Jazz Far Apart In Extension Discussions With Gordon Hayward
Oct 26, 2013 6:14 PM EDT
The Utah Jazz are far apart on contract extension talks with Gordon Hayward and do not have a baseline for an agreement, according to sources.
Hayward has an Oct. 31 deadline to reach a new deal. If an extension is not reached by then, Hayward will become a restricted free agent next offseason.
Two teams with ample salary-cap space have head coaches – Boston's Brad Stevens and Phoenix's Jeff Hornacek – who have history with Hayward and think highly of his talent.
Hayward, 23, averaged 14.1 points and 3.1 rebounds last season.

6'8", 207#, only 23 years old. Shoots 40% from 3. Good assist-to-turnover ratio for a SF. 81%FTs. Not a power defender.

MY NOTE: Gordon Hayward played for Stevens at Butler. He'll make $3.45M this year, his qualifying offer next year is for $4.7M and he obviously is thinking he's worth a lot more if his agent and the Jazz can't even agree on a baseline. How much more is he worth? To us? Stevens has already surrounded himself with ex-Butler people. Are ex-Butler players coming here too?

I don't think he is worth more than $5M just yet.

K_J - Hayward may not be worth the $ but it sure would be fun to look at his mom in the stands.

Hayward, Jazz Unable To Agree Upon Extension
Nov 01, 2013 12:44 AM EDT
Despite being in active negotiations up until the Thursday night deadline, Gordon Hayward and the Utah Jazz failed to close the gap on the framework of a contract extension and never discussed a five-year, maximum-level deal, league sources told RealGM.
Hayward’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, had maintained tireless, lively discussions with the Jazz’s front office, but the two sides couldn’t agree to a long-term deal. Hayward will become a restricted free agent next offseason.
For Hayward, his personal intrigue in the negotiations weighed heavily as a distraction, and the young forward now must regroup mentally and shift complete focus onto the basketball court.
“He didn’t enjoy the process, but he knows it’s part of the business,” Bartelstein said on Thursday night.
As the No. 9 overall draft pick in 2010, Hayward, 23, has infused the Jazz with a versatile playmaker, and the organization has made clear its intention to sign him to a new contract – whether it was before the deadline for his draft class or in free agency.
Yahoo! Sports first reported that discussions between Hayward and the Jazz had ended.
Armed with Brad Stevens and salary room, the Boston Celtics are seen league-wide as a team that will provide significant free-agent competition for Hayward.
Hayward averaged 14.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and three assists last season. He showed strides in his passing and rebounding during the preseason and scored 12 points with five assists and four rebounds in the Jazz’s season opening loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.
Hayward was drafted into the NBA after two standout seasons at Butler University.

MY NOTE: Between his relationship with Brad Stevens from Butler and the rumors that we have interest in him, I'm keeping up on this story. However, he will be a restricted free agent, not unrestricted, and like Avery Bradley and the Celtics the Jazz will have the opportunity to let the market set his price and match it. Also, who would we give up to get a 6'8" SF? That would give us Green, Wallace and Hayward at that position. That would be ridiculous. Sure, we will have the cap room to sign him straight up, without a sign-and-trade, next year but why would we? Think 3-team deal, Danny, think 3-team deal and get us someone we need.
