Abdel Nader Hoping To Make Celtics' 17-18 Roster After Strong D-League Season
MAR 5, 2017 12:39 PM
Abdel Nader is one of the top prospects of the D-League, averaging 22.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Maine Red Claws.
Nader hopes to receive a legitimate shot at making the Boston Celtics' roster for the 17-18 season. Nader sought that chance this season but agreed to a deal where he would remain in the D-League with the Red Claws. Nader was the 58th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft out of Iowa State.
“It’s just a testament to all the hard work I put in in the offseason,” Nader said. “On a daily basis you’ve got to keep proving people wrong. I’ve got to keep developing, keep getting better. Everybody [in the D-League] is bigger and stronger than college. You’re going against men, you know? Everybody is a pro. There’s a lot more spacing [than in college], so you have a lot more freedom to handle the ball and get into the paint.”
Forwards James Young, Gerald Green, and Jonas Jerebko will be free agents this summer, opening the door for Nader to make a bid at a roster spot.
“I think I put myself in a position [to make the roster],” he said. “I think I have a great chance. I have proven myself and I’m going to continue to do so. It’s my time, that’s how I feel right now.”
Nader will likely get an invitation to training camp, along with 2016 first-round picks Guerschon Yabusele and Ante Zizic, who are flourishing overseas.
“They’re very hands-on with me and my development in Maine,” Nader said of Celtics management. “They send front-office guys all the time. Danny [Ainge] comes and watches games in Maine. It’s great knowing those guys have my back, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity given to me.”
bob
MY NOTE: The D-League games highlight film I've watched makes Nader look very impressive. He also looked very good in summer league last year. On the other hand, James Young and Jordan Mickey both looked amazing in Maine too. Still, he should get a shot regardless of how he does in next year's summer league by virtue of what he has shown all year this year game-after-game with the Red Claws.

I've had my eyes on him all year - could be that he will turn out to be the elite player that Danny is hoping will lead the Celts next year. There's one swig left in the bottle then its time to stumble off to bed - if I can find it.

Nader definitely deserves a shot at a roster spot next season although a good year in the D League does not guarantee the spot or any minutes if he gets a spot.
His drafted position will always be against him, but Thomas has made it from a similar draft spot so Nader has hope.
He may be right now ahead of Young (even with some mid to late season improvements), Mickey and Jackson on the Cs current roster.
He will need to impress again in summer league and then again still in pre season camp.

It's rare that a team gets a chance to add a player like Nader who is excelling at his level of professional basketball. Both Yabusele and Zizic will be coming in with similar success. All three will be confident and playing with a chip on their shoulder for being overlooked this year. Nader is very aggressive, like IT and Smart. But he is a better offensive player then D-elite Marcus. Summer league starts in 4 months. It should be a good showcase of Boston's bench next season.

Yabu was picked 16th. I would not consider that as being overlooked. Zizic was also a 1st rounder. Their situations are very unique.
As I have mentioned before, I cannot recall a situation in the history of the NBA where two first round draft picks played overseas. They will have an opportunity at some point but the process may be longer than normal given the sheer volume of assets that DA has at his disposal.
I do not see both Nadar and Yabu making the active roster because they appear to replicate one another. However, if Amir, KO, Jonas, Young, Mickey, Green and Jackson are not retained, I can see all three of their stashes migrating to a roster position.
This is a real puzzle that includes multiple pieces that at a quick glance appear to fit but as we know only one piece fits perfectly into a puzzle.

Re: Abdel Nader Hoping To Make Celtics' 17-18 Roster After Strong D-League Season
dboss,
I agree that all the pieces may not fit a particular puzzle but if the piece is there you just have to give it a try. That's why I complain about them not being given a shot during preseason. I think that given the current roster for next season you could well see Abdel, Ante, and Guerschon make the team. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Amir, Jonas, Mickey, Zeller, Green and Young didn't return depending upon what kind of cap space Danny thinks he needs.
I think they will have a chip because they weren't invited to camp. At least I hope so. Not using it in a bad sense but just as motivation. They all wanted a shot last year. It's all good. They were probably both taken about 15 positions before expected.
As far as assets are concerned, these are two of Danny's best. They aren't a future draft pick they are the now and are ready to contribute. Zizic and Yabusele fill the glaring needs we have on paper. Nader improves the package and would be the one out if they all don't make it. For some reason I'm thinking Danny will take Ball when all is said and done. He makes a better fit I think. That's a lot of rookies on the roster but two of them are already pros.
I don't see Yabusele and Nader as playing the same position at all. But the times they are a changing.

All 3 of them deserve a chance to play summer league and get invited to training camp. While it is possible that all 3 make the team I doubt it will happen and I remain a skeptic until I see them play.
Why do you think the Celtics would draft Ball over Fultz?

They are both considered to be the top of the draft and are both considered to be franchise type players. Fultz is 6'4" and is considered uber athletic but is coming in from a losing team.He is a shoot first pg who can take a game over with his scoring ability. Ball is 6'7" and has a pass first game which I prefer. His size gives him a definite advantage at his position. He has a more NBA ready body and game and comes from a winning team. Those are things Danny values as shown last year. I don't think we go wrong either way. Fultz is the sexy pick because of his scoring but Ball has the better overall game, body, and maturity. He at least seems more mature than his Dad. lol He's a bright kid, will fit right in with Brown and Co.

