Celtics Wrap: C’s Punch Ticket To Second Round With Game 7 Win Over Bucks
NESN by Adam London on Sat, Apr 28, 2018 at 10:24PM
The Boston Celtics are on to the second round of the 2018 NBA playoffs. In the final installment of a fantastic first-round series, the Celtics defended home court and took down the Milwaukee Bucks in a 112-96 Game 7 win Saturday night at TD Garden. A trio of starters led the way for Boston. Terry Rozier and Al Horford shined with 26 points apiece, while Jayson Tatum wasn’t far behind with 20. Milwaukee’s loss was to not fault of its stars, as Khris Middleton (32 points), Eric Bledsoe (23 points) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (22) points all had big nights. With the win, the Celtics win the series 4-3, while the Bucks embark on summer vacation. Here’s how it all went down:
STARTING FIVE PG: Terry Rozier SG: Jaylen Brown SF: Jayson Tatum PF: Semi Ojeleye C: Al Horford
EARLY EDGE Both teams started out relatively slow off the tip, but while this trend continued for the Bucks throughout the first quarter, the Celtics flipped the switch in the second half of the frame and claimed a 30-17 lead after the opening 12 minutes. Tatum carried the load on offense for the Celtics early on. While he only connected on two of five shots from the field, he made it to the charity stripe five times and buried all of his free throws. Boston also received a lift off the bench from Aron Baynes, who chipped in six first-quarter points including this mid-range jumper that beat the horn. The C’s as a team shot 57.9 percent from the field in the first, while the Bucks posted a lowly 35 percent clip.
WEATHER THE STORM The Bucks responded with a strong punch after a weak first quarter, going on a 13-2 run to open the second to cut Boston’s lead to two. The C’s would recuperate, though, outscoring the visitors 18-12 the rest of the way to take a 50-42 lead into the break. Horford powered the Celtics’ offense in the second with 10 points, two of which coming on the back end of a great all-around play from Marcus Smart. Rozier also had a strong frame for Boston with seven points after being limited to just two in the first. Bledsoe was the lone Bucks player to score in double figures in the first half with 12. The C’s also received a bit of a scare from Brown, who exited the game with just over three minutes left in the quarter while favoring his upper-leg. The second-year swingman appeared to tell trainers he believed it was a cramp as he made his way back to the locker room.
THRIVING IN THE THIRD The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the third, but it was the Celtics who stayed consistent throughout the quarter. Boston hung 31 points in the frame to swell its advantage and take an 81-67 lead in the fourth. For the second consecutive quarter, it was Horford who provided the spark. The veteran forward posted another 10-point quarter, while Tatum wasn’t far behind with seven. And after being held scoreless in the first half, Marcus Morris chipped in six points in the third, including this tough 3-pointer from the corner which got a rise out of TD Garden and the Celtics bench. As for Brown, he rode the stationary bike for a few minutes before making his way back to the locker room. Not long after, he was stretched out by trainers court side and returned to Boston’s bench.
WINNING TIME There would be no comeback for the Bucks Saturday night. This time it was Rozier who would lead the charge for the green with 12 points in the final frame to put the nail in Milwaukee’s coffin. Middleton’s relentless attack kept the visitors in the game in the fourth, but it simply wasn’t enough.
PLAY OF THE GAME Tatum wasn’t satisfied with just a highlight-reel block.
UP NEXT The Celtics will take on the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is to be determined.

Terry Rozier III THE ENERGIZER BUNNY.........HE KEEPS GOING...AND GOING....AND GOING!
6 KEYS TO THE GAME:
1) Quick outlet passes and pushing the ball not allowing the Bucks to set up defensively
2) Ball movement......and players moving and not standing around, setting good picks and screens, hitting mid range shots in the paint to keep the defense honest
3) Paint penetration and crashing the basket
4) The coaching staff finally getting a defensive plan in place by sagging in the paint and double teaming the Greek
5) Physical play
6) Baynes finally playing like an animal!

Unlike game 6 The Celtics stopped the fast breaks and the made the shots that they needed.
Great game by Semi. His defense on the freak was really impressive.
Al, Rozier and Tatum carried the scoring. Much needed contributions from Morris, Baynes, Larkin and of course Marcus Smart.
Jaylen is likely out for game one so it will take another strong effort by everyone.

The Sixers up next
Times for Baynes to bring some beef. Smart will be more settled. He made a great play with a steal, drive, pin on the guy chasing him and made a perfect alleyopp to Al on the break.
Brad has his work cut out. The Celtics limp into the next series with another depletion from the roster. Jaylen expects to play. We shall see.

