Boston Celtics rookie Terry Rozier has caught the eyes of the team's veterans with a "fantastic" training camp, according to president of basketball operations Danny Ainge.

Ainge: "Terry Rozier has looked fantastic in training camp and has really caught the eyes of the veterans... they’re all talking about him."

During an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday, Rozier's speed was obvious. The guard delivered one "wow" moment when he took off after a made basket to beat almost everyone down the court with a sweet dribbling move, though he missed a contested layup on the play. Rozier also knocked down a couple of 3-pointers for a promising showing.

While it's still early in training camp, Rozier made an immediate impression. After the first day of practice, Amir Johnson did not hesitate to single out Rozier as the young guy who stood out.

"They've all had moments," head coach Brad Stevens said of the rookies Tuesday. "And probably not as consistently as some of the guys that have been there, done that. But they've all had some real moments. And that's just part of it. They have a lot going on in their minds right now. You really do throw a lot at them in the first couple of days. It's just getting to that point where you're doing things almost unconsciously instead of thinking about everything. That takes awhile. That's not going to be solved in three days, three weeks, three months most of the time."

Is rookie Rozier playing his way up Celtics' depth chart?

A Sherrod wrote:WALTHAM, Mass. – Terry Rozier was pegged by most NBA experts as a late first-round pick in the draft who could potentially slip into the early part of the second round.

So when the Celtics selected him with the 16th overall pick in June, it was seen as an improbable landing spot considering the depth Boston has in its backcourt.

Training camp is less than a week old, but the 6-foot-2 Rozier has already turned heads with his end-to-end speed to not only race up and down the court, but potentially up the Celtics’ depth chart.

Rozier has been impressive in camp thus far and was among the players to stand out in Boston’s open practice for season ticket holders on Tuesday.

Playing for the GREEN team, Rozier saw the WHITE team take a 45-44 lead and immediately came down and drained a 3-pointer that put them back ahead 47-45.

Even on the floor full of veterans, Rozier didn’t hesitate to look for his shot.

It wasn’t just his scoring or defense that turned heads.

More than anything else, he looks comfortable and confident in games – something you seldom hear when talking about a rookie who wasn’t a top-10 pick.

“Just trying to learn the pace of the game here,” Rozier told CSNNE.com. “It’s definitely different than college. But I have a lot of veterans who have been helping me out. It’s been fun so far.”

Rozier was seen as a potential impact player defensively, something he is learning about first-hand from Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart who are among the better perimeter defenders in the NBA.

Joining them in an already crowded Celtics backcourt is Isaiah Thomas who came to Boston via trade from Phoenix in February and led the Celtics in scoring with 16.4 points per game (that number rises to 19.0 points per game if you just factor in the 21 games he played in Boston).

That’s a lot of proven talent that Rozier has to compete against, which is why the likelihood of him seeing action looks slim.

Then again, the odds of him being selected so high in June’s draft weren’t all that great, either.

Because of Boston’s backcourt depth, Rozier is expected to spend very little time on the floor this season with the Celtics. Instead, he’ll likely spend a few stints with Boston’s Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.

But there’s one problem.

Rozier apparently didn’t get that memo.

While he’s open to the idea of playing in the D-League, his focus remains on doing whatever he can to earn playing time with the Celtics this season.

“I’m competitive as hell,” he said. “In the locker room, it’s all love at the end of the day. But between the lines and practice, it’s fighting for minutes. This is our job; we all have families to feed. We all know what it is; we’re being competitive, that’s all.”

I am always reluctant to crown a rookie as being better than this guy or that guy.

Playing well in practice is one thing but playing an 82 game schedule is another. I think terry has the potential to be a good 3 pt shooter and he will probably be better than a John  wall but considering that  Wall shot 30% last year that is not much of a comparison.  Wall did hand out over 11 assist per game though. It is nice to see a PG run an offense.

Rose is another guy that shoots poorly from behind the arc 28%

My grandmother is faster than your grandmother!  But guess what?  They are both pretty damn slow.

Decision making may be the most difficult thing to project.  One measurement is to look at the assist to turnover ratio.  The sample size is too small to suggest that terry's decision making is anything other than Unknown.

Pre season hype stuff. Nice to hear about early success, but let's wait a while before giving this guy playing time. I am sure that he feels that he still has lots to learn and many guys to by pass to get minutes.

If he does earn minutes in the rotation, good for him and probably good for us as well.

I agree with Clyde and dboss.  The kid still has not laced up an NBA sneaker yet in a real game.  Let's see if he can stay in front of, or blow past, a legit NBA point guard before we anoint him as the heir apparent.

Nice to read, nice to hear, now show me.

It's not his fault he hasn't had a chance to show me, of course, the games are scheduled by others and not him but still...Conjecture is not proof.  On the 6th they play in Milan.  They're a pretty good team and then they play Real Madrid, another very good team.  Nice tests.  It will be interesting to see how Brad distributes minutes and what combinations he puts out there.  He is so freaking clever when it comes to that.  I suppose he has to be, he doesn't have players whose talent levels scream for heavy minutes, but that's also how he thinks.  His attention to detail slices players' skills up and then he mixes-and-matches them.
