Dragic for Rubio trade rumor?
What do you guys think of this?

Rubio, Adriean Payne and a '17 2nd rd pick from the Wolves to the Heat for Dragic?
I think it would be a good deal for the baby Wolves. Rubio and Dunn are too similar as defense/pass first PG's with questionable outside shots. Rubio turns 26 in just 2 weeks and is in his prime. He likely would have a hard time seeing his mins or starting position given to Dunn these next 2 seasons, but the #4 pick in the 2018 draft shouldn't be expected to stay on the bench for long (although #6 pick Smart may be a sub for the first 3 years of his career!).
In Dunn, Dragic and LaVine the Wolves will have 3 guys who can handle the ball, same as they do now, but will add a needed veteran to a young team and a much better 3 point shooter than Rubio, even if their career #'s of .355 to .318 aren't too far apart, one is truly a very good shooter and the other a below average one.
The Heat would rebuild around a cheaper/younger pure PG in Rubio, Winslow at SF and Whiteside at C. Get a top 7 draft pick and hope to have some FA cash after Bosh is taken off the books to get that 5th starter/needed star power.

Don't the Celtics own the Timberwolves 2017 2nd rd pick?

Wolves just drafted Dunn, not sure they need an over-paid, long-term contract guy like Dragic. Maybe if Dragic was on a cheaper or shorter contract it might make sense.

Dragic makes 15.9-17-18.1 million over the next 3 years. Then he has a player option at 19.2m he may or may not opt into for his age 33 season.
Rubio makes 13.4-14.1-14.8 the next 3 years. Payne makes 2 million with a 3.1m option for 2017-18 that any team he is playing for would almost certainly pick up. So it is a commitment of about 2 million more a year for the Wolves, who are currently 26th in the league in salary and 8-9 million under the cap. Money will not factor into this at all from the Wolves standpoint unless it is thinking that in 3 years there is no way they can pay Rubio 4/94 or 5/110 while they could afford to re-sign all their young guys AND give Dragic a 3/42 or 4/50 type deal for his age 33 and beyond seasons.
The factor is the fit for both teams. Rubio has a game very similar to Dunn. Neither would play off the ball well if paired with the other in the backcourt. Considering he is in his prime and will be looking for that big Dragic like deal at age 28-29 in 2019, Rubio will likely not take well to coming off the bench behind Dunn the last 2 years of his deal. Dunn would likely not progress the way a #4 pick should if he is forced into a 16-20 minute a game role behind Rubio for 2-3 years.
Dragic got his big payday. He was paid to be on a team with Wade, Deng, Winslow, Bosh and Whiteside that could have made noise in the east. Now the Heat are going to rebuild. They could use a 26 yr old pure PG and a bruising 24 year old backup PF for that rebuild more than they can use a 30 yr old veteran like Dragic who did not stay there to be on a lotto club with no Wade/Bosh.
Dragic can play off the ball alongside Dunn, share ball-handling duties alongside fellow combo-guard Zach LaVine, or be the primary ball-handler when Mohammad is playing SG. This is due to his shooting and shot creation abilities. He is also a veteran and Thibbs would want that on a young team that hopes to squeak into the playoffs. When he is next up for his next contract at 32-33 it would most likely be in a 3rd guard/6th man type role wherever he goes, so mentoring Dunn for 1 year then backing him and LaVine up from 2017-2019 and staying fresh for the playoffs would likely not bother him very much.

Re: Dragic for Rubio trade rumor?
Ricky Rubio | G | Timberwolves
We shouldn't make an easy assumption that Rubio won't be a part of the long-term core of the Timberwolves. He's still only 25 years old, and in terms of two-way impact, he's a borderline elite player. And new Minnesota coach/executive Tom Thibodeau values defense more than most.Still, it's Rubio's weakness as a shooter that marks him as a sell-high candidate. The Wolves project to take and make fewer 3s than any other team, and given the youth of the roster, it's not a short-term problem. Turning the point guard spot over to rookie Kris Dunn -- when he's ready -- would give Thibodeau the option of flipping Rubio in exchange for high-quality shooting.
You could see Rubio fitting with Dallas, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Sacramento and San Antonio, among others. -- Bradford Doolittle
