I have no problem with this decision and mostly because Olynyk's surgery was on his right (shooting) shoulder. I, too, would want him to at least prove that he is healthy once again before signing him for anything that is "long term" because if the shoulder fails to respond his value is much less.
This young guy really does need to improve again this season for both the team and for himself. He has made very nice strides forward since being drafted, but this may now be his most important season. Besides showing that his shoulder is 100% and that he still can shoot, he really needs to continue to get better at other parts of his game. He certainly is not a 7 footer who bangs hard around the hoop, but he does many other things quite well.
Of course, getting through this season without a significant injury will help immensely.

I like his ability to make outside shots.
Otherwise he still appears to be soft. DA maintains cap flexibility next year. If KO shows improvement and does not miss a lot of games he may get new contract. Otherwise he is gone and one of the Euros gets his spot.

Rumor: Celtics will not extend Kelly Olynyk, let him be restricted free agent next summer
That is the actual title of the article. Many rumors, as we have witnessed this summer, turn out to be just some blogger's opinion.
Not extending him this summer has nothing to do with his shoulder or his 43 games missed over 3 seasons, nor does it have anything to do with his play in general.
The bottom line is . . . the bottom line. It is all about preserving cap space for one more year in order to sign another big fish.
After next summer, he and many other current Celtics players will get their big payday that will take the team over the cap. Depending on the final makeup of the team going into training camp 2017, the team should be over the cap and possibly flirting with the tax limit. Unless something happens later this summer (doubtful) or later at the trade deadline, I expect that Danny will go all in next summer. The waiting game will finally be over.

right on the money as usual gyso.
we can always match ant deal Kelly may get next season as a RFA anyway.
probably best to let the market, even an inflated one set his salary.

Another thought.
KO contract could be part of a trade.
