Jackie Mac claims Danny was trying to trade Isaiah for a lottery pick last summer. Wonder if ITs other worldly season has caused Danny to re-evaluate his worth, or is Danny, like many others, convinced you can't win with a 5'9" PG???

Isaiah Thomas' huge 2016-2017 season with the Celitcs almost never was, according to Jackie MacMullan.

On the Bob Ryan Boston Podcast, MacMullan said general manager Danny Ainge unsuccessfully offered the All-Star point guard for a second lottery pick in last year's draft.

"Before the draft last year, Danny [Ainge] was trying to get two picks, not just Jaylen Brown," MacMullan said. "He was on the phone with everybody from coast-to-coast, and he was offering everybody. That includes Marcus Smart and Isaiah Thomas, and anything else they needed to get where he wanted to go. There were no untouchables on that team last year."

The Celtics drafted Jaylen Brown with the third pick in that draft, amid speculation that they would either pick Kris Dunn or trade for Jimmy Butler.

MacMullan said she believes the only untouchable on the Celtics right now is Al Horford, who Boston signed last offseason to a max contract.

Boston currently faces an interesting decision regarding whether or not to give Thomas a max contract extension. Thomas is an elite scorer, but a defensive liability at 5-9, and the Celtics hold the No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft, where point guard Markelle Fultz widelly viewed top prospect.

IT had an amazing season. He is a 2x All-Star over the last 2 seasons, so they are recent nominations, and he just got named All-NBA Second Team.

However, he just suffered an injury that may require surgery (we'll find out more sometime this week as he consults with various medical experts on the extent of the damage and the recommended path forward). It will take months of doing nothing, maybe not even getting on a stationary bike for 3 months at least, for rehab; surgery or no surgery.

I'm not a healthcare professional but I've been looking into this a bit. Surgery is not necessary in all instances. The recovery time, however, seems to be pretty much the same either way, about 4 months total, plus or minus a month. That's a long time to not touch a basketball. Remember Kelly earlier this year after having surgery on his shoulder during the off-season? He was couldn't touch a basketball for 5-6 months either. His cardio was fine, because it was his shoulder they operated on, but his shot was not fluid because of his layoff. Thomas won't be able to do any cardio and probably will have to stay off the court for shooting practice too. It takes a little time to get ones rhythm back.

If IT comes back looking "off", it will drive down his trade value regardless of his recent years' accolades as GMs wait to see that he is all the way back.

One thing we can say about IT, though, is that his pain threshold is through the roof. No wonder Kobe loves him, they have that in common.

Then I turn on local station and that idiot that Felger is on the tv with, Tony Mazzarotti, (baseball is supposed to be his sport) came out today and claimed that IT quit on his teammates.  

WHERE DO THESE PEOPLE GET OFF SLAMMING A GUY LIKE THIS

Writers can be so downgrading and I find it upsetting that they are allowed to get away with it

Jackie Mac is not a hack. It would be a mistake to lump her in with Felger and Mazz, who are hacks. I am actually not the least bit surprised regarding Jackie's rumor -  all it really says is that last summer, in Danny's eyes no one was untouchable. Phrased that way, it doesn't sound so shocking. Despite IT's amazing season, knowing Danny, I would guess that its still true. He might not say it out loud, but in his mind, I would  bet no one is untouchable still if the right offer were to present itself. This is how a GM should think...

Jackie was ahead of the curve about the Celtics trading Rondo.

Felger and Mazz are idiots.

i would never lump her with those two blitering idiots. All of a sudden they have become basketball guru's because the Red Sox and Bruins are terrible and it is off season for the Pats.

My point is that sometimes these reporters throw things out there that have no basis. Jackie has been around basketball for a long time. However in the last two years she has given info that has proved to be supposition. I have watched her for years, so believe me I would never call her a "hack". Now....those other two spend their days trying to come up with foolish ideas regarding the Celtics. Last night I listened to them try very hard to trip Wyc Grousebeck up regarding the draft pick and the signing of a max contract free agent. The only problem was that Wyc was a step ahead of them all the time, and he basically told them exactly what HE wanted to tell them.

The Celtics’ president of basketball operations appeared Thursday on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher & Rich” and was asked to address a report from ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan that he considered trading his All-Star point guard to obtain another lottery pick ahead of the 2016 NBA Draft. Ainge not only shot down that rumor, but he also detailed why such a move would be foolhardy. “We had eight draft picks and were trying to consolidate our picks to move up or out of the draft,” Ainge said, via CBS Boston. “We were also making plans to go get (free agents) Kevin Durant and Al Horford, so why in the world would we go there without Isaiah Thomas and try to have our best player traded for a lottery pick? It just doesn’t make any sense at all.”

That was an odd one from Jackie She's usually the most credible writer covering the team.

I guess she's earned a pass or two, but I hope it's just a one-off kind of thing.

Danny could be telling the truth or might not be telling the truth.
The same for Jackie.
Even if Danny was trying to trade IT for a lottery pick, there's no way he would admit it now.
Danny didn't want to pay Rondo and he might not have wanted or might not want to pay IT.
Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle.
A team might have inquired about IT and Danny could have said he's only trading him for a high lottery pick...???

Putting Rondo and IT in the same conversation is wrong. Almost everyone knew that Rondo was going to be traded. His value had gone down and he obviously was not working with Stephens the way they had hoped.

Everyone always thinks Danny is lying when he addresses certain issues. His comments made alot of sense if you listened to the whole interview. Jackie, recently, has had a tendency to reach for the "one" that no one knows, truth or not. I have always liked her and the way she reports. This is one she should have held back on, I think

Rondo was traded to Dallas before Christmas in 2014.  Isaiah came to the Celtics at the trading deadline in 2015.  They were never wearing our flavor of green at the same time.  I just wanted to get that out there in case someone misinterpreted tj's post like I did on first glance.  I now don't think he meant that at all.

Still, the two players and their value to Danny have no comparison.  Rondo was on his way out, he didn't fit our system and he had worn out his welcome for many fans and possibly the team as well.

Isaiah was and is the current face of our team.  He represented the Celtics at the draft and he is our All-Star player for the past two years.

We are beyond saturation with the amount of draft picks we had.  We certainly didn't need another.  Danny's reasons in disputing Jackie Mac's report hold true.

My point about Rondo was that Danny didn't want to pay him big money.
IT is waiting for the brinks truck to unload an incredible amount of money next summer.
Do we think that Danny would not entertain trade offer for IT now, for a high lottery pick?
IT might be the face of the franchise, but having to pay him $25-$30m per year might not be that attractive to Boston or other teams.
Jackie has not released any proof and Danny denied the story, so Danny gets the benefit of the doubt.

Since we can't read Danny or Wyc's mind, let's just say, this subject is tabled. We really have NO idea what lies ahead. But a team without IT will surprise me, he has done whatever has been asked of him. So....let's just wait, ok????
