Docs coaching, we played the Hawks that night, he was complaining Doc wasn't letting Rondo do anything, he had some legit points. That year we had some offense, but defense was our calling card, that Bermuda Triangle defense was a sight to behold, KG played the best defense of any PF in the history of the game that year.
