How many games will the Boston Celtics win in the 2016-2017 regular season?
The Celtics 2016-2017 regular season win total poll
Now that the pre-season is over, we have seen what our actual team will look like against other NBA teams. We have gone against the 76ers, Hornets, the Nets and the Knicks, not exactly the meat of the NBA. With that said, we did look pretty good out there when we did have our rotational players on the floor. In many of the pre-season games, Brad took the opportunity to mix and match non starters and end of the bench players in the second half of the games in order to see what rose to the top.
We've had a few threads throughout the summer where some of you offered your predictions or guesses as to how many regular season games the Celtics would win this year. At the time, our final roster was up in the air, with possible trades and potential free agent signings flying out of the woodwork. Now our roster is somewhat settled, with the inconsequential end of the bench 14th or 15th roster spots still left to be decided upon. I have tried to find those threads (admittedly I did not try too hard ) in order to link them to this thread so that we could have all our predictions in one place. If anyone can find them, please bring them to our attention so that we can link them here.
Our predictions last year, on average, were pretty much on the dot, with many clustered around the final result. Lets see how we do this season.
Anyway, without further ado, How many games will the Boston Celtics win in the 2016-2017 regular season? Make your choice in the poll and let us know of your ideas in a post.
Thank you for participating,
gyso
PS: I'll leave this up as a sticky for a couple of weeks, or until we have the majority of entries made.

I'm going with 53, hope I'm wrong and it is much higher. I really like this team, though am thinking our three point shooting still won't be good enough to get us higher into the fifties. Also while I now like Brown as the third pick, I'm skeptical he will have a big impact in his first year.

Always happy for the chance to make predictions.
Always happiest to do so with no money riding on the outcome.
Couldn't even hold off until after game one to participate.
No willpower.
51 wins.

Re: The Celtics 2016-2017 regular season win total poll
We are starting this season without:
One of our better outside shooters due to injury, Kelly Olynyk.
Our best in-your-face basketball players due to injury, Marcus Smart.
Our best super-sub from last year, Evan Turner. He was 4th in total points, 3rd in total rebounds, 2nd in total assists, 4th in minutes played.
Our best rebounder from last year, Jared Sullinger. He was also 5th in total points, 5th in minutes played, 3rd in total assists (2 more than Smart).
Our biggest conundrum, when to play David Lee.
We are starting this season with:
One of the biggest free agent additions of the summer, Al Horford. For Atlanta: 2nd in total points, minutes and rebounds. 4th in total assists. Played all 82 games.
The third pick in the last draft, Jalen Brown.
A spark plug off the bench that has gotten his confidence, Terry Rozier.
A new scorer off the bench, Gerald Green.
A very deep team that could help us get though the beginning of the season without KO and Smart.
That seems like we are starting the season without a lot that helped get us to 48 wins. Losing Olynyk and Smart early on doesn't help start off the new season with a bang, both could be a month before they are at 100%. Other than the addition of Horford, there aren't a lot of known knowns going into the new season. Jalen Brown could get rookie of the year or he could be the second coming of Jeff Green. Marcus Smart could find his shot and become an all-star quality player or he could keep shooting 3s at a league worst percentage. Green and Rozier could help fill in the best bench in the league or they could be fool's gold.
I don't think we take a huge leap in the win department. We may not even overtake Toronto for the lead in the Atlantic Division, but it will be close. Our biggest plus is the fact that three of the teams that we play the most are the 76ers, the Nets and the Knicks. That certainly will help our win total. I think we will gain maybe 5-6 more wins. I'll take the bigger number, 6.
54 wins.

Win loss record predictions
I'm going with 60 regular season wins...
(Real reason for this thread is because a freind would be chiming away a few seconds after anyone would post such a thread in the past with the words "see me in april" and I really miss the ol sonofabitch- and his response. It f'ING sucks not having him around to see a new season begin.)
What say ye?

Agree - it sucks. But it's life and we have to live it.
My bet is 54.

Re: The Celtics 2016-2017 regular season win total poll
I also say 56. It is what I said from the moment they got Horford.
2015 - 40 wins/7 sweed
2016 - 48 wins/5 seed
2017 - 56 wins/2 seed
2018 - 64 wins/1 seed
They add 8 wins per year. Probably lose to the Cavs in the ECF this year.
My hope is they hit a home run this offseason and sign a top 3 FA (Haywood or Griffin) and get a top 3 pick (a healthy Harry Giles). But even if they end up with a pick in the 5-8 range and a guy like Ivan Rabb and just a top 8-12 FA like JJ Redick, I think they'll make a huge jump next year. The kind that gets them the 1 seed and past Cleveland.

Hey guys,
There is already a thread for this, including a poll, up above. It's a sticky.
I guess that I can merge this thread so that your posts remain. Please remember to vote in the poll.

I polled at 56 and was shocked to be the highest...that was before reading the thread though.
we should be a scary team this team for most teams (defensively).

Ram,
I was going to add the 8 additional wins to last year's total and go with 56, but then I remembered a 15 win increase preceded the 8 win increase. That made me think that it will be more of a flattening curve and not so much of a straight line.
That doesn't mean that I don't hope that you are right in your guess.

Re: The Celtics 2016-2017 regular season win total poll
Okay, the old lady has arrived with her predictions!!!
1 The Boston Celtics will win 55 games this year
2. Al Horford will prove to be the best pickup since.....KG?
(went out on a limb there huh?)
3. Jaylen Brown will be rookie of the year!
I guess I am a little pumped for the start of the season.
Matty:
I am with you buddy, it is a sad beginning to another season without the "Voice of Reason" here. God, he would have loved this team. Jeb,my friend, I miss you all the time. Time marches on though, and all of the members of this site have continued exactly the way Sam would have wanted.
Thanks to all who keep it going, you are all great.

54 wins.
Last year's team had lengthy injuries to Crowder, Olynyk and Smart. Sullinger and Amir slowly faded as one put weight back on and one had ankles that became more and more sore.
Sounds like you think this team is in a similar position as far as challenges faced to start the season as last year's team, therefore 54 wins makes sense. That was a 51-53 win team a year ago w/o the nagging injuries and difficulty finding a rotation early and having everyone on the court and fresh late.
There may be nagging injury issues again, but I think the depth is better prepared to cover them, there won't be issues settling on a 10-11 man rotation (maybe just btwn Brown & Green) and Horford will prove so much better than Sully (rebs per minute aside) that he'll be worth 3-4 wins by himself while Rozier, Green and Brown will equal what Turner brought.

Wins
I put in a conservative 50. We look better but the conference got better. Will be close for a division winner the Raptors have talent that will be as tough as the Cav's.

I don't see where Toronto improved themselves this year. they lost Biyombo and Scola and replaced them with Poitl and Sullinger.
looks like a wash AT BEST to me.
now Carroll should certainly play more than last year, but overall, I don't see them as improved over last year.

A cautious 54 wins. Need to get more control on rebounding on both ends and protecting the 3 pt shot.
We are still lacking 2 more players of substance.

I think BobH was looking for a bump on this during today's Game On thread.
(Of course before I bumped had to make sure I wasn't embarrassing myself.)

Excellent! Thanks. I was thinking of this thread and was going to start looking for it after the regular season was over, but this is good now with 1 left.
