BOSTON -- Asked about goals for the coming Boston Celtics season, Kelly Olynyk said he hasn't really thought much about the topic yet. He has been busy rehabilitating his right shoulder, which required surgery earlier this offseason.
Two-and-a-half months into the process, Olynyk believes his recovery is either "on track" or "maybe a little bit ahead" of schedule. He was initially expected to miss approximately five months, which would take him into the middle of October and could jeopardize his chances of appearing in any preseason games.
"It's going well," Olynyk said Wednesday afternoon at the Massachusetts State House, where the Celtics honored "Heroes Among Us" winners from this past season. "Rehab's gone well and range of motion's pretty much all back and it's definitely getting a lot stronger. It just needs to finally heal and you can't kind of just jump back because you might feel good but it's physically not healed, you haven't given it enough time to heal, so you just have to kind of let it heal while working on getting it stronger, getting in condition, getting movement back. It's been going really, really well. I've been on track and maybe a little bit ahead, so it's definitely going well."
"It's going to be at least five months (from the surgery, which was performed on May 16)," Olynyk said. "Once you get to that you kind of see how it feels and how you feel and kind of bring everyone together and see what the plan is from there. After five months it's sufficiently had its time, and obviously if you have more time it's gonna be better, but it's not necessary, you just need to look at what's going on."
Though Olynyk said he hasn't thought much about team goals for the coming season, he agreed with teammate Jae Crowder that it's time to make a playoff run. The Celtics added Al Horford to a team that won 48 games and hope they can end a two-year streak of first-round exits.
"I guess that is the next step: Moving on in the playoffs, when you've gotten there two years in a row and bounced in the first round," Olynyk said. "Now we gotta make something happen, make some noise (in the) postseason."

Re: Kelly Olynyk injury update: Boston Celtics big man 'maybe a little bit ahead' of schedule in shoulder rehab
This guy's right shoulder is the key for his contributions this year to the Cs, and also for the value of his next contract.
Since this is his right (shooting) shoulder he has to shoot well to be an effective NBA rotation player as his other skills without good shooting would probably leave him out of most teams rotations. He is very much a slow 7 foot wing type player without his shooting capabilities. His team defense is pretty good and he passes well, but does not rebound well or protect the rim well. Without his outside shot his drives to the hoop and passes off those drives may not be as available.
Might be a good idea to bring him along rather slowly even once pre-season camp starts in late September to give him almost another month of healing.