Terry, whom I've continually maligned as a PG, is one helluva player. I still want to trade him, but for some serious inside presence.
Al is an All Star, period. Jayson is a gem, and Jalen, despite a poor first half offensively, played great D on Khris in the first half.
Brad's best coaching move recently? Putting Semi on the Greek Freak. Ojeleye really earned his paycheck this season. We had two rookies starting and still beat the Bucks. How amazing is that?
So much to be proud of in this team. Now let's see how they'll figure out a way to win minus Gordon, Kyrie, Jaylen, and Theis.

Riddle me this : What happened to the Greek Freak ? ANSWER: The Dominican Gator ate him. Everybody who took the floor tonight contributed, including the much maligned, and /or acquired taste, Marcus Morris , and a guy I tend to underrate, Baynes. I am,finally completely sold on Smart , at this point, because whenever he takes the floor, good things happen for the Celtics. In this day of advanced statistics , I think certain aspects of sporting competitions are not measurable. Which of us thought Shane Larkin would be a major contributor? We just won a playoff series starting two rookies, a second year man , a third year man and Al Horford, with Irving, Hayward and Theiss standing in the wings. This could be the rare occasion where injuries really do turn into positives. Our bench killed them . Four of their guys scored 76 of their 96. I`ll leave the expert analysis to you guys. Just blowing off steam here. I think we are in trouble against the red hot Fixers ( not a typo), if Brown is unavailable to guard Simmons but who knows, Smart and Semi seem like they can guard damn near anybody. Next man up. This is a lion-hearted team. As far as I`m concerned, it`s all gravy from here on out. Next year, watch out NBA. i`ll shut up now.

Rozier talked, after the game , about studying film , in the off season , to improve his floor vision and instincts (I`m using my words , not his, but that`s what I got out of his post-game interview) . Evidently, he`s putting in the work. I,like you, have questioned his point guard bona fides in the past, but no complaints about his work in this series. I don`t know the exact assist to turnover stats , but they were pretty damn good. I see no reason whatsoever to trade him. Adding the three point shot to his arsenal makes him a pretty special all around player when you factor in his D and rebounding. It`s a guard oriented league these days. Not trying to be argumentative , but I am curious as to why you would trade him , and what you would be looking for in return, worcester. Maybe you have discussed this in the past and I missed it. If so , mea culpa.worcester wrote:Terry, whom I've continually maligned as a PG, is one helluva player. I still want to trade him, but for some serious inside presence.

on Semi, he’s like 6’7” and was our best defender on Giannis easily, better than anyone would have thought before the series. Gives hope that the 6’6” PF’s from the 70’s like Gus Johnson and Dave Debusshere could have competed with some of these taller 4’s of today or recent history, especially if they had all of today’s training, etc. Semi is a strong and determined dude already as a rookie, he can take those hits and keep pressing, willing his force on you. Geez this team is gonna have so much talent coming back. If Theis doesn’t get hurt, Semi probably gets as much playing time as Yabu and we would have never known how good/great a defender he really is and we’ll have both of them next year at the 4.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "Giannis Antetokounmpo, who carried the Bucks all season long, was stifled throughout the night and limited by foul trouble, finishing with 22 points on 7 of 17 shooting but also committed four turnovers. He was hounded by Celtics rookie Semi Ojeleye, who moved into the starting lineup in Game 5 and made things tough on Antetokounmpo, especially in Boston."

there was an article a while back about Danny not being able to keep both Smart and Rozier when they are due for new contracts. It led to a couple of threads about which would you trade and for who. Since Rozier is still under his rookie contract another year, he was the easiest to trade (and at the time the less valuable) .
Packaging Rozier for a young big man or more likely to move way up in the draft for one of a young big were the main topics as I recall.

JR, KDP pretty much summarized my thoughts about keeping Terry. It's a salary cap #$$ issue. If we could keep both Smart and Terry for less than $28 M total then sure, but I don't see Terry settling for less than $20M per year. He will get that and more in today's NBA.
If he were a better passer, and he may develop that prowess over the summer, than he will be worth more than $20 per year. I really liked him as a #16 pick. I like him more now that he has produced so well, even though he doesn't pass to Jaylen enough, but he sure is a MONEY player, just like Marcus - and now Semi too.
What a team!!!!!!!!!

How about keeping Rozier and Smart and trading Irving?
Then you can go after a top level free agent.

Rozier comes cheap and so we can spend money on a center either trough free agency or trading in areas that we are deficient...........like a dominate center!
You give Irving a max deal...........there is no money left. Besides Hortford will be coming off his max deal and will command less in another contract. Being on a winner and seeing a dominate center come in will entice him to stay for less money.

Thanks for filling me in on prior discussions, guys. I guess my feeling is that they should try to keep both Smart and Rozier if they can, but I am far from a cap expert. Let`s see how things develop. For now , I am just basking until Tuesday.

