The Boston Celtics have waived 24-year-old small forward Abdel Nader, Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports reports.

The Boston Celtics have waived swingman Abdel Nader, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

8:58 AM - Jul 21, 2018

The Celtics roster is now at 14 players, one below the maximum. Nader's 2018-19 salary was only partially guaranteed for $450,000. His $1.4 million salary would have full guaranteed Aug. 1.

The team could enter the season with 14 players, which would allow for both transactional and financial flexibility. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge acknowledged heading into the year with 14 as a possibility when talking to reporters last week. Boston is a little more than $3 million over the luxury tax line. But it could also add another player.

After re-signing restricted free agent Marcus Smart earlier this week, the Celtics have three 2017-18 players still unsigned. Second-year guard Jabari Bird, who played last season on a two-way contract and shined as the squad's best player at Las Vegas Summer League, is a restricted free agent. Point guard Shane Larkin and big man Greg Monroe, who are both unrestricted, are unlikely to return.

Boston selected Nader with the No. 58-overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He spent the 2016-17 season with the Maine Red Claws before playing out his rookie year with the Celtics in 2017-18. He averaged 3.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per game while shooting 34 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range as a rookie.

Not a strange decision by the Cs. This guy was a very late second round pick and had not really done much anything as of yet to show that he can be a rotation player.

Time for Ainge to give a chance to another guy to give him a chance to get better enough to get near the rotation. Wanamaker, Bird, etc.

Late second round picks don't usually make it in the NBA. Thomas was much more of a surprise than a guarantee. Nader just was not seen as a rotation player at this time and he already had two years of trying to become such a player.

He will land on his feet in another country, and will hope to be able to do what Wanamaker is trying to do.

I wish him the best, but this was definitely for the best.

Traded for Rodney Purvis, who will be released, saving 450 grand in salary cap space. Small steps.

I just read about this on another site and it brings out where we now stand cap wise, which is about 2.5 million over the cap that we wish/would like to to stay under. the same site also suggests Morris is next on the cutting block. Right now the only team with the ability to outright take him on is the Kings (and the last thing we want to do is give them a decent player.

Morris + Celtics 2019 first for another teams 1st and two players with only partial and non guaranteed deals?

Scott Souza

yesterday
Abdel Nader put in nice effort to earn deal out of G-League w/ #Celtics but showed little in rare chances to contribute at NBA level. Many felt C's should have let him go & signed Jabari Bird for last year's playoffs but C's felt loyalty to solid guy who worked at it all season

I read that at the yahoo article also. but I don;t think the savings are correct.

Nader had a $450K guarantee on his deal this year, but Danny traded him for a player with ZERO guaranteed money in Purvis.

so Naders' guaranteed money moves with the trade, for cap purposes I believe.

so cutting Purvis allows us to drop his $1.36M salary off the cap entirely.

but since we are 14 players now, IF Danny signs Bird to a minimum deal it's a wash.

Everyone, including me, loves what Brad Stevens has brought to the Celtics since his arrival, but Danny Ainge may need to get some praise as well.

Yesterday's move of trading Nader was a small move, but still a move that may help gain another player somewhere down the road or at least be used to get under the tax cap.

This guy is always working and is a huge part of Boston's successes.

I totally agree with you, and they will never give him Exec of the Year because he is smarter than three quarters of them out there (or more) If he wins another title with this group he is putting together, he will walk with his head held high and not give a darn about what others think.

Hi,
I'm with Rosalie. Danny never sleeps, always scheming and plotting. He learnt from the best, from their achievements and their mistakes. Keeps his team updating, evolving. IMHO.
