Re: Interim Party Report
Sam,
I had a terrific time last night. That is with the exception of the Lake show, well, not showing up at all. I could not have asked for a better time with a few Celtics fans. You are sure lucky and blessed to have someone as lovely as Mrs Sam to enjoy life with. She was a pleasure to talk to last night.
NYCelt, you were right about meeting Sam and Mrs Sam. First, Sam was exactly what I expected from me getting to know him at BDC and here on Sam's Site the past couple years. What I mean is, he is just as nice and easy to talk to on the computer as he is in person. I am so blessed that he decided to make one more trip to SF. For those that have not had the pleasure to meet Sam and Mrs. Sam you are missing a really nice couple. Mrs Sam, thank you for supporting Sam in what he does with the board. We are all benificiaries (sp) for your kindness and understanding. Again, thank you for sharing his time with us.
Jeb and BobHeck, you two were not bad in your own right, LOL. Thanks for not rubbing my defeat in to much with the Lakers. I know that you two were trying to be nice about it. I appreciate it. You all were too kind instead of telling me how it really is. If your a Lakers fan we still have home court, but you have to be more than just a lkittle concerned if your being honest with your self. Jeb, glad you made it home safely. Boy, you have more guts than I do to ride your bike in the SF traffic at night. I enjoyed your questions at dinner to Sam. Very informative. Bobheck, I also appreciated your interest in my prior career while in the Navy. That was fun for me. Since I retired 3 years ago from the Navy I don't get the chance to talk about it much.
We even had a call in by Babyskyhook to Sam while we were having drinks and talking basketball. Now I reall wish I could have made the Friday viewing party. Good luck in wrapping up your series with the Heat.

Re: Interim Party Report
Cow,
Yea, I remember a couple years ago, actually I think it was 3-4 years ago, where he quit in a Suns playoff game. At least he stopped shooting and the Lakers got blown out of that game also. Of course, we don't know if Phil said get your team mates involved. I think his team mates are intimidated of him when he is on the court. They defer to him to much and are quick/happy to defer to him.
For what it is worth, this will be my last post probably until Thursday. I am heading to spend a couple of days with my dad. He has never owned a computer. So, if I want to get on line, it will be the old fashion way. Dial-up. Yuk!

Mustang,
I would not be worried about this series, I cannot imagine them in winning LA.
Glad you got to meet Mr. & Mrs. Sam, they are great folks. My wife & I consider them to be real friends.

Re: Interim Party Report
I haven't put in my 2c about the party in SF yet.
Let's start with the #1 biggest priority, Sam's wife, Sally. She is absolutely one of the most charming and congenial people I have met in a long while. Why is this the #1 biggest priority? Because friends and family come before sports. Sammy boy, you are one lucky dog. 31 years of marriage is a testament to your good sense and her thick hide (kidding!). Seriously, it was ridiculously easy to fall into a conversation with her about every topic that came up. I'm sure Jeb, who spent most of dinner speaking with her, will attest to that. Sam displayed his usual ability to put people at ease. No wonder he made a living out of interviewing people and conducting focus groups. He's as good with people, in person, as he is writing. They say you should write like you speak. This helps to explain why I write so much. Sometimes, though, more is just more. Sam's writing is as easy to read as pie. In a particularly exuberant moment, I compared Sam's writing to Hemingway's. A bit over the top, perhaps, but their styles are both very natural in their feel. To be honest, I feel a little cheated when Sam only writes a one-liner.
The game at Lefty O'Doul's was great. It was a ton of fun. We even picked up an itinerant Celtic fan from SF, who joined us for the game. Aside from breaking the "Celtic Party jinx" and winning, it was just good fun. How nice to actually put faces together with written words. It's amazing how different people are from your expectations and how personal interaction can change one's behavior towards one another.
Bostonian128 was a member who never posted. Since the party, he has not only started posting, he has even initiated a couple of threads. Excellent! Glad to see you're more active. Greeks and Armenians are not known for being shy. Glad to see it's true. Keep it up.
LACeltfansince62 displayed considerable basketball IQ throughout the game. He was nailing plays, boy. It was a pleasure sitting next to him during the game.
PumpsieGreen was there with some underwater photos he took at Cozumel (one of my favorite dive spots). I've had my issues with Pumpsie's postings, but in person he was very convivial (to use Sam's word) and easy to be with. Like I said, the personal touch makes all the difference. I'm going to take Pumpsie off my 'ignore' list, since I now think I have a slightly better measure of the man. The pictures, too, were really good.
Jeb, you da man. Can't wait until the housing market in Austin picks up so you can sell and move up to San Francisco so we can do this more often.
MustangGator, it was an honor to talk to you about your service. I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. When your son, Donald, gets excited about "the Pinches" winning, be a nice guy and DON'T wave a purple-and-gold jersey in front of him. He's on the right track. :-)
Can't wait for next year. I know it'd be too much to get two in a row in San Francisco, although it'd be nice. Lord knows, the weather couldn't have been more auspicious.

I might be down for something in NYC. I go to school on SI, so I should still be here.

Re: Interim Party Report
BobH,
Thanks for the kind words. I agree with you completely about Sally, and you don't even know the half of it. Actually, you're the one who expresses yourself beautifully, and I've extolled to many people the virtues of your analysis of basketball mechanics. So do we now go out and look for furniture?
i sort of went into withdrawal when we all went our separate ways, although we got to hold onto Mustang,Gator through Sunday breakfast. The face-to-face camaraderie was spectacular, and it'll be missed.
I finally found a substitute this evening in the dinner companionship of my lifelong idol, role model, and contemporary friend Bobby Doerr. We had a great time, and I received my usual inspiration just by being in his presence for a couple of hours. I was also able to show Sally his memorabilia room, which is beyond belief. And he shared the news that the Red Sox have commissioned a new statuary of "The Teammmates" (Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky and Bob) to replace Ted's statue outside Fenway Park. (Ted's will be moved farther down Van Ness Street.) I guess the statue has been finished all that remains is the unveiling.
So now, for the second time in two days, I'm going through withdrawal. Thank God for Jack Bauer and Chloe, who will be on shortly here in Eugene, OR.
I, too, look forward to the next gettogether, whenever and whereafter.
Sam

Having only met Ms Sam for a too short a while during our August off season get together last year I can only second everything you say about her.
I think the funniest moment was when at breakfast Sam mentioned his 15,000 + posts on BDC and although he could not see it as she was next to him, the look and rolling of the eyes she gave him, were something no words could describe.
I'm glad all had fun on the left coast, and hope like heck to be able to make one that is a little bit closer to home.
