The Crap Shoot Known as the NBA Draft Empty The Crap Shoot Known as the NBA Draft

Unfortunately, this is another article that has graphs that are not easily cut-and-pasted, so you have to go out and look at it.

The question posed is "Which first-round picks didn't get their contract options exercised?".  This graph isn't perfect.  For example, there have been years in which I know the Lakers haven't had any 1st round picks, so obviously they didn't choose to not renew them.  There are a few teams, notably OKC, that have renewed almost all their 1st rounders (Sam Presti is great at drafting).  GSW is another.  Some teams have renewed just about all their 1st rounders, but still aren't winning, like NO and Charlotte.

The bottom line is that most clubs have bolluxed up their draft picks 3 or more times over the past 10 years, including us.  At least Danny has been able to turn some of those lemons into something.  Marcus Banks was traded to Minny with others for, among others, Wally.  Wally was a key component in the Ray Allen trade.  That's turning a lemon into a Cosmo. Gerald Green's NBA has been well chronicled, but he was a component in the Kevin Garnett trade.  JR Giddens pretty much went nowhere and Jujuan Johnson (who was the Big 10 DPOY, and therefore wasn't a complete out-of-the-blue selection) was traded, and then cut, to Houston in the Courtney Lee trade.  So, out of the 4 1st round picks we've had over the past 10 years that didn't get renewed, Danny only had one true bust, and JR Giddens was a #30 and final 1st round pick and not someone closer to even the front half of the round.
