Laker fans will have their hearts in their mouths til lottery day
http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-gm-mitch-kupchak-says-team-could-end-up-trading-draft-pick/2016/04/15/
We've all known this was possible, but article states the Lakers have a 44.2% chance of losing their (currently) #2 pick in the draft. Didn't know the exact pct.before but know it was pretty significant. That's a scary place to be when the ping pong balls start spinning around...
But if they lose it this year they'll still probably get a very good pick from it next year. It could cost them years of development though.

How those ping pong balls go are going to have some major ramifications to us.
Yesterday I did a draft simulation on nba realgm and I liked where we fell- #2. Denver had the first pick then philly had 3 and 4...
With a new regime in philly, a healthy embid, noel, the ability to trade Okafor and two of the top 4 picks and even more draft picks and nearly 60 million in cap space philly could position themselves to create one of the great turnarounds in nba history. It's not a comfortable thought. Thank god Danny is a celtic.

Who are Philly's new coach and GM? Even with all those assets, it's not easy creating a championship team. Not easy at all.

Brett Brown is still the coach. They didn't make a change there.worcester wrote:Who are Philly's new coach and GM? Even with all those assets, it's not easy creating a championship team. Not easy at all.
Bryan Colangelo is the GM with his dad Jerry Colangelo as part of the brain trust. Bryan Colangelo has been NBA executive of the year twice. Jerry is the architect of the revival of USA basketball. Having the credentials for the job isn't an issue.
Some people are of the opinion that Sam Hinkie's master plan actually wasn't such a bad plan and will bear fruit in the next few years to the point that the Sixers could become competitive again. Much depends on whether Joel Embiid can actually be a player, what they do to resolve the glut of overlapping big men, whether Dario Saric plays and is any good, and what they do with their glut of draft picks.
Hinkie's problems were that he didn't explain his plan or how the moves he made fit into that plan (to either the fans or ownership), made questionable use of his top picks, and created a culture of losing. The Colangelos may actually use the positive aspects of Hinkie's plan and turn it around. We'll see.

Blowing up a team to ensure a lousy record and a resulting high draft pick is certainly a sound way to rebuild. But it is not that easy because of unrestricted free agency which opens up the door for some of these young talented kids to move onto greener pastures. It would help the rebuilding process if unrestricted free agency were delayed by a couple years. This would give the signing team a couple more years to put together a winning team as a result of having some talented players that are closer to their top potential.

Teams can lock up 1st round picks for 5 years.
That seems like it's plenty since the average NBA career is 4.8 years.
I don't want to see a guy have to play for a team for 7 or 8 years if he doesn't want to.

The tanking philosophy is nothing more than a culture of losing. The 26ers will continue to be on my crap list until further notice.

5 years - which means that these 19 an 20 year olds can move onto greener pasturers when they are only 24 or 25. That doesn't give the team much time to build a team around these budding stars

Most players worth keeping stay with their team after the rookie contract is over.
LeBron played for 7 years before he went to Miami.
Durant has been with OKC for 9 years.
Curry, griffin, Dwight, and most other stars wind up staying with the team that drafted them past their rookie contracts. The league allows for financial incentives to stay with your team.