Re: POST GAME MIL BUCKS - ROUND 1 - GAME #7 - HOME
I remember reading earlier this season (or last season) that Giannis Antetokounmpo (GF) didn't like it when Marcus Smart covered him because he was short and got into his legs. That threw the GF off his game. When Semi was defending the GF, Semi bent both knees and kept his arms out in plain sight, as others here mentioned. That kept Semi lower, rather than just trying to match the GF height for height.
Semi has earned playing time moving into the next round. His shooting woes will diminish over time, hopefully. He was a scorer in college, he just needs to have the game slow down a bit in his mind. Playing time this year in the playoffs will pay off big time in the future.
Barkley's diet includes many helpings of crow. He said, "Milwaukee needs to do this, Milwaukee needs to do that, yak, yak, yak." He is totally blind when it comes to his thoughts and acknowledgment of the Celtics. I hope he learned something over the past couple of weeks.

jr,
I'd like to keep both. That gives us great depth. It is a long regular season. Minimizing the minutes played by our starters helps to keep them fresh and available for the playoffs. Having backups that are confident enough to occasionally start and produce is an advantage that few teams have. Golden State had it, now is our time.
I will let team management and the owners worry about salary cap issues, luxury tax and the like. You have to spend to win and our team is ready to compete now. [edit: now meaning next season and beyond].

Re: POST GAME MIL BUCKS - ROUND 1 - GAME #7 - HOME
This season is going exactly as expected. The Celtics have just moved into the second round of the playoffs. Some doubted this teams ability to move forward. We started the season with the expectation that this team would go deep in the playoffs. But the injuries gave many pause. We are now going deeper into the playoffs.
This team is proving to be exactly who I thot they were. I said TRo was a shoot first pg and that that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. It wasn't. His elevated play has helped moved this team forward. But it will not translate into a new contract this season. He has one more to go on his rookie deal and as usual, Danny will wait. But Terry has vastly improved his stock in the NBA and that new contract will eventually be signed.
Marcus is who he is. He only shot 28% and missed all of his threes. But Smart is a difference maker. He made a difference by pulling back on his shot attempts and finding other people. He made a difference, as he usually does, by playing stellar D.
Big Al Horford is an all star. This was his game, his time to shine. And he shown brilliantly. Al doesn't look to dominate but when he does, he does!
Many of us were looking to see a better series by Brad. We were disappointed that he wasn't in better command of the team. That he was making mistakes that were glaringly obvious. But the play of the series was inserting Semi into the starting lineup to guard the Freak. That was the difference maker in this series. Brad has been fabulous. He really does deserve COY. I'm very happy that he finally got a glimpse of this forum so he could learn from us what he needed to do. We the man +1 (Never ignore Rosalie, our secret weapon).
Hey Philly, one of the problems of being the hot team and getting your series over with early is that you sit and wait for your next opponent and your fire begins to fade. The process is about to suffer a fatal hiccup.
I'm loving the energy that Kyrie and Daniel are bringing to the bench.

Re: POST GAME MIL BUCKS - ROUND 1 - GAME #7 - HOME
I am not the least bit interested in trading Irving. I love what Rozier did, but for 82 games, there is no way he carries this team. On top of it all, he has a way of disappearing during games, starting slow, and that is a part of the reason we find them behind so much early and playing catch up. He is not the answer for this team permanently. I love the kid, but I would never trade Kyrie and let him take over. Big mistake.
Why would you not want a team as compiled now? N et year is going to be a terrific year for Celtic fans. Rozier is still under contract for next year. We can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Re: POST GAME MIL BUCKS - ROUND 1 - GAME #7 - HOME
I'm giving the game ball to Horford. After Jaylen went down Al came out of halftime very aggressively and attacked, attacked, attacked. He was the primary reason why our lead ballooned from 8 at halftime to 14 after 3.
I'm giving the series ball to Semi Ojelaye. I can't remember ever seeing someone play defense against Giannis as effectively as Semi did game after game after game. Fantastic coaching decision to move him into the starting lineup by Brad. Giannis averaged 57% from the field for the series, he was 7-17 (41%) last night. Everybody knows that once The Freak gets into, or close to, the restricted area you're dead meat. 9 of his 17 fgas were in/just outside the restricted area and he was 4-9. I will take that anytime.

