Warriors Waive Anderson Varejao To Sign Briante Weber To 10-Day Deal
FEB 3, 2017 3:31 PM
The Golden State Warriors have waived Anderson Varejao to sign Briante Weber to a 10-day ontract.
Golden State made the move to bring in another athletic, versatile guard.
Weber, 24, was the NBA Development League’s Player of the Month for January, averaging 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds and 3.6 steals for Sioux Falls.
Varejao has played sparingly for the Warriors after joining the team last season.

MY NOTE: GSW waives a big to sign another guard. They are now carrying Zaza Pachulia, Javale McGee and rookie Damien Jones (who has played a grand total of 21 minutes in just 3 games so far this season) as centers. Demetrius Jackson has played 17 minutes for the Celtics this year, just to put #30 pick Jones' minutes in perspective. So, a team that is already not that big, certainly not that beefy, just got smaller.
And they are the best team in the league. This is the NBA, like it or not.

Re: GSW Waives Anderson Varajao
Bob,
You've got it. The modern NBA. If you can shoot it like GSW and play enough D to keep it from being a complete track meet, you don't need to be very big.
It would be interesting to bring a big frontcourt into competition, there's still something to be said for it, but there's always the argument that if another team is nailing it from around the arc and beyond... The 7 foot shot blocker. Yesterdays fashion?
Regards

I know nothing about this Weber guy, but this decision may come back to haunt the Warriors unless Varejao is just completely done.
They may just need an experienced big man down the road in the playoffs as their reliance on the 3 pointers may come up short on some very important night.

NYCelt,
Track meets aren't the problem. Small, fast teams like GSW like track meets. Not only do they run well but if the defense runs back and packs the paint in transition defense they have the shooters to make them pay. It's the paint punishment from the BIG teams they have to get past and they do that with swarming. It reminds me a bit of Jurassic Park. The T-Rex was immensely bigger and stronger than the velociraptors but the velociraptors were climbing all over the T-Rex and driving him crazy. One-on-one they were dead meat but operating as a pack? Deadly. That's the new NBA. Bigs that can open the floor by hitting from 3 on offense and quick enough to provide help defense when the ball gets down low. The old days of Perk handling Howard by himself are obsolete now. Back then it was an asset because then we didn't leave a shooter open with a double-team, which SVG was hoping would happen. Now, you hit Howard with a double and he kicks it out, but the defenders are SO much quicker now they can still rotate, recover and close out on the shooters. And this is just in the last 5-10 years.
