Before any confusion starts to spread, there has never been a point where Isaiah Thomas was expected to have surgery.

On Isaiah Thomas - hip impingement and labrum tears do not heal themselves. Will require close management, door likely not closed on surgery

I wonder if this injury is one that could become chronic. If I was IT and wanting max money I would have opted for surgery but they say there is 6 to 9 month recovery period.
It sounds like they decided to simply manage the situation.
Hoping things work out

Dboss,
I have also wondered about the possibility of IT's hip situation continuing to linger.
Right now he may appear "recovered" (no operation at this time) in the almost three months since he had to shut everything down during the playoffs, but he has also not been required to push his hip in training camp or a full season of games, travel, practices, etc, etc as of yet.
Since his hip problem (the cause) still seems to be a mystery (at least to me), it is difficult to guess as to his total recovery will be. If he had a bruising of some sort he will likely be fine, but if he tore a labrum or injured the ligament that holds the femur in place we may just find that when he starts to really push himself again that he is indeed not 100% ready.
His hip will very much determine the value of his next contract. I hope that he gets back to 100%.

Re: Isaiah Thomas Does NOT Need Surgery
Dx from reports I've read was a torn hip labrum. Unless the MRI evaluator was on crack, a torn labrum is a torn labrum. Perhaps there are other clinicians who think a torn labrum either can heal itself or unhealed does not pose a problem. I would like to read some of their opinions. I can't understand how this will not present a problem with increased and prolonged athletic activity.

Isaiah Thomas says hip feels 'great,' should be ready for training camp

Isaiah Thomas isn't concerned about his injured hip, and the Celtics point guard said he should be ready to go by the start of training camp next month.
Thomas said he's been just resting since his injured hip forced him out of the Eastern Conference Finals in May, but that he recently got back in the gym to start getting back into shape.
"The hip is great," Thomas told the Herald on Saturday during his annual basketball clinic at BU, where he was hosting more than 400 campers. "It’s going well. Rehabbing it, but it’s going well. It’s a real slow rehab process, but it’s getting better and that’s what it’s all about."
Thomas opted not to get surgery on his hip, which he first hurt during the regular season. He re-aggravated a right femoral-acetabular impingement with labral tear during Game 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers before the Celtics shut him down.
The guard said the decision not to get surgery was upon the recommendation of specialists and people in his circle. Instead, they decided it was best to rest and stay off it.
"The decision was to sit and rest, and get my legs stronger, get my muscle back working again," Thomas said. "We're just going to try to get to 100 percent as quick as possible.
"I’ve been resting. That was the gameplan when my season was over. To rest and stay off it as much as possible to see how it reacts. It’s reacted well, it’s just going to take some time."
Thomas didn't look like he was laboring or hurting at all as he played hoops with youngsters at his camp, which included some games of 1-on-1. Granted, he wasn't going full speed against kids, but he's progressing and said he should be ready by the start of camp.
"That’s the plan, yeah," he said. "I should be ready by camp, but I’m getting back in the gym shooting and being able to work out in the weight room and get my cardio back, because I’ve been down for two and a half months since the season ended. It’s getting there though. This week has been great progress for me."

Re: Isaiah Thomas Does NOT Need Surgery
I hope that Thomas recovers completely from his hip problems, but I still fear that without an operation that issues will likely linger once he starts pounding on it game after game. Such a hip injury is not like a broken finger from what I have read.
If an operation is needed at any time during this next season he is going to be out for four to six months, and even then there is no guarantee that he immediately is capable of playing 30+ minutes and scoring 25 points per game.
