The interview might not mean too much; if the Celtics fall below the first pick, Fultz will likely be off the board anyway. But if they do have a chance to take him, they will (of course) want to know what he's like. Combine interviews provide brief opportunities to begin relationships with prospects; it's critical to know whether a kid can, you know, play basketball real good, but personality factors into every decision.
And Fultz can, indeed, play basketball real good. The likely No. 1 pick already has Isaiah Thomas' blessing. Even if the Celtics would rather take someone at another position, Fultz or fellow point guard Lonzo Ball could be too talented to pass up near the top of the draft.
The Celtics will also meet with a number of other prospects at the combine. They are assured of landing a top-four pick, but won't know their exact lottery slot until the drawing Tuesday night. Boston's odds go like this:
1st pick: 25.0 percent
2nd pick: 21.5 percent
3rd pick: 17.8 percent
4th pick: 35.7 percent
It's not normal for a team to play Game 5 of a second-round series while its front office meets with the prospect it might realistically draft No. 1 overall. It's bonkers, really, but such is life for the Celtics.

MY NOTE: "It's bonkers, really, but such is life for the Celtics." - And life is good on Celtics Planet. We are up 3-2 in the EC Semi-Finals and we are the odds-on favorite for the #1 pick in the draft. One way or another, through the draft or trade, the good is going to be getting better. From Fultz's perspective he might have watched the game from somewhere in a Celtics facility, surrounded by Celtic employees etc. and watched us roll over Washington. If the prospect of being one of the top picks in the draft, be it #1 or #4, and joining a winning team instead one of the worst teams in the league, has to be motivation to excel when it comes time for him to do workouts.

Sure, the Cs interview this kid. Just like they probably interview another 30 or so of the kids at the combine.
Part of the process of looking at potential roster members even if this guy does not plan to actually participate at the combine camp.

Clyde,
One of the nice things about having no lower than the #4 pick is that we can get anybody to work out for us since, even if we get #4, we can tell Fultz and Ball that it is possible a trade could happen to take us from 4 to 1 or 2. That's not that far a jump up.
