Smart's Injury?
As many of you know, I am a 100% supporter of Marcus Smart, and am very happy that he was not traded yesterday and hope that he is re-signed next summer.
Now I wonder what is taking so long to get back onto the court after this "cut" injury? Tom Brady played on the 5th day after he cut his throwing hand and needed 13 stitches while Marcus has now been absent for at least two weeks with a projection for missing another 10 days.
I have had numerous cuts and surgeries as many of you have also had that have required stitches and have never needed three plus weeks for healing.
The Cs have given up over 106 points per game since Smart got hurt (99 per game before the injury) if you do not count the terrible Knicks game in your countings. Boston has now dropped below the Spurs on points allowed while Smart has been recovering.
If there is nothing more to this injury that goes beyond even a severe cut, the medical team needs to figure things out sooner rather than later and get our defensive leader back on the court.

Re: Smart's Injury?
I cut my hand, way back when the Dead Sea was just sick. A couple tendons got cut as well. I could not extend my index finger to point, nor could I move it side of side.
After seeing the contraption on his hand when he was sitting on the bench, it reminded me of my old injury. Why were they imobilizing his hand if it was only a cut? It has to be more than a simple flesh wound.
I'm not saying it is a conspiracy, but there may be more to it than they are telling us.

Re: Smart's Injury?
While I was watching one of the games shortly after Smart injured his hand, the announcer (Mike Gorman I believe) said that Smart had fractured his hand. This may be the reason it is taking so long. If he did it on a picture frame and glass, as Gyso said, he could have cut tendons too. Those take a while to heal.
The only thing wrong with this to me is that he does not have a cast on or never did. He is at all the games, is travelling with the team.
I don't know, but I do know one thing, we miss him on the floor defensively there is no doubt about that.

Re: Smart's Injury?
Rosalie,
If Smart already had a broken hand I think that he would have already not have been playing as the Cs are very careful and cautious with all of their injured players.
And, if he already had a hand injury of any kind it was completely stupid on his part to hit anything on a wall with that same hand.

Re: Smart's Injury?
I am not saying that he already had this injury, I am just saying what Gorman said during one of the games. Marcus obviously injured that hand when he broke a photo fram. It is just that I had never heard of this as a fractured hand, that is all. This is one injury. Judging from what looked like a cast on his hand/arm last night, this looks like more than a cut hand

Re: Smart's Injury?
He still struggles to hit open shots, so that means he's almost back to where he was before his injury.

Fortunately it is not his shooting that we miss.

Re: Smart's Injury?
Not sure when this video at the practice facility was shot, but if he can shoot with his right hand how come he cannot play? Are the Cs hiding more about his health or are they punishing him?
If they are, indeed, punishing him they needed to fine him for being stupid, but get him on the court.
Our team has missed his tenacity, grrrrr etc for too long now already.
If he has additional injuries, he looks pretty healthy in this video as he shows no casts, wraps, or any other type of material meant to hold him together.
When Smart finally does return, he will show his value again to the team even if he still does not shoot any better than earlier in the season.

According to league sources, #Celtics Marcus Smart was back in town yesterday and had a private workout with the team. He has been officially cleared to practice tonight and play Friday.

I have seen nothing on a fine. For all we know the Celtics had a sit down with Marcus.RosalieTCeltics wrote:So, they handled it "in house"? How much do you think they fined him????
It will be good to see him back on Friday.
Just in time for the last stretch.

You may be right, or it is something we will never hear about. I know one thing, I am ready for him to get back on the court and help this team. I certainly hope the all star break will prove beneficial to them.

He hit 3-5 with the last one a swish. I liked how a couple of them had just enough English to rattle in. Kyrie spoke of the need to put enough English on a shot.

Marcus Smart says lacerated hand could've ended season had glass not missed tendons

ESPN Staff Writer
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart said doctors told him to play the lottery after he avoided what could have been a season-ending injury when he punched a glass picture frame out of frustration last month in Los Angeles.
Smart, who returned to practice Wednesday after missing Boston's final 11 games before the All-Star break due to right hand lacerations, detailed how doctors pulled a large shard of glass from his palm that narrowly avoided shredding two tendons near the pinky on his shooting hand.
"[Doctors] said the two tendons that ran along the pinky area, the main tendons, and literally the glass was sitting right in between them. So, [the doctors said],'You should go play the lotto or something because you missed your tendons,'" Smart said. "They don't understand it. They don't really see how. So I thank God for that every day. It could have been worse."
What would have happened if glass had cut the tendons?
"I probably would have had to have surgery," said Smart. "I would have been done for the year."
Instead, Smart spent the past month simply waiting for cuts on the back of his hand to heal. He wore merely a small bandage Wednesday during his return to full-team activities and deemed himself ready to play when Boston opens the second half of the season on Friday in Detroit.

