Jeb - Where is Sam Jones on your list? If you saw Cousy and Russ, you saw Sam.

hey steve3344
Bluffin with cousy and russ. Just know they got to be on there from studyin up. Never saw either one of em cept on youtube.
Clearly focused on the players I have seen but sliped those two on there.
I'm sure the guys that saw those sixties teams would put sam on there but I have not seen him play at all.

Jeb
lists are an enigma
one tends to "like" the ones he saw the most
So with that in mind my "favorite" C's to watch of my rememberable lifetime (65-present) are: (not including any current C's as their still making iimpressions)
1 Havlicek (MY all time favorite C, could find so many ways to beat you)
2 Cowens (inch for inch the toughest player I ever saw, whoever said white guys can't jump never saw him play)
3 Russ (simply a winner)
4 Bird (the 80's simply went way to fast)
5 McHale (so many moves )
6 White ( so smooth the Sam Jones of the next decade, even used the bank shot quite a bit like the master himself)
7 Archibald (as quick or quicker than Rondo with an outside shot)
8 Heinsohn (loved to watch his coaching moves and his loyalty to this team)
9 Nellie (loved the shot-put foul shooting)
10 Ainge (who could forget the Atlanta series "tree bites man")
Yeah perhaps there might be some changes in there as I ponder my memory banks a bit.
Although I remember Sam it was later in his career and Russ was really the only one from the 60's that made a distinct impression. Hondo I remember more from the 70's.

1. Larry Bird
2. Dave Cowens
3. John Havlicek
4. Kevin McHale
5. Bill Walton
6. Charlie Scott
7. Dennis Johnson
8. Robert Parish
9. JoJo White
10.Derek Smith (honestly)
These are my personal favorites, not in any way a ranking of who was best, and I leave off all the great 60s players because I didn't see them. As I look at my choices it is interesting there are no current Cs on it, but that is how I feel.

Re: our personal top ten celtics
Jeb,
And in thinking a bit more.............there is one very important name I left off, that if it were not for him none of those names I mentioned would be quite as memorable or remembered at all!
Lord Love you Johnny Most "really high above courtside" these days. His grainy voice could pierce thru the worst static and reception on that old Philco radio!! He made the game come to life even though the game hr called was sometimes a bit different than what was really going on. How the hell was I to know that looking at a radio dial!

Re: our personal top ten celtics
Most lists of this type purport to list the "all-time" best when the majority of the voters haven't been around for "all-time" That's why I usually detest such lists because of the obvious biases involved.
Positioning this list as a "personal" one makes the whole thing much fairer and less biased. It also avoids arguments because no one's claiming it involves anything but personal enjoyment; and, if someone says he enjoys something, no one else can reasonably dispute that fact.
I hope no one will mind if I lend the perspective of someone who has been around for what seems like "all-time"...in this case, a passionate fan since Red Auerbach and Bob Cousy joined the team in 1950.
Two caveats: (1) I'm not putting them in any order other than how they popped into my mind because I feel that just getting on this list is sufficient "ranking." (I tended to think chronologically, so you may notice a certain time sequence reflected in the various tiers of selections.) (2) I'm listing players I enjoyed watching rather than focusing on "best" players because I believe there are no "best" players, only "best" teams. However, I would be happy to match the sheer playing quality and pedigree of these guys with any Celtics (or one-team opponents) who ever lived:
• Bob Cousy
• Tom Heinsohn
• Bill Russell
• Sam Jones
• John Havlicek
• Bailey Howell
• Dave Cowens
• Larry Bird
• Robert Parish
• Kevin McHale
Actually, I'd prefer to list 12 in keeping with an NBA active roster size, in which case I'd add:
• Dennis Johnson
• Kevin Garnett
Actually, I'd really prefer to list 15 in keeping with the size of a full NBA roster, in which case I'd add:
• Tom Sanders
• Larry Siegfried
• Ray Allen
Actually, I'd really really prefer to list 20 because I'm older and have more insurance, in which case I'd add:
• K.C. Jones
• Frank Ramsey
• Don Nelson
• Paul Silas
• Tiny Archibald
Honorable mention, and a guy I expect to see much higher on the list over time:
Rajon Rondo
Sam

Re: our personal top ten celtics
thanks guys!
I noticed how much stronger barkley felt about the guys he had seen play.
He was all about bird and kevin. Some of the guys that saw the Russ teams play dont feel as strong about the 80's team in relation to the 60's teams. Fun stuff.

The Who are in London right now.
Not saying I don't like The Who a lot (hearing "Can't Explain" at 14 was one of those songs that made it clear what my priorities were going to be later in life) but there's no one on my list I'd take off for them.

Did not mean to call you out or anything, was just wondering why. I can totally see how Ray is a "class act" but I dunno what you would exclude Pierce/Garnett. But hey like you said. Your personal Celtics
