Gordon Hayward will undergo surgery tonight, agent Mark Bartelstein tells ESPN.
Injured less than six minutes into his Celtics debut on Tuesday night in Cleveland, the 27-year-old has been at the hospital since the team arrived back from Cleveland last night, and is confirmed to be suffering from a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia.
“He’s down. Obviously there’s a physical pain to it, but I think it’s doubled by the emotional pain of it,” Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said of Hayward before tonight’s game against the Bucks at TD Garden. “He put a lot of effort into trying to start this career out well in Boston, but this is a setback, we’re expecting a full recovery. We know there’s going to be a lot of tough days ahead on that recovery, but at the same time, I think hopefully he’ll improve day-to-day, but it’s been tough. It’s been tough on him.”
Hayward was mentioned as the sixth member of the C’s starting lineup tonight, generating a huge roar from the TD Garden crowd before Marcus Smart introduced a video message from Hayward on the Garden jumbotron.
Even after he undergoes surgery tonight, it is not believed that the Celtics will immediately hold Hayward to a specific timeline in terms of his recovery.

Gordon Hayward will have surgery on ankle Wednesday night

BOSTON – Gordon Hayward will have surgery on his left ankle tonight, according to a league source.
Hayward, who suffered a left ankle injury in the first quarter of Boston’s 102-99 loss at Cleveland on Tuesday night, was considering having the surgery in Boston or back in Indiana by a doctor who had operated on him when he played at Butler.
It’s too soon to determine a timetable for Hayward’s return, although the Celtics anticipate he will most if not all of the remainder of this season.
Hayward’s injury delivers a major blow to a Celtics team that were considered a top-two team in the East by most.
With Hayward out for an extended period of time, teams like Washington and Toronto are likely to get more serious consideration as another strong threat to Cleveland which has advanced to the NBA Finals each of the last three seasons.
Replacing Hayward in the Celtics starting lineup was Marcus Smart who joined Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Al Horford.