Al Horford on Semi Ojeleye: "Semi is probably the guy that we need to be talking about, because defensively, we're not able to do all the things we were able to do without Semi. I felt like he changed the series for us."
Middleton is a cold-blooded assassin. I've always liked him but after this series I love him. Glad we don't have to see him around for another 7 months or so.
Terry Rozier broke their backs in the 4th quarter. Every time the Bucks thought they could make a rally and close it up in the 4th Rozier hit big 3s or stole the ball from Bledsoe. Bledsoe had the best game of the series for him but Scary Terry still outplayed him. Bledsoe had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 4 TOs (and one technical) to go with his 9-12 23 points. Rozier had 6 rebounds (2 offensive), 9 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and only 2 TOs to go with his 10-16 26 points. 5-8 from 3.
The crowd noise here is LOUD!!!
Not loving Morris right now, sorry. He didn't do much good this series. The good news is that the last series has nothing to do with the next series and he'll be playing in front of his hometown crowd and his family now.

Morris never played in a Game 7: "My first one, it was probably the best game I ever played in, as far as fans and the way we competed out there. The younger guys stepped up, Semi coming in and not ever starting and defending one of the best players in the league. It was big time
It was Semi's first game 7 too, and he outplayed you. Let's hope he has gotten past this and makes it rain on Philly.
47 rebounds vs 32 rebounds. We know that we do well when we outrebound our opponents but how often do you see the other team losing the battle by 15 rebounds? 32 rebounds? In a Game 7?! That's really weak. Baynes with 5 offensive rebounds in 15 minutes. That's a solid contribution by Baynesy.
Energizer Shane Larkin now has to do it again vs McConnell.
Tatum's development is both astonishing and welcome. 20 points in a game 7 is nice but what I really like was his fearlessness and steadiness. He was 5-5 from the line. Missing fritos seems to be contagious, and we were missing a lot of them, but Tatum just focused on his fritos and hit them all. Pressure? What pressure? I also like that he had 5 assists. Not even 2 months into his 20th year and he is a significant contributor to a game 7 victory. The Beginning of the Legend of Jayson Tatum?
I watched the game with a friend at his house (the GSW-NOP game was on afterwards so we took turns busting each other's chops). He used to tell me that Jaylen Brown was a reach as a #3 pick while I predicted that he was going to be a multiple All-Star. He likes Tatum, as do I. Now he's saying that we should trade for Kawhi (his view is that a dominating top 3 player in the hand is worth a possible all-star in the bush) and that we should package Tatum for him and not Jaylen. That's the impact Jaylen Brown has had on my friend. He is almost untradeable to him now. Jaylen was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring pull. He is getting an MRI today. A grade 1 hamstring pull needs a couple of days to a week to heal. Jaylen may (may!) not play on Tuesday, if that's the case. They said he could have come back yesterday but that was a win-or-go-home game 7. Tuesday's game is not. Then again...

Jaylen Brown said he has personal reasons for why he never takes pills. "I probably haven't taken a pill in over 10 years." He's taking anti-inflammatory medicine for the hamstring. "Whatever it takes. Because I wouldn't miss this next series for the world."
Total number of Bucks fast break points in game 7 was 0. Zero. None. Bupkiss. Total number of Bucks fast break points in game 6? 25. Incredible, truly incredible. Take a second and wrap your mind around this. A team that thrives by having the Greek Freak going downhill with the ball in the open court was completely, totally throttled in that for 48 minutes, with Giannis playing 42 of them.

Looking for a number that illustrates the absurdity of what the Celtics just accomplished? Boston was winless this year (0-eight) when giving up 50% from the floor. Milwaukee shot 50% for the SERIES...and the Celtics beat them four times.

Good news: Charles Barkley, who picked Milwaukee to win this series, is picking Philly to win the next one. Our odds of making it to the EC Finals just improved.

Re: POST GAME MIL BUCKS - ROUND 1 - GAME #7 - HOME
Great post Bob. Some great points, but I will disagree with you on one point. Al Horford came to play from the opening tip off. His first half help set the tone, when he went off the floor, they caught up. His overall game was wonderful. Second half, he knew what he needed to do and did it, but, remember he shot 13 of 17. That was one hell of a performance.
I totally agree on Semi. Who gave him a shot at having an impact in the playoffs? Brad, that is who. He made Giannis feel his every move. And though it may not show in the box score, Shane Lakin came in and played some excellent minutes once he got the jitters out.
This was one terrific game to watch if you were a Celtic's fan. I have sat thru game 7's before in the Garden, the crowd is like the sixth man for the team. How could they ever have lost?
I am giddy thinking about the future of this team. I hope and pray Danny keeps the young guys and Al for as long as he is contributing, signs Kyrie, and watch Gordon return to the form we know he can hit. The rest is up to DA, even though we have grown attached to certain bench players, it may be that some are gone with newer, more talented ones. Time will tell about that.
Wow, with all these injuries, we are going into the second round of the playoffs. This will be a tough test for these young players. I will not even venture to guess what the outcome will be, but I know what I will be rooting for.