The Celtics went 6-5 without Smart and fell to second place in the Eastern Conference. Boston still leads the league in defensive rating (100.9), but that rating ballooned to 105.2 while Smart was out. Smart said he felt like he let his teammates down by not being available over the past month.
"I was devastated, just from the fact that I couldn't even get out there and do anything to help," said Smart. "I'm a competitor, and I think anybody in this league if you ask them they'll tell you: It's one thing to sit on the bench because of something that happened that you couldn't control, but it's another to sit on there for something you can control. I feel like I let my team down. But I got a second chance to come out and redeem myself."
All-Star big man Al Horford, who supported Smart even after the guard let his emotions get the best of him, saw an energized Smart at Boston's first practice after the All-Star break.
"I think he was excited to be back," Horford said. "There's no question that having Marcus back makes our defense a lot better. As a group, what I said before and I'll say it again, our focus and commitment to defending -- that's what we need to do. It has to start on our first game on Friday."
All-Star guard Kyrie Irving shared his sentiments.
"[Smart] just adds a very unique understanding to the game on both ends of the floor," Irving said. "He'll be able to break down the defense and create opportunities for not just himself, but the rest of us. We all know how great he is defensively. What he adds to our team is great. It's unmatched."
Celtics players and coaches have routinely referenced how Smart impacts winning, and they hope he can bring that flare for big plays in key moments when he returns to the court.
"Hopefully, it's a good lift. He's been a key part of our team for four years now," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. "Not only does he add what he adds, but he knows what's going on to the nth degree because he's been around here for so long. Obviously, having him out at practice was good today. That always raises the energy level when you have someone new at practice.
"I'm sure he'd second this -- [punching glass] wasn't a good move. You don't want to put yourself in that risk, but luckily nothing beyond what happened happened. His hand is a lot better, and that's obviously encouraging. You don't want anyone to pay any more than he did with regard to time missed, time away; he does want to play, he's a guy who really likes to play, he's a good teammate. I know how antsy he is, so that would have been even harder."
Smart, who explained he had no pain or setbacks during full-contact activities Wednesday, said he ran a gamut of emotions during his absence but that he is motivated to stay on the court and help his team pull itself from its pre-All-Star-break funk.
"One day I was sad. One day I was mad. Frustrated, irritated, annoyed, all those words," Smart said of how he was feeling while sidelined. "The lesson I probably have to say is that you can't take things for granted.
"Us as a team, we've taken things for granted, as well. We started off hot this season, and teams came after us. And we kind of hit that slope and started plateauing. And that's one thing you can't do in this league. So the second half's going to be huge for us."

Re: Smart's Injury?
Thank God there is finally going to be a game. I bet Marcus Smart is going up the walls like me with basketball withdrawal. Will the team be rusty or determined? How will Smart do? What about Moose? Is that going to work out or what?
This is Horford's and Smart's now. Even a guy like Baynes, Moose or even Morris could step up to the plate and become modern day PJ Brown's and Perk's. Maybe Theis makes such a leap that he becomes the first big off the bench.
I am dreaming, but one never knows. They need to share the ball and let go of the ego. That's what is so great about Smart. He has the KG drive to win. He should talk to an anger management shrink if only to solidify what Bob was saying about being careful.
Maybe Tatum's pinky has healed and he'll start hitting threes like before. Jaylen and Smart are the two most likely to break out. Possibly Rozier. The better each player shares as a team, they could win a title. It is not to make some progress and wait a while, a year or two. They said we'd be waiting a while for #17 but it happened in year one of the window. This team is different. The league has changed.
Horford looked cooked in that last game. He looked 38 playing on a veteran contract. Jason Collins would have been more helpful. Al was that bad.
I think he will dominate the next several games. Kyrie will be Kyrie, a top NBA player. These aren't great opponents coming up, but the team did go into the break at rock bottom. They played like a lottery team. So some nails are being chewed.
I'm expecting some wins and good play out of the break.
