The New York Knicks are acquiring Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose in a five-player trade, league sources told The Vertical.

The Bulls are also sending forward Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick to New York for center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant, sources said.

New York, which had been exploring the trade market for a high-end point guard, and Chicago had been deliberating for days on a trade centering on Rose and Lopez.

Rose, 27, leaves the Bulls after a decorated yet checkered run. He was the No. 1 overall pick out of Memphis in 2008 for his hometown franchise and had swift success. He was the league MVP in 2011 and a three-time All-Star, and helped carry the organization into contention. In 2010-11, Rose led the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals with a 62-20 record under Tom Thibodeau.

Rose has had multiple knee injuries since 2011, derailing a career that had once seemed Hall of Fame-bound.

Rose averaged 16.4 points, 4.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 66 games last season.

For the Knicks, they're free to pursue two more Bulls in free agency to fortify the frontcourt: Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol. Gasol has a strong relationship with Knicks president Phil Jackson, with whom Gasol won two titles as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. The arrival of Lopez – partnered with Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic – will likely end the tenures of Noah and Gasol in Chicago. Another possible free-agent target for the Knicks: center Dwight Howard.

everyone seems to be looking for real NBA players, not draft picks so far.

Chicago did VERY well if that ends up being the trade, IMO.

That's an Isiah Thomas type move.

Free up a roster position for Dwight Howard also....watch for it.

If Rose plays well, this is a good move for New York.
NY was not impressed by Grant as a point guard.
NY will probably look to sign Noah.
They also will have about $35m+ in cap space with Afflalo and Derrick Williams opting out.

Robin Lopez is underrated. I think he was a big part of Porzingis' rookie success, allowing KP to play PF.

If Toronto drafts Poeltl, don't be surprised if he ends up starting next to Valanciunas, even as a rookie.

Some of the best PFs are 7 footers who would get destroyed at center.

Lopez is underrated.
If you look at all aspects of their games, Robin is just as good as Brook in my opinion.

Grant has some talent, though probably not a whole lot of upside in general. He's a pretty talented shooter judging from his draft workouts last year, but I think he has poor balance, and his shot goes to shit in games when he has to shoot off balance.

Your "washed up... shell of a player" still scored 16 1/2 ppg and five assists on 43% shooting and at only 27 years old has a good chance at getting healthier in the next year or two. Look at Shawn Livingston as an example. And there are many others who overcame injuries early in their career to again become very productive - Brook Lopez for example. Pau Gasol looked like injuries were going to finish him three years ago and he's had some very solid years since. If I spent more time I could come up with a bunch more examples.

I am not sure that Rose was not worth Lopez in a trade, but I am glad that he did not end up in Boston.

Kind of sounds like the Knicks are putting far too many eggs in the one basket to me as this guy's injury history is just too long for me.

Can't imagine the Knicks knew about this and still traded for Rose:

Then again, I would be very surprised if they were stupid enough not to check under every rock before making the deal. Very rarely does a team bring in a player with this kind of thing unresolved.

At any rate, Derrick has some 'splainin' to do.

Nice deal for the Bulls.  Gamble for the Knicks.

Grant is probably as much the key as Lopez for Chicago.  Young athletic guard that's excellent with the pick and roll.  Pairing him with Butler is a great move, and further shows the Bulls commitment to keeping Butler.  Grant was the guard I had hoped we would select last year when we instead went with Rozier, which also looks like it will turn out fine.  Lopez probably means a certain exit for Noah and eases the looming loss of Gasol.

Rose could lead to a huge step up for the Knicks in terms of point guard play, attracting free agents, and ticket sales.  If, as Beat points out, Anthony ever gives him the ball.  The big factor, knees, I believe makes this a real long shot for the Knicks.