Boston Celtics Stash Update: Abdel Nader
by Michael DePrisco
Checking in on how D-League stash prospect Abdel Nader has played in the last two months
The Boston Celtics selected Abdel Nader with the 58th pick in the 2016 NBA draft. Nader was not expected to make a huge impact as a late second round pick, but showed flashes in the summer league of being a potential rotation player.
Hardwood Houdini’s Liam O’Brien checked in on Nader in January, so this will be an update based on the last two months of action the Iowa State graduate has seen. Nader has consistently been the Maine Red Claws’ best player this season, which is a promising sign for Celtics fans enjoying the rewards of their beautiful rebuild.
In the month of January, Nader had a good stretch of basketball. He averaged 24.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, while shooting 44.4% from three. This is an impressive line from any player in the D-League, and it would be a tough challenge to keep up that level of play in February and March.
In February, Nader did what he has done all year for the Red Claws. He played consistently at a high level. He averaged 20.8 points, 6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists, while shooting 38.8 percent from three.
Nader has the stats to suggest that he is a good scorer and passer, and it really shows when you watch him play. Maine uses Nader as the primary ball handler, which is a tough role for a 6’6″ wing. But the former Cyclone does a good job with the responsibility, which should help him at the next level. Take a look at some highlights that show his all around skills.
March has been a rough month for Nader, but he has still boasted strong numbers even though he hasn’t shot the ball well. He’s averaged 19.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 27% from three.
As you can see in the video, Nader can really take it to the basket. That’s how he made his mark in the summer league, and it’s how he can contribute in the NBA if given the chance. He has the shooting ability that requires defenders to close out hard, and has the passing skills to find open teammates if the defense collapses.
Nader could find a spot on the Celtics roster next season as a player that could provide some wing depth. After Jae Crowder and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics basically have nothing at the small forward position. Nader could fill a limited role with the Celtics, but provide useful depth if injuries occur like they did this season.
As the D-League season comes to a close, and the summer league starts up again, keep an eye on Nader. He could make a case for a roster spot once players like James Young and Gerald Green likely depart.

Re: Abdel Nader Hoping To Make Celtics' 17-18 Roster After Strong D-League Season
First, Bob great post as usual! Does it not get boring being so great all the time! I do not know how you do it! LOL.
Nader should have a roster spot next year period. He proved himself in a grade above college. Summer league is no league for a guy like Nader. He would be playing with most guys that do not know how to play NBA ball. A poor showing may not be his fault or skill set. So I believe he makes the team based on what he did this year.
This creates a real problem for Danny in a good and bad way.
We have great young talent!!!!!!!!
However to win a championship, you cannot have an over abundance of rookies on your roster. So lets do the math:
1) Dancing Bear
2) Zizic
3) Nader
4) First round pick
All I am saying is something has got to give or we have a very inexperienced team moving down the roster spots and perhaps your starting center in Zizic.

I disagree.....I think all four rookies could easily make a 15 man roster. Only the draft pick will likely be in the regular rotation next year, IMO. To say Zizic will be our starting center is a big stretch to me. I can see a roster /rotation like this next year, with all four on the roster:
C/PF- Horford
C/PF- Ibaka/Noel (R)/ T, Gibson- FA $15M
SF- Crowder
SG- Bradley
PG- Thomas
6. J. Brown
7. M. Smart
8. Kelly O.- RFA $12M
9. Top draft pick
10. Jerebko-FA $5M
11. Rozier
12. Zizic
13. Yabusele
14. Jackson
15. Nader
I think its easy to see 4 first year players on the roster next season

Thanks, 112288, but I didn't write that, I just copy-and-pasted it. But to answer your question the hardest part of being great all the time is fooling people into believing it.

Re: Abdel Nader Hoping To Make Celtics' 17-18 Roster After Strong D-League Season
The elephant in the room is made up of all those first and second year players who will be needed to play in the rotation and not just make the 15 man roster. One of the reasons I wanted Zizic and Yabusele on the roster this season was so that they could learn the NBA game as backups to Johnson and Horford. Yabusele will get minutes right away. He will truly blossom as Al's understudy. Zizic backing up Amir this season would have better prepared him for solid minutes and perhaps even starting next season. I wouldn't be surprised if Amir is brought back instead of one of the players Danny passed on at the trade deadline as good as they could be. On the bright side is Ante surpassing all expectations when he made the move to Turkey, carving out solid minutes on a strong veteran team. I'm pretty sure they will work out just fine but I sure can see the danger of putting too much on such young shoulders at the beginning of the season.
Horford/Yabusele
Zizic/
Crowder/Brown
Bradley/Smart
IT/Roxier/Jackson
first round pick
Nader
That leaves 3 slots that players like Amir, Jonas, Zeller, Mickey could potentially earn. (somehow I left Kelly out of this list and he is probably a keeper) We will still need a shooter unless Fultz can produce right away and Yabusele develops quickly. What makes this very young team not quite so young is the professional experience that Ante and Guerschon will bring, not to mention Abdel's D-league experience. These guys aren't college kids.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the C's are in the hunt for #18 this season.

These guys could easily all l;eave the Celts - Jonas, Young, Mickey, Green and Jackson. That would leave plent of room for the #1 pick, Nader, Yabu, and Zizic.
Re Ball, I don't think he has an NBA ready body at all, especially after Fox shut him down hard in 2 games this season. These four guys could share our guard minutes: AB, IT, Fultz, and Smart. We'd be set in the backcourt.

I liked Nader during the summer league and had hoped he might get down here for a few games. But, even Jackson could hardly get court time and Mickey, so it is understandable why he never made it down. Mickey hardly saw any time and I do believe he will probably be gone next year. With the bench as loaded as it is, they are going to run out of room'

on Ball, hes 6'6" and a stringbean, he couldn't cover Monk or Fox, defensively I don't see him staying in front of a lot of points. In this NBA you need to score as a point, not just distribute, I also question his scoring ability. His dad is a disgrace to all legit caring fathers out there.
