Source: Cousins intends to sign massive extension with Kings
CSNNE
By James Ham January 10, 2017 9:23 PM
SACRAMENTO -- DeMarcus Cousins is about to get paid. A published report over the weekend had the Sacramento Kings preparing a mega extension offer to the 26-year-old big.
CSN California has confirmed through a league source that the two sides have tossed around numbers and that barring a late change in direction by either side, Cousins intends to sign a massive, max-money extension, estimated at roughly $207 million during the offseason that will keep the big man in a Kings uniform long-term.
The two-time All-Star center signed a four-year max money deal in September of 2013 that takes him through the 2017-18 season. Under the new CBA, Cousins is in line for the league’s designated player exception, which allows Sacramento to give their franchise cornerstone an additional five-years on top of his current deal, keeping him in a Kings uniform 2022-23 season.
As an eligible designated player, Cousins can take home up to 35 percent of the team’s salary cap, which is set at roughly $102 million for next season.
The two sides have to wait until after July 1, 2017 to consummate the extension and there are still parameters to the deal that need to be worked out.
Cousins is posting career numbers in his seventh season in the league, averaging 28.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 34.6 minutes per game.

Does not matter as i am sure someone will still find the time to speculate about us making a trade for Cousins

It seems that the organization that employs him thinks more highly of him than the demeanor police.

This is why GMs get paid big bucks I guess, as Cousins is a serious enigma.
Players of his size, strength and skill set come around very rarely. So Sacramento cant really 'let him go'. At the same time, he is a pain in the ass and hasnt proven to make anyone around him better and the Kings are stuck in neutral, for a decade or more.

The guys on the Sacto roster are who they are. Several off them have played for multiple teams. Only god could make them better, imo

So then, how could you as the owner keep Vlade Divac ? He is paying Rudy Gay and Aaron Affalo 13 million a year? Koufos, Temple and Tolliver 8 million?
With or without Cousins, clearly it isnt working. I dont really care either way - but I never get teams who are horrible resigning big players, vs trading them and starting the rebuild with a ton of young players and future assets.

Re: Source: Cousins intends to sign massive extension with Kings
Cousins is not the only reason why Sacremento has been a failure for so long. He is a superb player but could be one of many guys who just do not "make teammates better". As I see it the point guard on any team is the most likely guy to "make teammates better" since this guy handles the ball all the time.
He has been surely been frustrated there and has acted out far too often, but he would almost be stupid not to accept their reported offer of $205 M. Once he signs his new contract he will take that salary with him if traded in the future.

dboss,
So true!
We all knew there was no chance of getting him here, but it has been a popular topic. We'll have to switch to Jimmy Butler or Anthony Davis I suppose. Somewhere there will be an article suggesting Durant is trying to get free and come here...I can almost guarantee it!
$200mil for four year's work. Not bad if you can get it. Don't know about you, but that's a bit more than I make!

Why do we put any trust at all in the endless trade rumors that circulate each and every year - entertainment value only, based for the most part on pure speculation and wishful thinking.

Good questions. Not defending Divac. All I`m saying is that the team that sees him play every day is opening up the vault. Maybe they know him better than message board critics. Then again , maybe not. I don`t buy the " makes everybody better" argument. He scores , rebounds , handles the ball and passes it pretty well. What`s he supposed to do, make their shots for them. Robert Parish`s Warrior teams sucked and he was not as highly regarded as Joe Barry Carroll. Did he make Bird and McHale better or did playing with them inspire him and make his job easier? He`s an elite center. Celts aren`t getting him , which is fine, but his rebounding alone , in my opinion, would have made them exponentially better. So would Whiteside.

For that kind of money, he needs to grow up, stop being a immature jerk and become a team leader.
I mostly blame the team. They allowed him to act like a petulant child and never gave him a consistent nucleus around him. In the end, I couldn't care less what happens to him or the Kings. Another Carmello Anthony destined to fill stat sheets, and win nothing.

I`d take his 28 points, 10 rebounds , block and a half, 38% from 3 and 73% free throw shooting, but we`re never going to agree on him and that`s cool.

Just remember folks the numbers Wilt Chamberlain put up but could never make his teammates better. Besides Wilt also had some attitude problems with both coaches and teammates alike...........Cousins in Wilt X 100
No thanks!

He sure did make his team better - and that's the bottom line.

My comments came directly from Bill Russell and Red Auerbach in their respective books. A better team through his individual efforts.............yes......a better team to win championships ........ no, because the term TEAM implies more then one, which both gentlemen cited above both agree he did not.

Yes, the Celtics were the better TEAM - certainly due in large part to the fact that they were led by as many as 8 HALL OF FAMERS on their roster - a luxury that Wilt never came close to enjoying. And the fact that the Lakers also, couldn't beat the Celts during the Russell years should not cast any doubt about the abilities of Baylor and West who were simply out gunned by the wealth of talent that Red had at his disposal.

if you read Bill Simmons Big Book on Basketball, which covers just about everything, teams, individuals, awards, top teams and players of all time and is a great read, he goes into detail how many of Wilts teams were fully loaded with all star caliber players and Wilt always came up small in the clutch over and over, always wanted to keep his streak of never fouling out of a game intact and was never aggressive enough when he needed to be.

I think you guys have all got it wrong.
Wilt was simply worn out by the 4th Q of most games, that's why he and his teams seemed to fade in the clutch. Because of the record number of women he slept with, he was usually exhausted by the end of the 3rd!

Re: Source: Cousins intends to sign massive extension with Kings
he will never win, i do not care how much money they give him (and that contract is ridiculous). You would think after what happened to Brooklyn where they paid all that money out and got nothing in return, teams would learn a little lesson.
No matter how good he is, he will not win there. The only team I see him ending up with possibly is the Lakers. they have always done crazy things to get a good big man
