Maybe NEXT year is the year to get that young Center.
there could be as many as FIVE true centers in the first roudn next year:
Jahil Okafor (Freshman-Duke) 6-11, 270
Karl Towns (Fresh- Kentucky) 7-0,248
both expected to be top10 players in the draft.
Willie Cauley-Stein (Ken) 7-0, 230
AJ Hammons (Purude) 7-0, 260
Both in the 10-15 range
Kaleb Tarczewski (Arizona) 7-0, 245
Dakari Johnson (ken) 7-0, 265
Frank Kaminski (Wisc) 7-0,234
all big men who if they come out could sneak into the first round.
2015 is looking like a big man draft at this point.

We still need a veteran. These guys may be more talented Colton Iversons, and I'm all in favor of an upgrade, but they're not going to be a starting center within 2 years.

I forgot about Porzingis the seven footer from europe who pulled out the draft this year also.
we might be in for more than 2 year rebuild, Bob.

Re: Maybe NEXT year is the year to get that young Center.
KDP,
The Celtics need a center who, in addition to being a force up front, will be a leader and even a mentor. That's practically the definition of "veteran."
The two most important positions on most teams are floor general on offense and center of defense. (Yes, there are exceptions, but they're in the distinct minority.) Many people are already handing the floor general job to Smart, who has not one minute of NBA experience. He seems the type who would be a quick learner, but experience takes time to develop.
Who’s the voice of experience at center on the Celtics? No one. Who’s likely to be the voice of experience at the position next season (if they don’t make a move this summer)? No one. If they don’t luck into a center in the next draft (which this year’s draft experience should have reaffirmed to all of us is a distinct possibility), that would be at least three years (and potentially more) of small ball and little experience at the center position. Planning based on what might happen in another year is a pretty sure recipe for ensuring that it will not happen.
A trade can make things happen quickly. People seem to see that kind of thinking as reflecting a “championship wish.” THAT IS NOT TRUE. What it reflects is a desire for the development of this team (however long it may take) to be enriched by the presence of the most important defensive component. Otherwise, they just won’t learn to play as productively as they could.

Maybe next year we can get one of them. In the meantime we need a center this year.

5 years is a long time to go without a legit center. Tack on the fact that it will take a few years for a drafted player to grow into that role. Make it closer to 7 or 8. Ouch.

This just may be our shopping list.
Although it would be preferable to find a veteran, the list of possibilities right now is nearly blank. Things change, and we may have some players with increasing trade value already, so who knows what might open up.
We're going to want a younger, long-term solution, that we can start developing soon, regardless. Next draft could be our opportunity.
For now maybe we're just looking for Arnie Risen until we can draft/deal for Bill Russell. Or Jahlil Okafor
