NBA Rumors: Celtics Prospect Guerschon Yabusele Underwent Foot Surgery
by Ricky Doyle
on Mon, May 22, 2017 at 1:41PM
Guerschon Yabusele’s preparation for the 2017-18 season isn’t starting off on the right foot — or the left foot, for that matter.
Yabusele, who was selected in the first round (16th overall) of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, recently underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from the top of both feet, a league source told ESPN.com’s Chris Forsberg. The C’s prospect reportedly is unlikely to participate in the summer league.
Yabusele, 21, spent much of this past season in China before joining the Maine Red Claws — Boston’s D-League affiliate — in March. There’s a chance he could wind up on the Celtics’ roster next season, as the 6-foot-8, 260-pound big man showed promise between his two stops.
Yabusele was one of three players selected by the Celtics in the first round of last year’s draft, joining Jaylen Brown (third) and Ante Zizic (23rd). The France native is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, according to Forsberg.

MY NOTE: NOT good. I'm hoping the bone spurs aren't such a big problem, although they are symptomatic of stress (e.g. too much weight) the problem is that he won't get to learn the Celtic playbook in summer league (a few games in Maine won't cut it) and he won't be working on his game this summer neither. Supposedly, 3 weeks before the patient can walk normally on his foot. Summer league begins about 6 weeks from now. Kinda weird the spurs were on the top of the feet. ??? I wonder if that will speed up the rehab period because he isn't walking ON where they were...?
And why did this happen just now? The Maine Red Claws' season has been over for a couple of weeks now.

Eat yourself out of the league - just what basketball players need is the added weight to make the pounding that there joints take a little worst. When will they learn (players and management )

I don't understand your post. He reportedly has 5% body fat. That is pretty lean.

Gyso,
And the spurs were on the top of his foot. I probably should have been more clear in my comments. They are usually stress related but they are usually at a point of contact, like the heel.

? why did it take so long to recognize this problem? Will he end up overseas again, do another season there when he is physically able or just rehab here and give it a go when he is ready. Always something.

Its just an issue that I have with certain nba body types - I'm sort of leery about players that weigh in at about 260 lbs and are about 6'7" regardless of their body fat level. Makes me wonder if their might be an issue with the height-weight to size of joint (hip, knee, foot,) ratio. It all goes back to studies that I had many years ago. His body type has been described as one that could encounter weight problems down the road. We shall see.

Bone spurs from the top of both feet??? Did he play soccer for a long time? Could this be a result of that? Strange place for bone spurs.

Gyso,
5% is Ray Allen territory and yeah, that's real lean.
Not sure I've ever heard of bone spurs on top of the foot before. Have a lot of players been landing on his feet? Weird.

Swish,
True, but Ray's bone spurs were in his heels, where they often are and are the points of contact. Presumably, the bones in his body, including his feet, are probably smaller than the bones in a 280# man. Yabby's bone spurs were on the top of his feet, so I don't see how that has anything to do with contact or weight upon them.

If he is 270 with 5% body fat, he could get down to 256.5 by reducing his body fat to zero. Of course he`d be dead.

he'll be ready for training camp. I doubt Danny or Brad is counting on him to be in the rotation next year anyway.

JR,
Your calculation (270 x .95 = 256.5) assumes that bone, cartilage and other non-muscle or fat components are included in body fat measurements. I do not believe they are (then it wouldn't be a body fat measurement but would be gross weight). For a 270# man with 5% body fat, with an appropriately dense skeleton, to lose 18.5 pounds would be very significant since almost all the loss would come from cannibalizing muscle and almost none from fat (since there isn't much to take away) and none from bone. I would think such a diet would be very unhealthy and completely inappropriate for a professional athlete who requires muscle.

What is a bone spur on the top of the foot?
A:
QUICK ANSWER
The Mayo Clinic explains that bone spurs are simply an extra bone on top of the foot. According to WebMD, these spurs occur when the bone tries to repair itself by building extra bone, and they also form in response to pressure, rubbing and stress that occur over a long period of time. What is bone spur surgery on the top of the foot?
What is a bone spur?
What is an accessory navicular bone?
FULL ANSWER
Also known as osteophytes, bone spurs primarily form from the wear and tear that comes with osteoarthritis. As WebMD explains, bone spurs sometimes occur as a natural part of aging. The site goes on to state that the discs that provide cushioning between the bones of the spine may break down with age. This leads to pain and swelling, and in some cases, bone spurs form along the edges of the joint over time. WebMD further states that bone spurs form from other causes, such as tight ligaments and as a result of activities like dancing and running that put pressure on the feet. They may also form when people wear poorly fitting shoes.
The Mayo Clinic explains that people may not detect this condition for years and that the condition may not merit treatment. However, bone spurs may break off from the larger bone and float into the joints.

I was more or less joking , Bob. My point was that a guy with 5% body fat is not guilty of overeating. The American Council On Exercise says that the pecentage of essential fat in men is 2 to 5 percent. Essential body fat is defined as " the level below which physical and physiological health will be negatively affected." A certain amount of body fat is necessary to protect vital organs. I don`t know where the 5% number came from , but I am assuming that it is accurate.

Even though I doubt that Ainge or Stevens really needed to see this guy in the summer league season, it is still a little concerning that with Maine having been done for a month why these operations were not done sooner.
