Man, this guy just can't catch a break.

And Lebron just caught a big one with the Bulls significantly weakened.

Just how much more can Derrick Rose's knees take?
Jeff Zillgitt, USA TODAY Sports 12:33 a.m. EST February 25, 2015

Derrick Rose sat inside an empty Chicago Bulls practice facility two years ago and said, "I don't know what type of player I'm going to be. I just know that I'm going to be very good."

He had surgery in May of 2012 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee sustained in a playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers, and it was February 2013 when he told USA TODAY Sports that rehabbing and watching film would help him become "a better player and become more efficient with my game."

He was just 24 years old, and who didn't want to believe him? He had won the NBA's MVP award in 2010-11, averaging 25 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds and leading the Bulls to a 62-20 record and the Eastern Conference finals.

He was explosive, graceful and creative — a joy to watch. Born and raised in Chicago, he loves playing for the Bulls, and Bulls fans love watching him play. He didn't run from the pressure of playing for his hometown team. He embraced it, and it was a love affair expected to last a career.

Bulls' Derrick Rose has knee injury, needs surgery
That Adidas commercial where the city came to a halt when Rose was injured the first time? "That's the way the city really was," former Bulls teammate Kyle Korver said two years ago. "The whole city really was taken aback by it and really down because of who he is and because of how he plays the game and how hard he works and because of how he treats people. All those things wrapped into one make Derrick Rose who he is."

And Rose worked his way back, through grueling rehab. And then 10 games into the 2013-14 season, he sustained a torn meniscus in his right knee, ending his season.

He worked his way back again, playing for the U.S. national team at the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and in early January he told USA TODAY Sports, "I don't think I'll ever stop fighting, and if anything, I'm just going to keep getting better."

FOR THE WIN
LeBron James, John Wall, many more console Derrick Rose after knee injury
Now this: The Bulls sent out a news release late Tuesday evening saying Rose, just 26 years old, tore the meniscus in his right knee and needs surgery, possibly ending his 2014-15 season.

And now you have to wonder, will Derrick Rose ever get better? Will he ever be the same player he once was — when he should be entering the prime years of his career?

Just before the All-Star break, Rose had 30 points and seven assists in a win against the Cleveland Cavaliers and it re-affirmed what Rose said earlier in the season. That he would get better as the season progressed, that he would be the player he once was.

But now, another knee injury. Another season ended. How much more can one player take? It's sad and depressing because Rose loves basketball, and so many fans love watching Rose play basketball.

USA TODAY
Biggest current injuries around the NBA
In the past four seasons, Rose has played in just 95 games, and this is another unpleasant thought: How many more NBA games will Rose play?

Highly regarded NBA trainer Tim Grover, who has worked with Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant, tried to find optimism. He tweeted, "Before you panic about DRose it's not uncommon for athletes to return at a high level from multiple meniscus tears--if you do the work right."

Rose will do the right work. Rose and everyone close to him will tell you that, and Rose will have another comeback. In that January interview with USA TODAY Sports, Rose said, "I still have games I want to win. I still want to play in the NBA. I still want to win a championship. I've got a long career ahead. I'm only 26. I love this game too much."

That's probably true today as much as it was then.

FOR THE WIN
Away from New York, J.R. Smith is finally giving basketball his undivided attention
You don't want this to happen to anyone. Definitely not Rose. You don't want to ask the question: What if Derrick Rose had been healthy his entire career?

But maybe Rose's body isn't made for this game. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. And that's the cruel, disheartening way it works sometimes, even when we want to believe and hope otherwise.

First thing I thought was another ESPN "30-for-30" on unrealized potential. This just blows....
