Interesting proposal for celtics future
Was reading the comments on espn's recent piece on IT, and one guy (Joseph Beaty is his handle, don't want to steal another's thoughts) posted the following. Never seen this particular proposal - is it possible cap wise, and if so, is it wise??:
This is what's crazy about the nba... the celtics in 2017-2018 are going to explode... sign heyward to a max contract. Then Thomas will get a max contract. Draft Fultz.
After all that is said and done... the celtics will trade Smart, Olynyk, Rozier, 2018 nets (top 3 protected) amir johnson (sign to a 1 year deal for contract matching) to Detroit for Andre Drummond. I know what your thinking... please don't because of his FT woes... man could be a 15 pt 15 rebound 3 block shots guy for boston. Have Horford play his natural position of the 4 and still be able to stretch the D out. This is a team that could go the distance. Maybe Wade opts out and goes to Boston to be a leader and potential sixth man.
Thomas/Fultz
AB/Wade/Green
Heyward/Brown
Horford/low cost veteran
Drummond/Horford/ low cost vet
You have scoring, interior defense and rebounding, defense, and guys who can score and defend on the bench. And you're set for the next 3-5 years

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
1. Where's Crowder?
2. Zizic would be that "low cost vet" except he's young and not an NBA vet.
3. DWade? Is he serious? He'll be 36 next year, not including his 46 year old knees and I doubt his ego would allow him to play for the minimum.
4. I've been as down, or more, on Smart's shooting than anybody else on this board but am I giving him up for Drummond with a pick and Kelly and Rozier? No.
5. Kelly will be signing for $10M-$13M, depending upon who you talk to. That knocks Amir out of the contract unless he's playing for half of what he is playing for now. SVG won't take Amir instead of Kelly.
Drummond is a force but you cannot have him in at crunch time and that's a problem unless you have a really, really good back up center.

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
I always liked that guy who suggested we:
A) trade our second round picks this year for future draft picks
B) Draft Fultz (that depends on the balls though)
C) Toss enough cash towards Nerlons Noel that he cant refuse and Cuban wont want to match
D) use Horford to talk his former teammate into playing out his final year of his contract but asking for a trade to Boston- Boston resigns Olynyk to whatever deal is needed to make it happen after adding Zeller into the deal, Boston would also add in future picks to make the deal more digestable for the Hawks
E) sign Nader, Zizic and Yabby to deals
F) find deals to aquire more picks for Mikey (if possible) and Rozier and Jackson
Team would look like this
5- Neol-Horford-Zizic
4- Milsap-Horford- Yabby
3- Crowder- Brown- Nader
2- Bradley- Smart-Fultz
1-Thomas-Fultz-Smart
Green, Johnson and Jerebko could all be then reconsidered on one year deals as the team thinks is needed and cost effective.

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
This seems like a story written on a click bait website.
D. Wade will pick up his player option.
It's highly unlikely he is going to walk away from $23.8m next year.
There will be a number of teams in the running for Hayward.
Utah, Miami, Boston and others could be interested in offering him a max contract.
Is he a guy that you want to offer 4 years and $132m to? Maybe he is, maybe not.
Utah can offer 5 years/$180m.
Also, is Boston going to offer IT close to $30m per year?

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
tjmakz,
For those exact reasons I can also not see Wade or Hayward leaving their current teams.
Money talks to professional athletes as it does to the rest of us, and a young guy like Hayward leaving $48M on the table just does not make sense to anyone especially when there has been nothing ever mentioned about his being unhappy in Utah. Also, crazy for Wade to even think of leaving a $23 M contract in Chicago for next season as he will not get anything close to that amount anywhere else as a 36 37 year old player who will likely have to come off the bench.
Just not too many guys going to follow the path of the guy who went to Golden State two years ago for NBA peanuts (can't remember his name) after going to the Spurs for the same amount a year earlier.
In fact, the idea of signing a max level guy this summer may be a little bit far out there, in my opinion.
Perhaps trading for one, but not just signing a guy to come in and add to the core of what we already have.
Not sure I really like any of the potential free agent max guys out there and not even sure if I like any of the one who may (?) even be on the trade market.
Might be better to sign two younger guys who are exceptional level athletes for $15M per year and build that way. The new CBA could very well have eliminated most all max level free agent movement (as it was intended to do).

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
Wade is going no where, why would he bother? I know Riley never thought he would leave, but is he ready to meet that price? NO
I have felt for a while that even though Hayward is attractive, he is not going to leave Utah. He has a young family, a team he likes and a potential of making a huge killing with a new contract.
We can make all these assumptions, but first we have to know where we will be in the draft. As far as IT is concerned, I do believe they will pay him, he has earned it, is a good soldier here in Boston, and has earned the right to be paid.
I would like the Celtics to give Nader a real shot. He was sent to Maine to get experience...well he did and was player of the year in the D-league. He deserves his shot here. The two big guys will get aa shot at making the team, but I would not be shocked if Yabu goes back over seas for one more year of growth. I could be wrong.
This will be a nerve wracking off season but fun to see how it develops.

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
Everyone is commenting on Wade and Hayward, which to me are the least interesting aspects of the proposal. Wade was a throw away comment, and every nba writer on the planet has discussed Hayward to the Celtics. The Drummond suggestion was the one you don't hear so often. As Bob said, he is a force, but he would be a liability in crunch time due to poor FT shooting. However, if he contributes enough during non-crunch time, he might be worth it. Others will likely say he is a throw-back big who couldn't operate in Brad's offense. This may be true. But Brad is a clever guy, and I'm betting he could find a way to use him. I don't really know much about Drummond, and was curious to heat what the people here think.

Re: Interesting proposal for celtics future
In any game I have watch Drummond in the last year or so, including the last half of last year, I have been impressed about what he has
Done. I still feel he is in the learning stages of what it takes to be a true superstar. His rebounding goes without saying, and he has become a better scorer. With all that, he is a handicap with his free throw shooting. I would think he would have spent his last offseason just learning to shoot 60-70 percent of his free throws. With that he would never be available!
Sorry, I missed his name in the post. I guess I was just so adamant that there would be no way Wade would end here. I cannot stand him. And at his age, why in the world would he leave Chicago even though they may want him to. He is not trade bait because of the size of that contract.
just my opinion.

No need to ever apologize for being adamant about keeping Dwyayne Wade off the Celtics. Thanks for your thoughts on Drummond. No doubt FT shooting is a problem, but if it is causing his worth to be seriously underestimated, maybe Danny should take a look....
