The Answer vs Mighty Mouse
Heard this on the CLNS podcast and thought I'd research and post this for forum discussion:
Other than rebounds (NOT a key stat for a small point guard) and steals IT, on a per minute basis, is having a better season than the season that defined Iverson's career and made him a first-round lock for the HOF (he was going there anyway, but when you win the league MVP award and carry your team on your back to the Championship round you're in, period). More points/minute on fewer fgas, more ftas and a much better assist and assist-to-turnover ratio.
/game.........................................mpg.....ppg.....fga.....fg%.....3pt fg%.....ftas.....ft%..........rebs.....asts.....TO.....Ast/TO..........stls
Allen Iverson---------------------------42------31.1----25.5---42%----32%-------10.1----81.4%-----3.8------4.6-----3.3-----(1.39:1)-----2.5
Isaiah Thomas--------------------------33-----26.1----18.4---43%----33.6%-------9.1----87.6%-----2.6------6.3-----2.4-----(2.63:1)------.8

Iverson was a super talent but a lot of his numbers are biased because of the high number of minutes he played - which you pointed out by basing the stats on a per minutes basis rather than per game. I think that Thomas is a vastly under-rated offensive player which his high ranking efg% helps to illustrate. Certainly not stats like Iverson's that are inflated by high volume gunning.
Check out the below stat chart for a comparison of a few guards who met the standards as listed in the heading. The chart is sorted based on efg% but can be sorted by any desired heading by simply clicking onto any desired heading.

Swish,
Interesting enough, if you sort that list by many other key variables, excepting 3pt %, D Wade comes out as pretty much the top guard in recent memory. He hits first or second in a convincing number of categories. Not a fan favorite here, but statistically among the top dogs if not the alpha canine. If he could shoot the 3 he would have been in the 'all-time' conversation.
Regards
