The Celtics announced Kelly Olynyk underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Monday to treat the multiple subluxations that limited him in the second half of the season and the playoffs. He reportedly may be out until the beginning of the preseason.

WALTHAM -- The manbun will have plenty of time to comb his hair this summer, as the Celtics announced Kelly Olynyk had successful shoulder surgery Monday.

Olynyk has an arthroscopic procedure to repair damage caused by multiple subxluxations to his right shoulder throughout the season. Olynyk missed time during the second half of the season and suffered a recurrence of the injury in the first round playoffs series against the Atlanta Hawks.

“It wasn’t just a certain shoulder surgery. It wasn’t an easy decision. But Kelly’s shoulder was just – a lot of movement in his shoulder, slipping in and out. I think everybody finally concluded that there’s no guarantee it was going to get better without surgery and through a summer of rehab, there’s still risk of it slipping in and out of place. He chose and we chose collectively for him to get surgery and try to end it once and for all.” - Danny Ainge

CSNNE's A. Sherrod Blakely reported Sunday that surgery would come with an expected timetable of up to five months of recovery time. This would keep Olynyk out of the highly controversial Rio Summer Olympics this July and put him on track to return to action during the preseason.

Ainge confirmed this timetable when asked if he would be ready for preseason by Celticsblog at the post-lottery press conference.

"Usually this shoulder surgery is five months. I’ll let you do the math," Ainge said. "And you know, we won’t hold him [to that timeline]. Every player is different. Every situation is different. But that’s approximate."

When Olynyk spoke Sunday, he sounded like someone who was going in for surgery in the near future.

"The doctors are saying [surgery is] kind of inevitable," Olynyk told Blakely the day before he had the procedure.

"Probably make a decision sooner than later because the recovery is so long if you do get it. It's hard to give up, Olympics, but when you do look at it, yif you get hurt, it's even worse to give up next season. So it's a tough decision."

With the decision made, Olynyk will endure a long rehab that will leave him with a long layoff from shooting, which is a severe detriment to a player whose game is reliant on being a knockdown shooter.

It is good that this decision was finally made to fix this guy's shooting shoulder.

He will not be happy missing the Olympics, but we will be happy if he is back and ready to play at the beginning of the season.

Not really sure why this decision was not made much sooner, however, as he could be one month into his recovery if he had been operated on right after the last Atlanta game.
